As any Indians fan can tell you, the team has seen its share of injuries, especially in the later part of the season. One of those injuries was starting pitcher Danny Salazar. The Akron RubberDucks and the Cleveland Indians have signed up for another four years.
The teams announced an extension of the player development contract that will now run through the 2020 season.
-------
(Akron RubberDucks, news release) The Cleveland Indians announced today a four-year player development contract extension with the Double-A Akron RubberDucks of the Eastern League through the 2020 season.
"(RubberDucks owner/CEO) Ken Babby and his team have gone over the top in making Akron a top-of-the-line facility for our players, our staff, and the tremendous fans who come to see them play," said Carter Hawkins, Cleveland Indians Director of Player Development. "It has truly been a partnership, so extending our relationship with the RubberDucks was an easy decision. We couldn't be more excited to continue the relationship with the team and the city of Akron, and look forward to many years of championship-caliber baseball at Canal Park."
Since moving to Northeast Ohio in 1989 as the Canton-Akron Indians, the RubberDucks franchise has been the Indians' Double-A affiliate. The franchise moved to Akron when Canal Park opened in 1997 and became the Akron Aeros before becoming the Akron RubberDucks in October 2013. The franchise has won the Eastern League title four times: 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2012. Currently, 24 of the players on the Indians 40-man roster played in Akron, and 17 of those within the last four seasons, including Francisco Lindor, Tyler Naquin, Danny Salazar, Jose Ramirez and Mike Clevinger.
"We are thrilled to continue our working partnership with the Cleveland Indians," said RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander. "The Indians are a first-class organization with a deep, emotional connection with the people of Northeast Ohio. We can't wait to watch the next wave of Indians superstars to come through Canal Park during the next four seasons."
The 2016 regular season wraps-up Labor Day Weekend with a four-game series vs. Bowie Baysox, Sept. 2-5. The fun starts on a jam-packed Friday with Main St. Festival from 5-7 p.m. in front of Canal Park. It continues at 6:05 p.m. with the resumption of the Aug. 21 suspended game at Bowie. The game is in the top of the fifth inning with Akron leading 6-3. After that game finishes, a seven-inning game between the Baysox and RubberDucks will start. All of that is capped off with 1990s-themed fireworks, presented by Bober Markey Fedorovich and APV Engineered Coatings.
Tickets are available at the Canal Park Box Office, which is open Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., or by calling 330-253-5153 or by visiting www.akronrubberducks.com.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2016 season is its 20th since moving to Akron and third since becoming the RubberDucks. After the Indians' tough loss last night in Oakland, Sammy B and Jordan Bastian, Tribe reporter for MLB.com spoke Wednesday.
Jordan spoke with us to talk about what's been going on with starting pitcher Danny Salazar, as well as what the Tribe has to do in order to defeat the A's this afternoon.
Despite the loss last night, the Indians are still leading Detroit the AL Central. The Tribe will wrap up their series with Oakland today before going to Arlington to take on the Texas Rangers.
The Indians are ready to face the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field tonight to start a three-game series.
Ryan Lewis, Indians beat writer for the Akron Beacon Journal joined Brad Russell from Booth 4 at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario just ahead of tonight's game.
Tonight's pitching matchup will feature the Tribe's Corey Kluber going up against Jose Quintana of the White Sox. Lewis anticipates both of these pitchers making it tough on opposing hitters.

The Cleveland Indians are looking to make a postseason push, and the key to any successful baseball organization is a solid farm system that develops prospects in hopes of them making an impact with the big league club.
Carter Hawkins, Cleveland Indians Director of Player Development joined myself and Brad Russell live from Progressive Field Tuesday to talk about the Indians prospects coming up as well as the day-to-day operations of the player development staff.
"It's been busy from a logistical standpoint, just making sure our rosters are filled at the minor league level, but it's been worth it, we've been doing well with our player development making sure our guys are prepared and ready to help out at the major league level."
As the Indians continue to make that postseason push, they will be without Abraham Almonte for the postseason, so they are going to have to look within their development system to fill that gap.

The Indians are preparing to face the Los Angeles Angels, and during the "dog days of summer" the Tribe knows to make the most of their opportunity to keep their division lead and make a postseason push.
Tribe catcher Chris Giminez joined the Sam Bourquin Show on a "Feel Good Friday" to talk about his role behind the plate and how the Indians have to display the mental fortitude to get past their little mini-slump and push forward.
"We have an extremely loose clubhouse, we're able to shake off that streak we just had, and that's something I think is never going to go away."
He says that the starting rotation for the Indians is the best he's been around during his career, and they have the potential to dominate every fifth day.
The Indians and the Angels will play at 7:10pm on 1590 WAKR.

One of the main stories going around in the baseball world is catcher Francisco Mejia's 48-game hit streak and his manager has a front row seat to a piece of history.
Mark Budzinski, the manager of the Lynchburg Hillcats joined the Sam Bourquin Show to talk about Francisco's approach as well as the kind of young man he is.
"He's a great young man," Budzinski said. "It's been fun to watch him compete, and he's got a gift of putting the meat of the bat on the ball."
The 20 year old Mejia was one of the Indians' most talked about prospects when he was drafted a couple of years ago, and Buzinski says not only he, but the rest of the Hillcats ballclub prides themselves on coming to the park each day looking to improve and work hard.

The Cleveland Indians are prepared for a short series against the Washington Nationals before they begin an 11-game homestand at Progressive Field starting with the Angels Thursday.
Al Pawlowski from Sports Time Ohio and Indians Live host joined the Sam Bourquin Show to talk about the Tribe as they head down this stretch in August.
He says manager Terry Francona deserves a lot of credit for handling his starters and bullpen amongst other things.
"The other thing he does extremely well is how he deals with young players," Pawlowski said. "Look at Tyler Naquin, and how he's developed this year."
Naquin is in contention for Rookie of the Year in 2016 after struggling with some injuries early on.

The Cleveland Indians have made a couple of moves in order to make a post season push and they almost acquired one of the game's better catchers in Jonathan Lucroy.
Paul Hoynes from the Cleveland Plain Dealer joined Brad Russell to talk about the deal for Andrew Miller to help bolster the bullpen.
Hoynes said the Miller deal was a great signing by the Tribe.
"This is a guy who can close, he can set up, this is the piece they were missing in the bullpen, and it's the perfect fit right now," he said.
Hoynes also touched on the Jonathan Lucroy deal-that-wasn't and why that didn't go through as planned. You can catch the rest of Paul's interview here, and you can catch the Tribe and Twins on 1590 WAKR.
