:19 - Tony is back from his three-day weekend in Eastern Pennsylvania. He took his fiancee to Philadelphia for some sightseeing and cheesesteaks, though their trip to the Backstreet Boys concert got postponed.

8:37 - White supremacist symbols seem to be increasing this day in age due to the influx of social media. Ray and Tony talked about what’s known as “trolling,” and how toxic online culture has crept into the mainstream.

14:48 - Bob DiBiasio from the Tribe joined the program, and he talked about the progression of Carlos Carrasco, regression of Corey Kluber, and if the Indians will put together an Old Timers’ Game anytime soon.

19:47 - Ray mentioned a list of the friendliest and unfriendliest states in the union. Friendliest was in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and the unfriendliest is the state with the Finger Lakes.

:19 - We finally caught up with Akron mayor Dan Horrigan, who stopped by the studio. Not only did he talk about the area acquiring the Amazon fulfillment center, but he discussed the process and if there will be a spillover effect, causing more businesses to stay in or flock to Akron.

11:26 - The city of Dayton has passed a measure for their town’s employees to abstain from tobacco use due to rising healthcare costs. Is this a good thing, or will this be a slippery slope?

17:50 - After a week where Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood was released to rave reviews, we’re back to the high-impact action films in Hobbs & Shaw. Our movie guy Scott Wynn touched on those films this week.

20:38 - And finally, to end the week on a fun note, Ray mentioned the top ten one-hit wonders of the 1980s. Not surprisingly, Tony guessed every one of the artists correctly.

Dr. David Beer, professor of political science at Malone University, broke down the debates with Ray, mainly on the ideological split, the attacks on Joe Biden, and the future of Tim Ryan.

7:40 - Speaking of Democrats, US Senator Sherrod Brown joined the show to talk infrastructure, the debates, and a little on the Indians’ trading of Trevor Bauer.

13:00 - Get ready to close your ears, it’s time for the most annoying songs of all time!

16:40 - And finally, master gardener Jeanne Poremski was on the run so she called in today. Topics with her discussed were more on the powdery mildew, growing cucumbers, finding mushrooms in the garden, and the health of our trees as we begin August.

Ray Horner Podcast - 7/31/2019

:19 - After the Indians’ 2-0 loss to the Houston Astros, they took care of a couple of needs in a big three-team trade. The Tribe sent Trevor Bauer to the Reds, and picked up a haul from both Cincinnati and San Diego in acquiring the bats of Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes. Ray and Tony touched on the deal, which, out of the three teams, benefits the Indians the most.

6:19 - Tuesday was Barberton mayor Bill Judge’s state of the city address, and he recapped what he mentioned with Ray the next morning. Those topics included the loss of B&W and the gain of the Amazon fulfillment center in the immediate area.

12:48 - Norton superintendent Dana Addis talked about We Roar Together, a new five-year plan for their school system.

17:53 - Ray and Tony talked a little more on the trade, and more on Bauer’s contract and antics.

Ray Horner Podcast - 7/29/2019

:19 - Ray is back from his vacation, though it wasn’t a vacation for Trevor Bauer and the Indians on Sunday. After imploding on the mound during the Indians’ 9-6 loss to Kansas City, a visibly upset Bauer launched a ball over the centerfield fence before leaving the mound. Ray and Tony discussed this topic in depth.

6:31 - A little more on the Bauer saga and how pitchers and athletes should conduct themselves.

13:20 - Our veterinarian Dr. Gary Riggs stopped by as always this Monday, and he touched on the wave of heartworm occurring in the Akron area due to the wet spring/early summer and influx of mosquitos. Dr. Riggs is also the veterinarian at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, and he shared some facts about sharks during Shark Week.

19:32 - Today is National Chicken Wing Day, and Ray mentioned a few facts on chicken wings, which were invented at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York in 1964.

:19 - As Ray Horner wraps up his vacation in South Carolina, Tony Mazur fills in once again. Tony pondered why local television did not work in Akron with WAKR/TV-23. This apparently set off a bat signal, and former WAKR/WAKC newsman Mark Williamson (now with Akron Public Schools) called into the program to discuss why Akron TV seemed doomed from the beginning.

8:01 - William Sanderson is a character actor who’s appeared in everything from Deadwood to The Rocketeer, to 1982’s Blade Runner. He may be best known for his comedic cameos as Larry from the sitcom Newhart. He talked about his career playing various roles, and he promoted his new book Yes, I’m That Guy: The Rough-And-Tumble Life of a Character Actor.

19:03 - Our movie guy and WQMX morning man Scott Wynn stopped by to talk about what’s happening at the theaters. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is out now, and the Mr. Rogers trailer with Tom Hanks has made waves.

:19 - An ongoing segment when Tony Mazur fills in for Ray is what folks are outraged by today. Yesterday, it was someone mad at Macy’s because they sold “body-shaming” plates. Today, a journalist is upset with Forever 21 for selling shorts that say “Fake News.” This segued into a segment on Berkeley, California coming up with gender-neutral words to be used around town.

9:10 - Could Al Franken be back in the clear? Are the Democrats and #MeToo movement forgiving of him? And why do people in positions of power think they can do whatever it is they please?

17:42 - Talk of $15 and even $20 an hour for minimum wage has been going on this week, and that led the panel to discuss what their first jobs were and what they were like.

It’s pretty obvious the Indians have had a favorable schedule of late, but are there too many division games per season? What can be done? 3:42 - This weekend is the All-American Soap Box Derby, and FirstEnergy has agreed to renew its sponsorship of the event. CEO Chuck Jones called in to talk about the partnership.

10:10 - President Trump has confirmed the United States shot down an Iranian drone. What will this lead to, if anything? The panel discussed the current matters, as well as going back a few years to the Iran Deal.

15:22 - The weather will be scorching hot this weekend, so why not cool off in a movie theater and watch a(nother) Disney reboot? Our movie guy Scott Wynn chats about The Lion King on its 25th anniversary, as well as the Top Gun: Maverick trailer.

17:51 - As mentioned above, it’s Soap Box Derby weekend, and Ray sat down off the air with Ron Reed, author of the new book A Look Back, which chronicles the days of the derby from 1946 to 1959.

While Tony watched and enjoyed it, he’s still on this diatribe about "juiced-up” baseballs hurting the regular season games. 5:34 - All eyes in the sports world these last few days have been on Northeast Ohio, and that continues tonight with the MLB All-Star Game. Bob DiBiasio from the Tribe gave us a preview of how busy he and his compadres at Progressive Field have been. 15:12 - Volunteers have been a huge part of any golf tournament at Firestone Country Club. Barb Dietrich has been a fixture there for sixty years, and she joined Ray to talk about her years at Firestone. 20:00 - We hear about box office blockbusters, but what about the worst box office bombs?

:20 - Guest host Tony Mazur filled in for Ray on July 4th, and he opened the show talking about how Americans lack gratitude when it comes to celebrating a day like this. He brought up the recent demonstrations and attacks in Portland by the group Antifa on journalist Andy Ngo.

13:26 - Tony, like many other impressionable young men in the second half of the twentieth century, grew up on Mad Magazine. It was announced Wednesday night that Mad will soon be no more, after 67 years. Tony salutes the magazine and the great, iconic artists who’ve drawn for the publication since basically the beginning.

:19 - Nike was ready to release a shoe with the original United States flag created by Betsy Ross, but their spokesman and former NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, intervened, saying the flag represents racism and slavery. Ray, Tony, and Jeanne discussed this “controversy,” or lack thereof, and how it could be a publicity stunt in having folks talk about Nike again.

10:32 - There aren’t many Fourth of July movies out there, but Jaws was ranked the number one film for the holiday. That prompted Ray to bring up some fun facts about the summer blockbuster, which is celebrating its 44th anniversary.

:17 - There is still plenty of rain in the forecast this week, and the hardest hit as of Tuesday morning has been the Barberton area, which collects water like a fishbowl. Barberton mayor Bill Judge rejoined to the show to provide an update on his town, from the flooding on Barber Road to the residential streets.

7:00 - WAKR’s Kris Drew has returned to not just the studios, but the United States after some mission work in Haiti. He talked to Ray about what he saw in the country and how he was able to help.

12:24 - Just a few weeks away from the MLB All-Star Game, and those around Progressive Field have been busy preparing. Tribe VP Bob DiBiasio joined the program to talk about a setback with Bradley Zimmer, the upcoming trade deadline, and the Midsummer Classic.

20:26 - Tony watched Francisco Lindor’s home run travel 406 feet, which off the bat looked like a double in the gap. Tony and Ray touched on the alarming home run rates in baseball, where a player such as Hunter Renfroe could hit 50 home runs this season.

:17 - A recent study looks pretty bleak for America, as Millennials are not having kids at the rate of previous generations, and it could affect the economy. The two Millennials in the studio, Tony and Steffany, are both childless and weighed in.

6:45 - Today is the final day of the year from Akron Public Schools students. From the I Promise school to all the new career academies, David James has been quite busy, but he spared a few minutes in studio with Ray to recap the school year that was.

19:22 - Robert Mueller spoke on Wednesday, and many on the political left wonder if that will lead congress to go forward with an impeachment proceeding for President Donald Trump. Dr. David Beer, professor of political science at Malone University, reviewed Mueller’s press conference and the possibility of impeachment, which he admits may help Trump in 2020.

:17 - The great Carol Burnett turns 86 today, and it got everything thinking about classic (and not-so-classic) variety shows from yesteryear.

5:55 - There is a lot of hoopla that goes into the NFL Draft, but it can be a boon for an economy such as Nashville. Ray and Tony reminisced over draft days in the past, and even promoted the picks happening on Saturday at Lock 3.

:17 - In Polish traditions, the day after Easter is known as Dyngus Day. And while it’s a relatively new holiday in America, it dates back hundreds of years in Poland. Tony is Polish and all about Dyngus Day, which is typically celebrated in certain Cleveland area neighborhoods.

5:17 - Perhaps the most polarizing topic with parents these days has been vaccinations, and because of this, measles has made an unfortunate comeback. Dr. Tim Brown from Cleveland Clinic-Akron General stopped by to talk about the measles outbreak and the information surrounding vaccines.

20:50 - Speaking of age limits and bans, Cuyahoga Falls could be the next city to raise the age of buying tobacco products to 21. Mayor Don Walters called in to talk about the initiative coming from the Summit County Health Department to raise the ages, not just for cigarettes but for vaping.

Today is Indians Radio Week Day 2, and Ray Horner is rubbing elbows with everyone at the Cleveland Indians spring training facility in Goodyear, Arizona. On day two, Ray sat down with several members of the Tribe, both players and staff.

:30 - Manager Terry Francona spoke about managing without his father, dealing with the Michael Jordan baseball circus in Birmingham, and his favorite Pittsburgh Pirates players from back in the day.

6:54 - Team president Chris Antonetti touched on the crazy offseason, both on the Indians’ front and in Major League Baseball overall.

13:19 - General manager Mike Chernoff mentioned how analytics and the eye test go into judging personnel.

:17 - Today is Presidents Day, and Ray and Tony brought up some factoids about presidents from years gone by, as well as their most and least favorites. 7:59 - It was announced Friday than Akron Public Schools superintendent David James has been appointed to the Board of Trustees at the University of Akron. James mentioned how proud he is to have a solid working partnership between Akron Public Schools and the university.

18:30 - Also announced Friday is the contract extension for soccer coach Jared Embick at Akron. Embick spoke to Ray about his time so far with the Zips, and how he helped make them one of the best soccer programs in the country.

:17 - It’s been one year since the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Unfortunately, we’ve seen several school shootings since then, but this one in particular has stood out in recent memory. SACS Consulting & Investigative Services president and CEO Tim Dimoff was actually in Parkland recently, and he joined the show to discuss what has changed security-wise since then.

7:23 - Green mayor Gerard Neugebauer and fire chief Brian Lloyd stopped by the studio to touch on Green’s new community paramedic program for seniors.

14:12 - It sounds like an agreement to keep funding the government will happen, even if both parties are not excited about what is in the bill. Dr. David Beer talked about the extension of government and the money towards building more wall on the border.

18:59 - As this podcast was uploading, it’s snowing outside. But that doesn’t mean we can’t talk RubberDucks baseball. Ducks’ GM Jim Pfander promoted the tickets being on sale, and even mentioned some of the promotions for the season. The RubberDucks also have a new orange jersey, which was first unveiled two weeks ago at the Corbin Bernsen hot stove dinner.

:17 - Late Tuesday morning, a rumor floated around the Akron area about Don Plusquellic throwing his hat in the ring for mayor. If you recall, Plusquellic was mayor of Akron from 1987 till May 2015. If the reports are true, would be be a real threat to current mayor Dan Horrigan?

10:19 - Today is the coldest day of the year (so far), with the high in negative digits. While schools and some offices in the area are closed, there is still some black ice on the roads, so Kevin Thomas from Akron AAA stopped by to give some travel tips for the icy conditions.

:17 - Today’s Bride will be at the John S. Knight Center in Akron this weekend for a bridal show. Producer Tony is in the early stages of planning a wedding, and while he and his fiancee Leah are still looking for venues, it certainly won’t be a destination wedding.

8:20 - Former NFL player and local high school coach Jay Brophy came on the show to talk about a few football items. First, Ray and Jay talked about the hiring of Freddie Kitchens, then they mentioned the Rooney Rule and lack of minority coaches, and finally on this weekend’s games.

25:29 - Speaking of this weekend, Saturday is the annual TribeFest, held at the Cleveland Convention Center. Indians director of communications Curtis Danburg joined the program to preview the event.

:17 - January 2nd, 2019 was a brutal day if you were a celebrity born in 1942. “Mean Gene” Okerlund, Bob “Super Dave” Einstein, and Daryl “The Captain” Dragon all passed away on Wednesday, and all had huge careers in the 1970s and ‘80s. Ray and Tony chatted about their lives and brought up some fun facts.

6:32 - It’s day two of Ray’s meetings with the local mayors. Today, Barberton mayor Bill Judge called into the show to recap 2018 and look ahead to 2019, specifically how the Magic City can rebound after losing their largest employer.

16:36 - While it seems like people never eat at home anymore, the numbers for chain restaurants have gone way down in 2018. Eaters seem to be abandoning the chains and the sports bars and heading toward the ethnic-themed restaurants.

28:50 - During our Question of the Day, which was about former Cleveland Browns quarterbacks who threw the most touchdowns, Ray and Tony got into yet another discussion about who the team should hire as head coach.

10:49 - We’re a year and a half from the 50th anniversary of the Kent State shootings, and the folks there want to preserve the memory. Dr. Mindy Farmer from Kent State talked about the Ohio History Connection award the school won in commemoration of the event.

15:31 - My, how things have changed in high school athletics. An offseason once meant an off season, but there are no off days in this world. Dr. Joe Congeni from Akron Children’s Hospital discussed the weight training schools are doing throughout the winter to prepare for sports like track, baseball, and even football.
