Goodyear Challenging You to be "Blimpworthy"

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 27, 2018 – The Goodyear Blimp doesn’t show up for just anybody. With more than 60 years of providing aerial coverage for the biggest college football contests, the Goodyear Blimp has signaled the magnitude of games and served as inspiration for fans and athletes alike.

In celebration of that college football legacy, Goodyear is introducing a new advertisement this weekend that will motivate consumers to “Be Blimpworthy.” The new ad tells the next chapter of “Blimpworthy,” which previously focused on the hard work, determination and grit the blimp has witnessed.

Shifting the perspective from the blimp to those on the playing field, in the stands and watching at home, the ad challenges individuals to embody those “Blimpworthy” principles to achieve a personal or professional goal.

“’Be Blimpworthy’ is rooted in the idea that the blimp only shows up for the most marquee matchups, a level only reached by hard work and perseverance,” said Todd Macsuga, general manager of brand marketing at Goodyear.

“Be Blimpworthy” highlights the story of a young man focused on playing in front of tens of thousands of fans at a big-time college football venue as the blimp floats above. But instead of celebrating his accomplishment, the ad is centered on the necessary hard work to achieve the outcome.

The :30 version of the ad will debut Saturday, Sept. 1, across games on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC. Goodyear’s roots in college football continue to grow with its iconic blimp aerial coverage, its title sponsorship of the Cotton Bowl Classic played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and its sponsorship of the College Football Playoff.

In a nod to the new campaign, Marty Smith and Ryan McGee will execute the first complete game streaming viewing option from inside the Goodyear Blimp during the Florida State Seminoles and Virginia Tech Hokies matchup on Sept. 3. Fans will be able to watch on ESPN3 via the ESPN App, while simultaneously viewing the airship’s aerial camera.

The blimp first provided aerial views of the 1955 Rose Bowl, revolutionizing the way fans experience sporting events. More than 60 year later, Goodyear’s airships have covered hundreds of the biggest matchups in college football history, offering their own unique perspective of the action on the ground.

Goodyear will employ all three of its newest fleet of blimps this year to provide aerial coverage of college football’s biggest matchup throughout the season.

The Goodyear Blimp Headed North of the Border

The Goodyear Blimp will represent Akron, and provide stunning live aerial coverage, during this year's Canada Day celebration in Ottowa.

This year marks the country's 150th Canada Day celebration, marking the country's birthday. The celebration is Saturday, July 1st, and will feature a parade, fireworks, and more, all covered by the Wingfoot Two.

It's the second trip to Canada for the Wingfoot Two; last year the blimp flew to Toronto to cover the World Cup of Hockey.

See more from Goodyear in the press release below:

(Goodyear) The Goodyear Blimp is returning to Canada this summer to take part in Canada Day celebrations in the nation’s capital on July 1. As the country celebrates its 150th birthday, the blimp will provide live aerial coverage of Ottawa’s festivities and fireworks, offering breathtaking views of the city below. The Goodyear Blimp is returning to Canada after two visits in 2016. The now-retired Spirit of Innovation blimp traveled from California to Abbotsford, B.C. in July, and Wingfoot Two, Goodyear’s newest and largest airship, spent two weeks in the Toronto area in September providing aerial coverage of the World Cup of Hockey.

“From the Olympic Games to World Series and Super Bowls, the Goodyear Blimps have a long tradition of being part of the most watched sports and entertainment events in North America and around the world,” said Paul Fitzhenry, Goodyear’s senior vice president and chief communications officer. “Canada 150 marks an important milestone in the country’s history and we are honored to be part of the celebration, working with our Canadian broadcast partners to deliver captivating aerial coverage to Canadians from coast to coast to coast.”

“Having the iconic Goodyear Blimp fly above Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation will add yet another notable moment to the year-long celebrations we are enjoying in 2017,” said Michael Crockatt, president and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “The views from the blimp on Canada Day—July 1—of the hundreds of thousands of revelers in our streets will be spectacular!”

Wingfoot Two will fly over Ottawa on July 1 and those who spot it are encouraged to share photos on social media using the hashtag #TrueNorthBlimp. As part of the visit, the airship will fly customers and media, as well as the two lucky winners of Goodyear’s recent blimp ride sweepstakes. The blimp will cross the border into Canada near Watertown, N.Y. and travel to Carp Airport, west of Ottawa, arriving on June 29. It will remain in the Ottawa area until July 2 when it returns to its base in Akron, Ohio.

Wingfoot Two is one of the largest and most technologically advanced airships in the world. Nearly the length of a football field and capable of flying more than 110 km/h, it builds on Goodyear’s legacy as the world’s leading builder and operator of airships. Wingfoot Two will spend the remainder of the summer in Akron before relocating to southern California where it will be permanently stationed to make room for the next blimp being built in Akron.

Two Chinese Men Fraud Against Goodyear

Two Chinese men will get over two years in prison for a $1.5 million fraud scheme against Akron-based Goodyear.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Northern Ohio and the FBI in Cleveland says the men - Xin Franco Fan and Ren Xu Yu - pleaded guilty in a scheme that bilked the China offices of a Goodyear subsidiary.

Fan and Yu set up shell companies and Goodyear bought natural rubber from those companies between 2013 and this year.

The men will be deported after serving 27 months each in prison.

------

(U.S. Attorney's Office Northern Ohio, news release) Two Chinese nationals were each sentenced to more than two years in prison for defrauding Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company out of $1.5 million, said U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon and Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Cleveland office.

Xin Franco Fan and Rex Xu Yu both pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and honest services wire fraud. Both were sentenced to 27 months in prison and ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution.

Fan and Yu will be deported upon their release.

Both men were employees of Goodyear Orient Company (Private) Limited, or GOCPL, a subsidiary of Goodyear, located in Singapore and with offices in China. GOCPL manages all of the natural rubber purchasing, delivery, financing and quality certifications for Goodyear's global operations. Goodyear, through GOCPL, spends approximately $1 billion annually to acquire natural rubber for its operations. Fan was Yu's manager, according to court documents.

Fan, Yu and others incorporated or caused to be incorporated overseas shell companies in which they held a financial interest. Fan, Yu and others caused Goodyear to purchase natural rubber from these shell companies. They also required Goodyear suppliers to use loading companies in which they had a financial interest. This took place between 2013 and 2016, according to court documents

"These two defendants deserve their prison sentences after stealing $1.5 million," Rendon said. "Goodyear is to be commended for promptly reaching out to law enforcement when they uncovered this scheme. Because of the company's quick action, these men were brought to justice."

"The FBI is responsible for protecting the public's interest in American companies by aggressively pursuing and bringing to justice those who unjustly profit from American ingenuity by stealing secrets," said Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, Northern District of Ohio.

As a condition of their employment, Fan and Yu were obligated to act in the best interests of Goodyear when purchasing natural rubber. In 2015, Goodyear received an anonymous tip that Fan and Yu were receiving kickback payments in connection with GOCPL's raw materials purchases. With the cooperation of Goodyear executives, an investigation into the matter led to Fan and Yu being arrested earlier this year and criminal charges being filed in federal court.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rebecca Lutzko, Henry F. DeBaggis and James Morford following an investigation by the FBI.

Savannah James To Christen New Blimp

Goodyear's second next-generation blimp will be christened next month by a well-known Akron name.

The company says Savannah James, wife of LeBron James, will christen "Wingfoot Two" at a ceremony October 21st at the blimp airdock in Suffield.

Goodyear says she's the latest prominent woman to christen a Goodyear airship...starting with Amelia Earhart in 1929.

Price says that she's known for her own philanthropic and charitable work.

And he says her ties to Akron also make her a prominent choice. "Wingfoot One" was christened by ABC's Robin Roberts, who also has Akron ties, in 2004.

"Wingfoot Two" will eventually be based in California.

A fire truck Goodyear doesn't need anymore will help the Akron Fire Department battle fires.

Goodyear has given a 2005 Freightliner truck, a foam engine/pumper, so Akron firefighters will be able to use it.

Akron fire spokesperson Lt. Sierjie Lash says it will replace a piece of aging equipment.

"Some of our trucks are in excess of 20 years plus," Lt. Lash tells WAKR.net, "and a lot of them have a lot of mechanical issues, and it's hard to find the parts to replace those and to get those trucks fixed up to good shape."

One possible use for the truck - to replace a foam truck that dates back to 1995.

Lt. Lash says the department learned Goodyear may no longer need some equipment, and that led to the donation.

The fire truck can put out 1250 gallons per minute. It weighs just over 31,000 pounds. The value of the donation is estimated at $200,000.

It'll keep the Goodyear decals and tires, and part of the donation is what Goodyear calls "a large quantity of foam".

Goodyear Meeting: Positioned For Success

Akron-based Goodyear says it is "positioned for future success".

Goodyear CEO/president Richard Kramer pointed to "record levels of performance" in 2015, at the company's annual shareholders meeting.

He says that growth shows that Goodyear is "clearly on the right path" - and says "positive momentum" is expected in 2016.

Kramer also pointed to high stock return - Goodyear ranked 30th among all S&P 500 companies in the three years that ended in December 2015.

Kramer said one reason for record 2015 performance is a focus on innovative products.

He says expected growth in 2016 and beyond means that Goodyear's "best years are still ahead".

------

(Goodyear, news release) The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company achieved its third consecutive year of record segment operating income in 2015 and is well-positioned for future success.

"I am very pleased to report that our company delivered record levels of performance in 2015 and I believe we are well positioned to grow profitably in the future," Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President Richard J. Kramer said at the company's annual shareholder meeting today. "I believe we're clearly on the right path, and we expect our positive momentum to continue in 2016."

"Not only have our results allowed us to continue to invest in our business for future growth, but they have allowed us to strengthen our balance sheet while at the same time returning capital to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases," he said. Kramer said this demonstrates the company's focus on creating shareholder value over the long term. Evidence of Goodyear's progress can be found in the company's stock price performance as measured by Total Shareholder Return. Goodyear ranked 30th among all S&P 500 companies over the three-year period that ended on December 31, 2015.

"Our strategy is founded on the development of innovative products – from the market-back – that enhance the value of the Goodyear brand and distinguish us from the competition," he said.

"We are confident in our 2016 plan, and remain committed to our strategy of pursuing profitable volume and share in segments where the Goodyear brand is a differentiator. We believe that the best years are still ahead of us," Kramer said.

During the annual meeting, shareholders re-elected 13 members of the company's Board of Directors to new one-year terms and voted to ratify the appointment of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as the company's independent registered public accounting firm for 2016. A shareholder proposal regarding proxy access was approved. In an advisory vote, shareholders approved the compensation of the company's named executive officers.
