It took a bit longer than the Zips would have liked, but Akron beat Western Michigan 14-13 on Sunday to improve to 3-0 in MAC play. The game was delayed from Saturday after rain flooded Western Michigan's stadium. The win leaves Akron just two wins away from bowl eligibility with six games to play.

Akron head coach Terry Bowden joined Jasen to talk about the game, the challenges involved with a postponed game, and this week's game against Toledo at the Glass Bowl.

 

Akron Police say formal assault charges have been filed against 19-year-old Brian Bell, a University of Akron student and football player. 

The charges stem from an incident at a party during last school year in May. A report filed by the victim, Jason Watkins, claims Bell sucker punched him and then hit him in face a few more times. Watkins went to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center and was treated for a cut on his nose and swelling above his left eye. 

Bell, who plays likebacker for the Zips, is from Valdosta, Georgia, and was originally offered a football scholarship to Florida State University. The university retracted the scholarship after Bell was investigated in the death of a high school classmate back that happened back in January of 2015. A grand jury was convened in that case and the student's death was ruled accidental. 

Bell is scheduled to make his first court appearance on September 30. 

George Thomas from the Akron Beacon Journal caught up with Sam Bourquin on 1590 WAKR Wednesday to talk about managing expecations and the season opener with VMI on September 3.

 

The Zips have wrapped up spring practice, and coming off their bowl win against Utah State, the Akron football team is looking to build off of last year's success.

George Thomas, who covers the Zips for the Akron Beacon Journal joined the Sam Bourquin Show to talk about the team's mindset and strengths after their strong spring.

Thomas said that the wide receivers looked strong, and it wasn't just Jerome Lane who stood out this spring.

"They looked very good," Thomas said. "I'm talking Austin Wolfe, I'm talking Michael Means, Jo Jo Natson, who stands about 5 foot 8, but if you give him daylight, he's gone." 

 There were some other bright spots including the defensive backfield and the offensive line, but one of the key takeaways was that incumbent starter Thomas Woodson must work on his accuracy in order for his playmakers to get the most out of their ability.

  The Blue squad squeaked by the White squad 20-17 last Saturday at Infocision Stadium-Summa Field to wrap up spring practice. 

 

The new Mid-American Conference football schedule for the upcoming season has one big change affecting both area MAC teams.

The 2016 schedule has the Wagon Wheel showdown between the University of Akron Zips and the Kent State Golden Flashes scheduled for October 1st at Kent State.

The 2015 "Wagon Wheel" battle was played the Friday after Thanksgiving, on so-called "Black Friday".

The Zips also have a non-conference game against Appalachian State on September 24th. The Golden Flashes play at Penn State and Alabama, both in addition to MAC conference games.

Both teams have later games listed on ESPN2, ESPNU and the CBS Sports Network.

(Mid-American Conference, news release) The Mid-American Conference announced the 2016 football schedule today. Highlighting the schedule will be 17 nationally televised games during late October and November slated for national television on ESPN2, ESPNU and CBS Sports Network as the conference race unfolds in both the East and West divisions. ESPN3, which is available in more than 99 million homes, will also stream a select number of games late in the season.

An updated release of the MAC 2016 football schedule will be released in June with kick times and a television schedule for the first three weeks of the regular season and midweek games during late October and November. All other game kick times and television will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled game.The regular season will conclude with the 20th Marathon MAC Football Championship game on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:00 pm ET at Ford Field in Detroit on ESPN2. This will mark the 13th Marathon MAC Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, Super Bowl XL, and the 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four. For the ninth year in a row, league schools will face a formidable non-conference slate of opponents from the following Football Bowl Subdivision conferences – ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC. In addition, the conference will also face opponents from the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mountain West Conference, Sun Belt Conference and Independent Army and BYU.

MAC programs will face eight non-conference foes that finished in the final AP Top 25 poll: Alabama (1), Ohio State (4), Iowa (9), Oklahoma State (20), Wisconsin (21), Tennessee (22), Northwestern (23) and Western Kentucky (24).

A total of seven non-conference games will feature a Big Ten opponent (Illinois; Indiana; Iowa; Northwestern; Ohio State; Penn State; Wisconsin). The MAC will face foes from the ACC (2—Boston College, Virginia), SEC (3—Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee), Big 12 (2—Kansas, Oklahoma State); and Independent Army and BYU.
The MAC will also face opponents from the American Athletic Conference (3— Cincinnati, Memphis, South Florida), Mountain West (6—Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State, UNLV, Wyoming (2)), Conference USA (5—Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky) and Sun Belt Conference (5—Arkansas State, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Texas State).

This season the MAC will host 10 games against FBS non-conference opponents.
