Three Top Golfers Commit To WGC-Bridgestone

The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is touting commitments of three top golfers for this year's tournament.

Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott and Russell Knox have committed to the 2016 WGC-Bridgestone, which takes place starting June 29th at Firestone South.

This year's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational takes place over a month earlier than usual, since golf will be a sport in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

(WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, news release) The World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational will once again feature one of the top fields in golf as Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott and Russell Knox have all committed to the 2015-16 PGA TOUR season's final World Golf Championships event at Firestone Country Club's South Course from June 29 – July 3.

Fowler qualified as a playing member of the 2015 U.S. Presidents Cup team, as well as his victories at the 2015 Deutsche Bank Championship and the 2016 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Fowler, ranked No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), will be making his seventh appearance at the Bridgestone Invitational, where he has amassed three top-10 finishes, including a tie for second in 2011.

Scott qualified for his 11th trip to Firestone Country Club after joining the International Presidents Cup team for a seventh time in 2015. The 13-time PGA TOUR winner made the 2011 Bridgestone Invitational his first World Golf Championships title after shooting 62 in the first round on his way to a four-stroke victory. He recently added a second World Golf Championships title with a come-from-behind performance at the 2016 Cadillac Championship - his second victory in consecutive weeks after winning The Honda Classic.

While veterans like Scott prepare to take on Firestone Country Club, other players will make the trip to Akron for the first time in 2016. Among them is Russell Knox, who won the 2015 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions for his first career PGA TOUR title. The win came in Knox's first appearance in a World Golf Championships event.

The Scotsman is currently No. 3 in the FedExCup standings thanks to his breakthrough victory and two runner-up finishes on the season. He trails only Scott and leader Jason Day in the season-long points race, and is well in the hunt for a FedExCup title.

Players will have additional opportunities to qualify for the Bridgestone Invitational through their position in the OWGR. Those players not already qualified that are inside the top 50 as of the two Mondays prior to tournament week – June 20 and 27 – will qualify. Players can also qualify by winning an official event from the Federation Tours that have a strength of field rating of 115 points or more.
