Delta Discontinues CAK Detroit Service

Non-stop service from CAK to Detroit is no more, as of Monday evening's final Delta Airlines departure.

The Canton Rep is reporting that Delta is now only serving Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport out of Akron-Canton.

Director of Marketing for CAK tells the paper that they will continue working with Delta, though, to "explore other opportunities."

AUDIO: CAK President on Airport Expansion

Akron-Canton Airport will get a new facelift. A $34 million facelift, to be precise.

Rick McQueen, the soon-to-be-outgoing president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport, joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to discuss the changes happening at the facility. McQueen says the plans are to expand and update the airport for the modern-day traveler, complete with charging stations for cell phones and new restaurants and other amenities.

McQueen, who will be retiring at the end of 2018, believes the upgrades will help meet the needs of today for the regional airport, which opened its first terminal in 1955 and expanded seven years later. The project looks to be done in late 2019 or into early 2020.

CAK Reporting 9% Decline in Passengers

The Akron-Canton Airport is reporting a 9% drop in passengers from 2016 to 2017.

According to the data, 1.27 million passengers flew in and/or out of CAK in 2017, compared to 1.4 million the year before. That is the lowest number of air travelers at the airport in more than a decade. In an interview with WAKR News, CAK President and CEO Rick McQueen primarily cited Southwest Airlines exit from the airport in 2017 as the reason for the sharp drop. The airline gradually reduced their services at CAK throughout 2017.

McQueen, who announced earlier this year that he would be retiring at the end of 2018, says they have had some victories during and then after the departure of Southwest, but it was a major hit, and it will take some time to recover completely.

Akron-Canton Airport Offers More Full-Experience Tours to Moms GREEN, Ohio – An excited group of local moms joined Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) during the first-of-its-kind full-experience airport tour focused on traveling with kids. The response was so positive that CAK will offer additional tours to the community to reach more families who might have concerns about flying with their little ones. The next group of CAK Mom’s Tours will be held at the airport on Tuesday, June 13, with two options available. The morning tour will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. and the afternoon tour, 5:30-7 p.m.

“We enjoyed seeing how well-received our first Mom’s Tour was in the community,” said Rick McQueen, President and CEO of Akron-Canton Airport. “And, we look forward to continuing to offer such a great opportunity and resource to parents and families to help prepare them and make their travel experience as enjoyable as possible.”

The CAK Moms Tour is designed to help alleviate anxiety parents have while traveling with little ones. CAK understands that the travel experience with kids can feel intimidating and the team wants to do everything possible to make the journey easy-breezy for each family that chooses CAK for their travel adventures.

During the tour, moms will park, ride the shuttle bus to the airport, walk through the airline check-in process with their little ones, pass through security screening with baby gear, and navigate through the airport to their gates. Representatives from Spirit Airlines and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will cover common questions, such as what baby gear travels free, what kid-friendly snack items can be taken through TSA, and more. CAK plans to host these tours twice a year, with room to grow based on demand. The two upcoming tours are open to the public, and moms can sign up online at http://www.akroncantonairport.com/flying-with-kids/tour-sign-up. Space is limited and participation will be confirmed on a first come, first served basis. Parents are encouraged to ask questions and share their family-friendly ideas with the airport.

A Flying with Children resource guide that includes helpful tips about traveling with kids, including airlinespecific requirements for carry-on items, strollers, car seats and ticket purchases, as well as an outline of TSA rules for child nutrition and screening procedures is available on akroncantonairport.com.

AUDIO: Southwest Pulls Out At CAK

In 2014, Southwest Airlines came on through Akron-Canton Airport with great fanfare, but it’s stay was a little more than a layover. Come June, Southwest will no longer be taking off at the airport.

Rick McQueen, president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport, joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to speak of the loss of the airline. McQueen said Southwest had already been cutting back its services in 2016, and was both shocked but not surprised by the announcement.

As Southwest slowly cut down on their services at the airport, CAK will see a sizable bump with Spirit Airlines, another low-cost airline with flights headed to warm-weather destinations in Florida and South Carolina.

Southwest Airlines Downsizing At CAK, Not Leaving

Southwest Airlines is going to be pulling back flights at Akron-Canton Airport.

The airline's cuts in mid-April include not only all Florida flights, but a new flight to Las Vegas that will start next month, and end just a few months later.

CAK senior VP Kristi Van Auken says they're disappointed with the cuts, but Southwest is not leaving Akron-Canton Airport entirely.

"They're going to be down to three trips a day to Atlanta," Van Auken tells WAKR.net, "but that does access more than 100 destinations in the Southwest network."

Van Auken says Southwest is looking closely at former AirTran cities.

But she says the other airlines at Akron-Canton are growing, and those flying to Florida have Allegiant Air as an option.

The Southwest flights being cancelled will still fly from CAK through April 12th.
