This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Samantha Huth, a senior golfer from Archbishop Hoban High School.

She says that her father got her interested in the game of golf at an early age and she carries that appreciation for the game to this day.

“My dad was a golfer and he's been around it his whole life, and when I was trying to figure out what sports work best for me, I started taking lessons at 9 and have been at it ever since," she said.

Huth says the family atmosphere at Hoban extends beyond the golf course for her.

"Since my freshman year at Hoban, it's honestly been amazing," she said. "The best part about it is just the fact that you can say hi to anyone here and be automatic friends." 

In 2019, she was named the captain of the girls golf team, lettered for the fourth year in a row, and was a second place medalist at the NCL Championship earning first team honors.

Her coach Ben Wehmann said that she is a great example for the girls on the golf team and an exemplary student athlete.

In my eight years coaching, Sam stands out among a select few as one of the most motivated individuals I have ever had," he said. "The other girls looked up to her and respected her not only as an excellent golfer but as a leader and a friend and her dedication to the sport was obvious as she was often found outside of team practice working on her game with her dad and teammates."

Away from the course, Huth is a student ambassador, a member of the National Honor Society, and a Peer Mentor.

In the community, she volunteers at Common Threads and also at Summit County Animal Control.

Upon graduation in the spring, she plans on attending Clarion University to study nursing.

Copley head coach Mark Dente spoke with Sam and Brad on a Feel Good Friday ahead of their matchup with the Archbishop Hoban Knights on Saturday.

Archbishop Hoban senior Nate Bauer spoke with Sam Bourquin on National Signing Day about his commitment to play college football at the University of Toledo.

"Everytime I went there, the coaching staff treated me great, and it was a good fit for me," Bauer said.'

The Archbishop Hoban Knights are now in rarified air as they captured a Division II State title over Cincinnati Winton Woods 42-14 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.

The win gives the Knights three titles in a row and their first in Division II. Their first two titles in this dominant run came in Division III.

Coach Tim Tyrrell's team opened up the game in a big way when quarterback Shane Hamm connected with Garrett Houser on a 73-yard pass play to make it 7-0.

Tyrrell said his freshman signal caller played well tonight.

"He was very smart in being able (to check at the line of scrimmage)," Tyrrell said.

"The offensive line did a great job in protection and the receivers made great plays on the ball."

Hoban also capitalized early on mistakes by the Warriors, opening up the first quarter scoring off a blocked punt to make it a 14-0 game.

They didn't take their foot off the gas as Houser, a Navy commit, got his 2nd TD of the ballgame to open the second quarter to put Hoban up 21-0.

A long run by Winton Woods' Miyan Williams led to a touchdown pass to Cornell Beachem from signal caller Kenny Mayberry to cut the lead to 21-7 with 9:19 left to play in the first half.

The Knights answered quickly with a long pass to Nate Bauer to set up a 1-touchdown plunge by junior Tyris Dickerson to make it 28-7.

Raquean Prince of Winton Woods then answered for the Warriors returning the subsequent kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead half 28-14.

Hoban then connected on a 38-yard scoring strike to Mason Tipton, who appeared to step out of bounds, but the TD stood.

Freshman QB Shane Hamm then hit end zone again with another touchdown pass to Tipton to make it a 42-14 halftime lead after a failed fake punt attempt by Winton Woods.

It was Hamm's fourth touchdown toss of the night.

Both teams had a scoreless third quarter, but Hoban kept up the defensive pressure, which was just what Coach Tyrrell wanted.

When asked which was the most memorable aspect of this three year run by the Knights, Tyrrell pointed to the seniors who led on the field, in the weight room, and with the underclassmen.

Executive Producer and Director of "The Akron Holy War"  Anthony Fanelli spoke with Sam and Brad Thursday to talk about the premiere of the documentary on the high school football rivalry between the Knights and the Fighting Irish on the gridiron.

Fanelli, a 2002 Hoban graduate played in the rivalry and is currently living in California.

The documentary's premiere will take place at the Akron Civic Theatre on Sunday, September 17 at 7pm.

The Archbishop Hoban football team will be taking on Trotwood-Madision in the Division III state championship this Saturday December 3.

The investigation into Archbishop Hoban High School's football program is over, and the Ohio High School Athletic Association has handed down its sanctions.

The post-season suspension of Hoban coach Tim Tyrrell for recruiting violations has been reduced to two seasons if Hoban advances in the playoffs.

The program will be on probation through June 2018, and will have a reduction in next summer's coaching days. New sanctions include a $5,000 fine and development of an educational program for Hoban coaches and staff.

The OHSAA says it's now confident that Hoban understands the violation and will work to correct issues.

It says Tyrrell was "cooperating and forthright" with the OHSAA.

(OHSAA news release) OHSAA Concludes Investigation into Akron Archbishop Hoban
Sanctions include probation, fine, summer coaching reduction and educational program for all staff, but reduction in postseason coaching suspension

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A recent meeting of Akron Archbishop Hoban administrators and the Ohio High School Athletic Association has resulted in the end of an investigation into the football program at Archbishop Hoban and an agreement on sanctions.

On Sept. 20, the OHSAA announced its initial findings and penalties, which included a postseason coaching suspension for head football coach Tim Tyrrell for a violation of OHSAA Bylaw 4-9-2 – Recruiting. That postseason suspension has now been reduced to a two-game postseason suspension, if Hoban advances in the playoffs. Other sanctions already announced include probation through June 2018 and a reduction of coaching days next summer. New sanctions include a $5,000 fine and development of an educational program for all Hoban coaches, administrators and admissions staff.

"We recently met again with officials from Archbishop Hoban in connection with their appeal and are confident they now understand the violation in question and will take measures to correct those issues," said Dave Gray, OHSAA interim commissioner. "Coach Tyrrell was cooperative and forthright in responding to our questions. We have made suggestions to Hoban administrators to ensure understanding and compliance in the future with all OHSAA bylaws, which is our ultimate goal."

"We were very pleased with Commissioner Gray's approach to resolving this appeal," said Dr. Todd Sweda, Archbishop Hoban President. "The focus was on education of the Bylaws and productive, corrective action. We look forward to spearheading a program to further educate our coaches, admissions personnel and those of surrounding schools."

The Archbishop Hoban football program is under investigation for alleged recruiting violations and the program is now on probation for the next two seasons.

The Archbishop Hoban football program and head coach Tim Tyrrell are under the microscope of the Ohio High School Athletic Association and with the rival STVM Fighting Irish coming up this Friday, the team is looking to eliminate distractions.

High School sports reporter Tim Rogers spoke with Sam Bourquin Tuesday to talk about the alleged recruiting violations and what the Knights are facing from the OHSAA.

The violation stems from Coach Tyrrell allegedly initiating contact with a student at St. Hilary during 2015.

The school is on probation for the rest of the 2016-17 school year and for the following school year.  Coach Tyrrell is also not allowed to coach the team if they make the playoffs this season. 

Federal League power Canton McKinley is looking to build off of last year's successful season and prepare to face a tough Archbishop Hoban team in Week 1 

Head Coach Dan Reardon joined the Brad Russell Show Tuesday to talk about what challenges the defending state champs bring to the football field. 

 "We have a big test, and we're excited about it," Reardon said. "We know we have to play our best ball game to have a chance to contain those guys."

The game will be played Friday at Canton Central Catholic's Lowell Klinefelter Field.  The Bulldogs will be returning 29 lettermen including some big-time talent including quarterback Dominique Robinson , linebacker Kadeem Trotter, and defensive back Reggie Corner.

There are 28 teams vying for an opportunity to play for a state championship in Columbus and among them are locals Hudson, Archbishop Hoban, Canton Central Catholic, Perry, Stow and Mogadore.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the fourth round playoff pairings and sites Sunday and the games are slated to be played Friday and Saturday.

The Stow Bulldogs (12-0) are one of five teams making their first final four appearance. They'll match up against St. Edward (12-1) in Parma on Saturday at 7:30 p.m..

Canton Central Catholic (9-3) is coming off of a 33-6 victory over Columbiana Crestview. Canton Central Catholic will compete against Milan Edison at Wooster Triway Jack Miller Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Hudson (11-2) is coming off their best season in school history with a 13-1 record. The Explorers will look to upend Perry (11-2), as they will face off in Solon at Stewart Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Mogadore (12-1) is no stranger to playoff football. The team is making its 17th final four appearance. The Wildcats will take on Danville Friday at Orrville's Red Rider Stadium at 7:30 p.m..

Hoban (12-1) won the Division VII regional title Friday, after they defeated St.Vincent St. Mary for the second time this season by a score of 24-21. Hoban will play Zanesville in the state semi-final at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2015 OHSAA football playoffs have now reached the fourth round, with 28 teams remaining for this weekend's state semifinals and the opportunity to play for a state championship. The fourth round also marks the regional finals for Division I, which has only two regions. Neutral sites were selected by the OHSAA on Sunday for the 14 games around the state this Friday and Saturday.

Playoff Format and Schedule
Unless otherwise noted, Divisions II, III, V and VII will play at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays during the playoffs, while Divisions I, IV and VI will play at 7 p.m. on Saturdays.

Ticket Information
Fans are encouraged to buy their playoff tickets in advance at the participating schools, which keep a percentage of the revenue. For state semifinal playoff games, tickets are $8 presale and $10 at the gate. All-session ticket books are currently on sale for the state championship games Dec. 3, 4 and 5 at http://go.osu.edu/OHSAAFB. All-session ticket books in the club level, which are the chair-back seats on the west side of the stadium, are $105 each (good for all seven games) and also permit indoor access in the Huntington Club before, during and after each game. All-session reserved ticket books on the east side of the stadium, which don't include indoor access, are $84 each. Single game tickets will go on sale November 29 and cost $10 at the state finalist schools, or at the gate before each game for $15 (club level) and $12 (reserved).

Looking Ahead to the State Championships
The state championships are Dec. 3, 4 and 5 in Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Of the four divisions that play their playoff games on Friday nights (II, III, V and VII), one will be selected to play its state championship game on Thurs., Dec. 3. The other three will play their state championship games on Fri., Dec. 4. Divisions I, IV and VI will play their state championship games on Sat., Dec. 5. Specific game times will be announced on the OHSAA's twitter account (www.Twitter.com/OHSAASports) the Friday and Saturday nights of the semifinals (around 10:45 PM).

Five Schools Make First "Final Four" Appearance
Five schools are making their first trip to the state semifinals, including Stow-Munroe Falls (Div. I), Perrysburg (Div. II), Milan Edison (Div. V), Grandview Heights (Div. VI) and Fort Recovery (Div. VII). Edison, in fact, hadn't won a playoff game prior to this season. Fort Recovery had only one playoff win prior to this year, while Stow, Perrysburg and Grandview Heights all had just two playoff wins.

Schools Build on Impressive History
Several schools this weekend are adding another "final four" appearance to an already impressive resume. Chief among them are Mogadore (Div. VII), which is making its 17th appearance, and Steubenville (Div. IV), which is making its 16th appearance. Other semifinal regulars include Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI) making its 14th overall (fifth in a row and nine of last 10 years) and Coldwater (Div. V) making its 13th overall (seventh in a row). Trotwood-Madison (Div. III) is back for the sixth year in a row and Kirtland (Div. VI) is back for the fifth year in a row. Also noteworthy is Middletown Bishop Fenwick, which made eight semifinal appearances in the first 16 years of the playoffs (1972-1987), and is now back for the first time since then.

Compare and Contrast: Divisions II and IV
When the OHSAA expanded the football playoffs to seven divisions in 2013 and made Division I smaller (largest 72 schools in the state), one of the resulting effects was that many schools that used to be "small" Div. I schools were now in Div. II. That fact is evidenced again this year as the Div. II state semifinalists are all making their first or second appearance in the "final four." Compare that to the semifinalists in Div. IV, which have combined to make 42 appearances.

Information on Neutral Sites
There are many factors that go into determining playoff sites, such as quality of field surface, seating capacity, quality of lighting, size of locker rooms and their distance from field, press box size, parking spaces available, and a separate locker room for officials. After all those factors are taken into consideration, it must be confirmed that the site is available and willing to host a playoff game on the date needed. Not all sites are available when requested by the OHSAA.
