Update: Jackson Teen Found Safe

Update: The Jackson Township Police Department posted an update to their Facebook page this morning saying that Thomas has been located and is home safe. 

No further details have been released.

The Jackson Township Police Department is asking for your help finding missing Thomas M. Barbee (pictured), who they say may have run away from home. 

Thomas, 14, was last seen in the area of Hills & Dales and Deer Trace Avenue Northwest. 

He is listed as about five feet, seven inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. 

Anyone with information is asked to please call the Jackson Township Police at 330.832.1553.

Man Steals Beer, Uses Motorized Getaway Cart

Jackson Township Police are looking for a man who loaded up a motorized shopping cart full of beer and then, very slowly, rode right out the front door without paying for it.

Surveillance cameras caught images of the man leaving the Acme Fresh Market on Whipple Avenue around 9 a.m. Wednesday. 

Police are asking the public's help identifying the man.

Caregiver Killed Outside North Canton Group Home

Jackson Township Police say they have arrested a man in connection to a homicide outside of a group home in North Canton. 

Sunday night, just about 10:15, police and EMS were called to 6807 Elaine Avenue Northwest for an assault in progress. 

When officers arrived they found the victim, later identified as 51-year-old Lisa Isom, stabbed to death. Word is that Isom was attacked while walking to her car that was parked on or near the property.

Initial reports indicated that police had a person of interest in custody. Monday afternoon it was confirmed that 23-year-old Jacob Andrew Beichler was arrested and cahrged with Aggravated Murder and Felonious Assault. 

The Jackson Police report states that Beichler's home address is the same as the group home, indicated he is a resident.

UPDATE: Jackson Student Has Died

Update: The Summit County Sheriff's Office is reporting that that the Jackson Memorial Middle School student who brought a rifle into the school and shot himself has died. 

According to the report, the 13-year-old student hid the gun underneath his clothing and brought it onto the school bus. When he arrived at the Jackson Memorial, he went into a bathroom and then shot himself. He was taken to Akron Children's Hospital where he died early Wednesday morning, just after 12:30 a.m. 

The Medical Examiner has released the student's identity, but our 1590 WAKR Newsroom has decided not to mention his name. 

Jackson Township Police Chief Mark Brink, during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, explained that the student get the rifle from his mother's house, but that they were still working on who it was registered to. Chief Brink added that the student was carrying a backpack that had bottle rockets, batteries, and "some ammo," but he did not specify how much. 

Chief Brink mentioned that the investigation is ongoing and that it would take a significant amount of time, saying that they are looking for a motive and the student's full plan for that day on campus.

Update: All Jackson Local Schools will remain closed for the remainder of the day Tuesday.

Students are being sent home and all extracurricular activities for Tuesday have been canceled. 

There is still no word on the condition of the student that was shot.

Jackson Local Schools are in lockdown protocol after a reported shooting on at Jackson Memorial Middle School. 

Reports are that a 7th grade student, who brought a gun to the middle school campus, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The student is being treated at an area hospital. 

Jackson Schools Superintendent Christopher DiLoreto sent an automated message to students and parents in the district notifying them of the shooting at the school and the lockdown, and posted the following to the district website: 

 

 

 

There has been no update on the status of the student who was shot.

UPDATE Missing Five Year Old Found Dead

The search turned to grisly discovery as the body of five year old Ashley Zhao was found inside the restaurant her parents owned, and now a mother and father are charged with murder. Police say Mingming Chen struck her daughter several times in the head; she's charged with murder. Ashley's father Liang Zhou found his daughter with fluid coming her her mouth. He washed it off and tried to revive her using CPR. He's charged with complicity to commit assault. Both were booked into the Stark County Jail.

A day of searching ended with the hearbreaking discovery of the body of five year old Ashley Zhao in her family's restaurant.
 
Zhao was reported missing Monday night when her mother reported the little girl was gone; police acted on information the child exited the family restaurant on Portage Street, NW in Jackson Township sometime prior to 9:00 that evening and had left in an unknown direction. While the case wasn't declared an AMBER Alert lacking any information she had been abducted, authorities used foot searches, drone cameras for an aerial view and searches of neighboring businesses throughout the day in an effort to find the little girl.
 
The search escalated into a statewide Missing Child Alert around lunchtime and included state and federal officials.
 
The Jackson Township police department issued a news release revealing the body was discovered in the restaurant and had been "concealed", but further details have not been released.

(Jackson Township Police Department) The Jackson Township Police Department was contacted on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 9:02 pm for a missing person report at 4924 Portage St, NW, Jackson Township. Upon arrival officers were informed of a five (5) year old female that was reported missing from the location by her parents.
 
Through their investigation it was determined that the child was found deceased and concealed inside the building. 
 
The Jackson Township Police Department with the assistance of the FBI and Ohio BCI in cooperation with the Stark County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the death.
 
We would like to thank Jackson Township Detective Bureau, Jackson Township Fire Department, Canal Fulton Police Department, Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio BCI, Canton SWAT Cooperative, US Marshall’s Task Force, Canton Police Department and Canal Fulton Fire Explorers for their assistance.

Jackson PD Seeks 5-Year Old

On this very inhospitable morning -- Jackson Township police are looking for a missing child who reportedly wandered away from her home. Five year old Ashley Zhao was last seen at a local business in the 49-hundred block of Portage Street NW. She's wearing a purple winter coat with gray leggings.

(North Canton PD) The Jackson Township Police Department is investigating the disappearance of a five (5) year old female. The child was last seen in the 4900 block of Portage Street, NW, Jackson Township. It is believed she wandered out a back door of a business with unknown direction of travel. The child's name is Ashley Zhao, 5 years old, approximately 4" tall, 35-40 lbs, black hair, and brown eyes. UPDATE Jackson Township police have their man now behind bars; Dimitrius Shawn Laury was considered armed and dangerous. wanted for a home invasion targeting an elderly woman and another break-in. Laury was taken into custody shortly after midnight, according to a release from the Jackson Township Police Department.

Laury was charged with attempted rape and aggravated burglary relating to the home invasion on Aramis Street NW. He's also wanted in connection with a breaking and entering last February on Oxford Street NW.

The Massillon man is being held in the Stark County Jail.

(Jackson Township PD) Jackson Township Police Department has taken into custody Dimitrius Shawn Laury. 

Mr. Laury was arrested at 2232 Winfield Way NE, Canton, OH, on May 28, 2016, at 0025 hours on the following charges:

Attempted Rape, F2 and Aggravated Burglary, F1

Mr. Laury was being sought in connection with the home invasion that occured on May 23, 2016 at 2:00 a.m. in the 7600 block of Aramis Street, NW, and assaulted an elderly female.

Police were able to identify him in the burglary that occured at that address. Police do believe he is also connected to the incident that occured in the 3600 block of Oxford St., NW.

Jackson Township Police would like to thank the Stark County Crime Lab and the Ohio Bureau of Investigation for their assistance in processing the evidence. Jackson Township Detective Bureau was also assisted by US Marshals, Stark County Sheriff's Deputies, and Canton Police Department in the arrest of Dimitrius Shawn Laury.

A Massillon man is being sought by police in those home invasions this week in Jackson Township.

Jackson Township police have a warrant for the arrest of Dimitrius Shawn Laury on charges of attempted rape and aggravated burglary.

Police say he's charged in connection with the home invasion early Monday at an Aramis Street house, where an elderly woman was attacked.

They also think Laury is connected to another break-in on Oxford Street NW.

Laury is from Massillon, though police say he's lived elsewhere in Stark County.

He's considered armed and dangerous.

Woman Arrested For Embezzlement Charges

A woman facing charges of embezzling over $300,000 has been arrested.

Jackson Township police say Jenny R. Harter Morales of East Canton was arrested Tuesday by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force after being indicted in Stark County Ccurt.

She faces felony counts of grand theft, aggravated theft, forgery and telecommunications fraud.

Jackson Township police say those charges came out of an investigation by their detective bureau, looking into the theft of $321,000 from Partners in Family Practice between 2012 and 2016.

(Jackson Township Police, news release) On May 24, 2016, Jenny R. Harter Morales of East Canton was arrested by the US Marshal's Fugitive Task Force on an indictment from the Stark County Court of Common Pleas. She was charged with the following:

1 count of Telecommunication Fraud, F2
1 count of Aggravated Theft, F3
3 counts of Forgery, F3
1 count of Grand Theft, F4

Charges were a result of an investigation from the Jackson Township Police Department's Detective Bureau. She is charged with embezzling approximately $312,000 between 2012 and 2016 from Partners in Family Practice.

Jackson Township Home Break-Ins

Jackson Township police are asking people to lock their windows and doors after two home break-ins reported in the past few days.

The first break-in happened late Saturday on Oxford Avenue Northwest . Police say someone entered the home, showed a knife, but fled when the home owner caught up with him.

Early Monday morning on Aramis Street Northwest, police say someone entered the home and assaulted an elderly woman.

(Jackson Township Police, news release) Jackson Township Police Department is investigating the unlawful entry of two (2) homes that were entered via unlocked door or by force that occurred over the weekend. The first incident occurred on May 21, 2016, at 11:50 pm in the 3600 block of Oxford Avenue, NW. The suspect entered the home, brandished a knife and fled when he was confronted by the home owner.

The second incident occurred on May 23, 2016, at 2:00 am, in the 7600 block of Aramis Street, NW. The suspect entered the home and assaulted an elderly female.

The suspect is described as a light skinned African American male, approximately 6 foot tall and 250 pounds.

As the investigation continues we are asking residents to lock windows and doors and be aware of their surroundings. Jackson Township Police are asking that you report any suspicious activity to the police department at 330-832-1553 or for immediate response please dial 911.
