Gun & Grenade Bust In Springfield

Springfield Township police found more than they bargained for during a traffic stop on Massillon Road.

Officers reported seeing a semi-automatic handgun within reach of the driver; it turned out to be a loaded .45 caliber weapon. Police also say they spotted what they thought was an active hand grenade in a rear side door and called the Summit County Bomb Squad.

It was determined the grenade wasn't active and no danger, but 20-year old Lane Spraggins faces felony charges and was booked into the Summit County Jail.

(Springfield PD) On 3/31/17 at approx. 12:21 AM, Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 2400 block area of Massillon Rd.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noticed a semi-automatic handgun in the back of the vehicle, within the drivers reach. Further investigation determined the firearm was a loaded .45 cal. semi-auto. Also located in the rear drivers side door was what appeared to the officers as an active hand grenade.

The Summit County Bomb Squad was called to the scene and determined the grenade to be inert and of no danger. The driver, 20 year old Lane Spraggins was charged with Improper Handling of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, a Felony of the 4th degree. Mr. Spraggins was booked into the Summit County Jail.
