North Canton PD Probes Two Dead

North Canton police are investigating what appears to be two dead in a home on Harmon Street -- what could be a murder-suicide. Police found a 49-year old man dead inside the house in the 500 block of Harmon Street SW and about an hour later another man, 18-years old, at a nearby park off Hillcrest Avenue SW from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

North Canton schools have closed the nearby middle school because of it but all other schools are open today.

The school district noted on it's Facebook page "The North Canton Middle School will be CLOSED TODAY (12/19/16) due to police activity and crime scene in the area. There are street closures in the area but there is no involvement concerning the middle school. All other buildings and programs in the district will be open today."

Officials were quick to say they don't believe the shootings had anything to do with the nearby middle school, which is closed strictly because of the investigation. Police were called to the home around 1:30 this morning after reports of gunshots heard by neighbors.

(North Canton PD) On Monday, December 19, 2016 at approximately 1:30 am the North Canton Police Department received a call from a resident in the 500 block of Harmon St. SW. Police and North Canton Fire Department medics responded to the residence for an unresponsive 49 year old male who was found to have suffered several gunshot wounds.

Police officers conducted an immediate search of the home and surrounding area for another person possibly involved with the incident in the residence. At approximately 2:50 am officers found a second person, an 18 year old male, outside a City park restroom in the 300 block of Hillcrest Ave. SW. That person appeared to have suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigator Rick Walters from Stark County Coroner Dr. Murthy’s Office and Crime Scene Investigators form the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCI&I) responded to assist with the investigation of the two crime scenes. North Canton City School Superintendent’s Office was contacted with the request to cancel only classes at the North Canton Middle School due to the proximity of the nearby crime scene and the amount of time it will take to keep the area secured from the public.

No names of the victims are being released at this time in order to make family notifications of the deaths.

North Canton Taps New Superintendent

North Canton City Schools have tapped a new superintendent.

The district says the hiring of Jeff Wendorf, the long time superintendent at Lake Local Schools, should be official tomorrow/Wednesday.

Wendorf has been superintendent of Lake Local Schools for eight years.

The North Canton district points to a number of awards in the Lake district and its schools over Wendorf's time as superintendent, and says he has "proven track record of effectiveness".

(North Canton City Schools, news release) On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, the North Canton City School Board of Education is expected to employ Jeff Wendorf as its next Superintendent.

Wendorf has been Superintendent of the Lake Local School District for the past eight years. Prior to that, he had fourteen years of administrative experience, serving as a High School Principal, Assistant High School Principal and Director of Special Services at Lake Local, Louisville City and Marlington Local Schools. Wendorf was also an Instructor at Mount Union College for seven years where he was an assistant football coach and head baseball coach for three of those years.

Wendorf has a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Capital University and a Masters from West Virginia University. He is a Baldridge Examiner and has been trained in Ohio's Partnership for Excellence.

During his tenure as Superintendent of Lake Local, the district has been rated "Excellent with Distinction." Lake Elementary was awarded the "Blue Ribbon School of Distinction" by the Federal Government and the district academically ranks as one of the top school districts in the state.

Lake High School was named one of the top performing high schools in the nation by Newsweek in 2015. The district was also awarded House Bill 264 State and National Awards for Efficiency and Performance. Lake Local students have a top state ranking in the amount of college credits earned while students are still in high school.

Under Wendorf's leadership, Lake Local recently passed a Bond Issue for a $90M facilities project with Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC), a permanent improvement levy and was also successful at securing operating funds for Lake.

Wendorf is married to Judie and they have two children, Jarrod and Janelle.

"I deeply appreciate the support of the board, staff, students and community of the Lake Local School District. Lake has an exciting future," said Wendorf. "In my professional career, I feel it is time to accept a new challenge and I look forward to serving the North Canton Schools and community."

North Canton City School Board President Bruce Hunt released this statement:

"Over the past 6 weeks, the North Canton Board of Education has compiled feedback from our administrators, staff and community pertaining to what qualities they most valued for our next educational leader. Taking that feedback and comparing it with our own expectations, a clear profile emerged to help guide our selection. We were seeking an excellent communicator with strong people skills and someone who had both teaching and building-level administrative experience. Additionally, our candidate needed to possess the ability to cast a clear vision for our district and have practical experience in collaboratively building teams in order to accomplish those goals. Mr. Wendorf brings all of these to the North Canton Superintendent position. He has a proven track record of effectiveness, and without question, Lake is one of the county's premier school districts. His leadership there did not go unnoticed, and although he was not an official candidate, the North Canton Board of Education requested that the Stark County Educational Service Center arrange a meeting with Mr. Wendorf. We are thrilled that he has accepted our offer and are eager for him to begin his tenure at the helm of our district!"

North Canton Schools Seek Input In New Super Choice

The North Canton City School district is looking for a new leader, and they're now asking for more public input on the choice.

The district has put together a survey with the help of the county Educational Survey Center.

The North Canton Board of Education says it's "critical" for the community to be able to provide input on what they're looking for in a superintendent...and says the survey will "play a role" in the selection process.

The survey is available online, and hard copies will be distributed in school district buildings and other public locations in North Canton.

The survey deadline is Februrary 26th.

(North Canton City Schools, news release) As the North Canton City Schools Board of Education works to recruit and hire a new superintendent of schools, board members would like direct input from the North Canton community. They have asked the Stark County Educational Service Center (ESC) to conduct a survey to collect input on their behalf.

"The school district is at the heart of the community. We are in this together, and the board felt it was critical to give North Canton an opportunity to provide input on what they value in a superintendent," said Board President Bruce Hunt. "The survey gives everyone a chance to have a voice and tell us what they think."

The survey is accessible online at ??https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/super-nccs. Additionally, hard copies of the survey are available at all school buildings as well as the district central office, North Canton City Hall, North Canton YMCA, North Canton Public Library and North Canton Chamber of Commerce.

The deadline to complete this survey is Friday, February 26, 2016. The ESC will compile the results, which will play a role in the selection of the district's next superintendent.
