North Canton Names Interim Superintendent

The North Canton City School district officially has a new interim leader.

North Canton School board members approved Jim Nicodemo as interim superintendent. He's already been filling in for former superintendent Michael Hartenstein, whose resignation takes effect in late July and who has been on leave since February 8th.

Nicodemo has superintendent experience and works for the Stark County Educational Service Center, which is leading the search for a new North Canton school superintendent.

The North Canton school board says it hopes to name a new permanent superintendent by early April.

(North Canton City Schools, news release) At Wednesday night's North Canton City Schools Board of Education meeting, the board approved Jim Nicodemo as Interim Superintendent. Nicodemo has been filling in for Superintendent Michael Hartenstein, who took a leave of absence starting on February 8, and whose resignation takes effect on July 31, 2016.

The role of an interim superintendent is to continue to carry the vision and strategic goals of the district in the superintendent's absence to ensure the continued success of students, employees and the overall school community. Nicodemo will report to and work in partnership with the board and will assist in the superintendent search and transition period.

"My family and I live in North Canton, and I know this community," said Nicodemo. "I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve North Canton City Schools at this time."

Nicodemo spent 22 years as a teacher before becoming a principal, and eventually a superintendent. Nicodemo is currently employed through the Stark County Educational Service Center (ESC), who is leading the search for NCCS's new superintendent at the request of the board of education.

"The rough timeline shows us having the final decision made no later than the beginning of April, but that, of course, can change depending on quality of applicants," said Board President Bruce Hunt.

As the North Canton City Schools Board of Education works to recruit and hire a new superintendent of schools, board members would like direct input from the North Canton community. They have asked the ESC to conduct a survey to collect input on their behalf.

The survey is accessible online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/super-nccs. Additionally, hard copies of the survey are available at all school buildings as well as the district central office, North Canton City Hall, North Canton YMCA, North Canton Public Library and North Canton Chamber of Commerce.

The deadline to complete this survey is Friday, February 26, 2016. The ESC will compile the results, which will play a role in the selection of the district's next superintendent.
