This week our 1590 WAKR Student Athlete of the Week is Amicia Powers, a senior indoor track athlete from North High School.

Powers is a three sport athlete competing in volleyball, indoor track , and track and field (outdoor)

She says that the balance between academics and athletics is a tough one, but very doable once you get a hold of time management.

"I balance it by getting my schoolwork done first before practice and our coaches let us get our work done so we can focus during practice," she said. 

Coach Demonte Powell says Amicia has been the vocal and physical leader since her first day of practice.

“She understands without self discipline success is impossible and she carries one of the highest gpa's on the team yearly,” he said.

“She's an athlete that keeps me going and constantly makes me work hard. When she finally leaves it will be a big loss losing such a leader and a team player we in the staff love Amicia dearly and wish her nothing but success .”

In addition to being a three sport athlete, Powers is also a member of Skills USA, the Senior Advisory Board, Viking Voices, and the cheerleading squad.

She says that being a student athlete at North is an honor and a privilege, especially with the international students, many of whom she has grown to be friends with. 

"I think it's good to know where they come from in certain situations," she said. 

Also in the community, she volunteers at the Haven of Rest in Akron, something that she takes pride in as well.

Upon graduation in the spring of 2020, she plans on attending either the University of Akron or Kent State University to study Biology/Pre-Med.

 Our next Male Student Athlete of the Week is Elijah Humphrey, a junior basketball player from North High School.

He says he got into basketball at an early age.

“ I always played since I was little, I started in rec league in third grade, and I just came up from there," he said.

Humphrey is a two sport athlete competing in both basketball and track and field and both are beneficial to his conditioning. 

“It's just easier for me to get up an down the court," 

In addition to being playing two sports for the Vikings, Elijah also is a member of DECA and Viking Voices.

Coach Marc Smith had some good things to say about Humphrey.

For community service, Humphrey also volunteers at the Haven of Rest in Akron. He says giving back to community is something he enjoys and realizes the importance of.

We wish Amicia and Elijah the best in all of their future endeavors.

North High School's Academy of Health and Human Services got a big boost from Akron Children's Hospital this week.

The hospital pledged $400,000 to the Akron Public Schools. $250,000 of that will go to the health care academy, while the other $150,000 will come in the form of internships, teacher externships, and other experiential learning opportunities.

Children's Hospital President and CEO Bill Considine joined Jasen to talk about the donation and the business community's thoughts on the career academy model being rolled out at North.

What schools will be closing? What schools will merge?

Those questions have been on the minds of Akronites for months as the Akron Public Schools decide how to proceed with the plan to build new buildings in the face of reduced funding from the state. A new option, the sixth option presented to the public, would lead to the mergers of Kenmore and Garfield High Schools along with the consolidation of Kent and Innes CLCs at Innes and the consolidation of Bettes and Harris CLCs at Harris. Superintendent David James joined Jasen to talk about the new option and when a final decision could be made.

The North High School Vikings have a brand new football coach, and he is looking to instill toughness, discipline, and a sense of tying the program into the community.

Sonil Haslam joined the Sam Bourquin Show Monday afternoon to talk about how he's going to put his imprint on the program.

He said that he's ready for the challenge of being a head coach.

"I'm pretty excited," says Haslam. "We have to reach out and embrace what we have, and there's tons to do, trying to get things right for the kids."

The City Series is a grind, and with the schools, Haslam says the same group of kids walk the halls at North and the other schools within Akron, so it's all about garnering support and instilling pride in the school and in the community in regards to the football program.

"It's all about peaking interest and getting guys involved," he says.

 Coach Haslam also states that  support from the school, the North Hill community, and the district is important for building the program as well.  Haslam, graduate of East HS, has coached at St. Vincent-St. Mary, Firestone HS, and Archibishop Hoban HS as an assistant.

UPDATE: Summit County health officials have now confirmed a case of tuberculosis in Summit County -- specifically at the North High School community. The county's department of health is currently investigating, but they have not released details related to whether the victim is a student, teacher or staff member.

Officials say they'll be notifying potentially exposed contacts directly about the need for screening and intervention.

County health officials say that hundreds of people in Summit County carry a tuberculosis germ, but that it does not develop into tuberculosis disease in most cases.

Due to privacy and HIPAA laws regulating the use of Protected Health Information (PHI), the individual will not be identified.

Summit County Public Health is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify contacts most at risk of exposure to TB. SCPH will be notifying potentially exposed contacts directly about the need for screening and intervention. Identified individuals will be notified via mail within the next week.

Summit County Public Health will be staffing a TB information-line starting February 11, 2016 at 8:00 am. The TB information-line number is 330-926-5795. For additional information, please visit the Summit County Public Health website at www.scph.org.

Summit County Public Health (SCPH) is conducting a thorough investigation of this incident to identify all potentially exposed individuals and provide guidance and evaluation as necessary.

Tuberculosis Disease (TB) is an uncommon and potentially serious illness that usually involves the lungs. In some cases, people with TB can spread the disease to others. TB is spread through the air by close prolonged contact when a person coughs, speaks, laughs, or sings. It is NOT spread by casual contact, for example, passing someone in the hallway, standing next to someone in the store, using the same bathroom, or contact with surfaces.

Almost all cases of TB are curable with proper treatment and medication.
Active cases of TB disease are uncommon after initial exposure. While TB is
contagious, it is not very easy for the disease to spread from person to person.

Therefore, there is minimal risk to the greater Summit County public. Summit County Public Health is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease
