AUDIO DeWine Announces Run for Governor

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine made the announcement that the entire state was expecting over the weekend: he's running for Governor in 2018.

DeWine made the announcement during his annual Ice Cream Social at his family's home in Cedarville, Ohio.

"I think I'm very well prepared and will be ready to go from Day 1 to make the decisions that a governor has to make," DeWine told the Jasen Sokol Show on 1590 WAKR during an interview Monday.

Of the challenges facing the state that DeWine said he'd be ready to face, the opioid crisis was tops on his list. He says he'll advocate for prevention programs in all Ohio schools, for students K through 12, to help nip addiction or even first-time drug use in the bud. DeWine says it's not necessarily about drug education, but really healthy life choices and decision making skills.

Speaking of education, the Attorney General says that there needs to be more accountability among Ohio's charter schools and all public schools in the state. He says he's not for more testing, but definitely for accountability.

With eight people found dead in Pike County in Southern Ohio, police and the Ohio Attorney General's office say it's too early to say if the shooter who killed the victims of one family "execution style" is still out there, or among the dead.

Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader told reporters in Piketon on Friday afternoon though it's not an active shooter situation, they have keep in mind that someone who is very dangerous could be out there.

"I am still actively looking for a shooter. Now, I want to remind you that we are very early in this investigation. We are investigating four active crime scenes at this time," Reader said late Friday afternoon.

Reader says none of the eight victims committed suicide. He says those scenes are miles apart, and that the victims were all adults except for one boy.

Attorney General Mike DeWine said three children survived the shootings, ages four days old; six months old and three years old.

"This is just heartbreaking," DeWine told reporters. "The one mom, apparently, was killed in her bed...with the four-day old right there."

DeWine calls it a "horrible tragedy" and says he's been keeping the office of Governor Kasich updated
