DNA Leads To 28-Year Rape Sentence

There's still business to be done in the courts before the Thanksgiving holiday gets underway. A 57-year old Akron man was handed a 28-year prison sentence for raping a woman in 2000.

Efrem Johnson is already serving a life sentence for the murder of 24-year old Jacob Courie, who was home in Akron on leave from service in the Army. A DNA sample linked Johnson to the sexual assault of a woman who was lured into nearby woods from an Akron street.

(Summit County Prosecutor) Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh announced today that Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Paul Gallagher sentenced Efrem Johnson, 57, of Raymond Street in Akron, to 28 years in prison for the rape of a woman in 2000.

On October 11, 2016, a Summit Count jury found Johnson guilty of the following charges:

One Count of Rape – a felony of the 1st degree
One Count of Kidnapping – a felony of the 1st degree
One Count of Felonious Assault – a felony of the 2nd degree

In August of 2000, Johnson lured a woman from an Akron street into nearby woods, where he beat and raped her. DNA collected from the victim following the attack was matched to Johnson in 2014.

Johnson is currently serving a life sentence for the March 2010 murder of 24-year-old Jacob Courie. Courie was serving in the Army at the time and was on leave when he was shot by Johnson while walking on East Exchange Street in Akron. The new 28 year sentence will run consecutive to the 2010 life sentence.
