Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier held a press conference regarding the double-homicide Monday in North Canton. 

Rogell John II and his wife, Roberta, were found dead inside their home on Mount Pleasant Street NW Monday afternoon around 4:20. Their son found them and call 911. Deputies responded and they were both dead on the scene. 

Since that time, detectives with the Stark County Sheriff's Office determined that their suspect was 45-year-old George C. Brinkman of Brunswick. Sheriff Maier said, in his press conference, that Brinkman has been watching the Johns' home while they were away on vacation. Whether he was staying in the home or just checking in, and for how long, have not been determined yet, according to the Sheriff. 

On Tuesday, a warrant was issued for two counts of murder for Brinkman. 

Prior to the warrants being issued, Brinkman was the subject of a police standoff outside a Brunswick home on Valley Forge Drive. It started around 9 Monday night and lasted through the early morning hours Tuesday. It ended, without incident, and with Brinkman in handcuffs. 

During the press conference Tuesday, Sheriff Maier said that his office received a call from North Royalton Police on Sunday afternoon regarding Brinkman. At that point, North Royalton PD had established Brinkman as a person of interest in connection to the triple-homicide on Ridge Road near Wallings Road over the weekend. Suzanne Taylor and her daughters, 21-year-old Taylor Pifer and 18-year-old Kylie Pifer, were found dead inside that home on Ridge Rd. Saturday, but weren't found until the next day. Sheriff Maier says that North Royalton PD called his office because it was reported to them that Brinkman had sometimes stayed at a home in Stark County.

While charges have been filed out of Stark County, it appears no charges have been filed in North Royalton as of Tuesday afternoon, though Brinkman is being held in North Royalton Jail.

Stark County deputies, along with member of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, has arrested a second adult in connection with a burglary that turned into a chase by police following a traffic stop. 19-year old Ja'lon Kirkland was picked up Thursday and joins fellow accused accomplice, 19-year old Raejon Marquell Williams, in the Stark County Jail. Police say Kirkland and Williams were both involved in a burglary in progress when they responded to the scene of a Plain Township home but fled, with one brandishing a weapon during a traffic stop on 30th Street NE.

(Stark County Sheriff) Sheriff George T. Maier is announcing the arrest of 19-year-old Ja’lon Kirkland in connection with an aggravated burglary in Plain Township. On Wednesday, May 3, 2017 deputies responded to a residence in the 2500 block of Cathy Drive NE in Plain Township for an aggravated burglary in progress.

Witnesses stated the suspects brandished a firearm and then fled the scene in a box truck. Responding Deputies located the suspect vehicle in the area and initiated a traffic stop as the vehicle fled east on 30th St NE. The vehicle came to a stop in the area of 30th St NE and Willowrow Ave NE. Kirkland and 19-year-old Raejon Williams fled on foot. Williams was arrested Wednesday, shortly after the incident took place and was booked into the Stark County Jail on charges of Aggravated Burglary and Obstruction of Official Business.

Kikland was taken into custody by deputies at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 4th, 2017 with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Task Force. He was arrested at his home in Canton without incident on arrest warrants charging him with Aggravated Burglary and Obstruction of Official Business. He has been booked into the Stark County Jail.

PREVIOUS FROM THURSDAY

Stark County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a burglary in progress at a home on Cathy Drive NE Wednesday. Two suspects entered the home and pulled guns on the residents. Then they loaded an ATV and a motorcycle into a box truck and sped off. Responding deputies noticed the truck and pulled the suspects over. That's when they fled on foot. One suspect, 19-year-old Raejon Marquell Williams was caught and arrested, the second suspect is still on the loose. After the fact, Deputies arrested a female juvenile in connection. She's been booking in Stark County Juvenile Detention Center. Inside the truck Deputies found a gun and an airsoft pistol. 

Stark County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Marshalls worked together on their latest bust of three suspected heroin dealers in the Akron area.

Two Massillon residents, Damon Marcus Slocum and Tiffany Angel Kegley are charged with involuntary manslaughter for providing the heroin that Sean Latham killed Sean Latham last May. Vernall Floyd Robinson was arrested for selling the heroin that resulted in a non-lethal overdose of another area resident. He's charged with Corrupting Another with Drugs, a second degree felony.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce several arrests as part of the ongoing effort to
combat the local heroin epidemic.

Sheriff George T. Maier commends the hard work and dedication of the employees of the sheriff’s office as well as
numerous partners in the effort to keep communities safe.

Sheriff Maier: “The indictments Tuesday are a direct result of our deputies and investigators working collaboratively
to combat the heroin epidemic here in Stark County.”

On February 14, 2017, Stark County Sheriff’s Major of Investigative Services, John Oliver, along with members of
the Metro Narcotics Unit and the U.S. Marshall’s Violent Fugitive Task Force, conducted two arrest warrants.
Major Oliver: “Our metro agents are committed to continuing to investigate all overdose related cases to their fullest
to hold those accountable for their actions.”

An arrest warrant was executed in Akron where deputies located and arrested 36-year-old Damon Marcus Slocum
and 31-year-old Tiffanie Angel Kegley at their home, each on a charge of Involuntary Manslaughter, a Felony 1.
Detectives determined Slocum and Kegley directly contributed to the death of Sean Latham in May, 2016 by
supplying him with the heroin that caused his fatal overdose.

A roughly three-month-long investigation led detectives to conduct a second arrest warrant at a home in Massillon.
23-year-old Vernall Floyde Robinson has been charged with one count of Corrupting Another with Drugs, a Felony 2;
and Tampering with Evidence, a Felony 3.

The charges come after a person overdosed on heroin in a public restroom. The victim was transported to the
hospital where he received long-term care for a serious medical condition caused by the heroin Robinson distributed.
The investigations represent a strong partnership between multiple law enforcement agencies and the Stark County
Prosecutor’s Office. Each play a critical role in keeping Stark County safe.

Stark County Assistant Prosecutor Fred Scott offers this comment on behalf of County Prosecutor John Ferrero:
“As our county fights the heroin epidemic together, our office will do all we can to assist the justice system and
treatment community to sensibly rehabilitate heroin users. But, we will continue to work with law enforcement to
aggressively prosecute heroin traffickers and hold them accountable for the death and misery their deadly product
spreads.

Update: As of 11:30 a.m. Friday the lockdown at Glenoak High School had been lifted. There is no official word on any arrests or any other information regarding the nature or seriousness of the threats written on the walls of the bathrooms. The Sheriff's Office has determined, however, that students and staff are safe to resume normal operations.

Friday morning Wadsworth Police were alerted by someone who claimed to be a student at Wadsworth High School that there was an intruder on the school's campus. The school was placed on lockdown for more than an hour as the Wadsworth Police responded and investigated. 

It wasn't long before police determined that the threat was not credible and there was no intruder on campus. As a follow up, all of the buildings on campus were checked over and the lockdown was lifted just after 10:30 a.m. 

In an unrelated incident, Glenoak High School was also placed on lockdown Friday morning in response to threats that were written on the walls of a "couple" of bathrooms on campus. 

Plain Local Schools Treasurer Kathy Jordan tells WAKR.net that the Stark County Sheriff's Office was called immediately to investigate the nature of those threats, though she said she could not go into any further details while the investigation was ongoing. 

"No child is in danger, no one's been hurt, but we did go into lockdown," Jordan said, as a precaution. She went on to say that people often hear the term "lockdown" and fear the worst, but that is a standard procedure as the safety of all of their students is the number one priority. 

As of 11 a.m. Friday, the Stark County Sheriff's Office was still investigating the written threats, but again, there was no real concern regarding the safety of the students at Glenoak High School.

The Stark County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident in Plain Township. 

According to the report, a man's body was found along State Route 62 at Middlebranch Avenue NE in Plain Township around 10 p.m. Tuesday. When Sheriff's Deputies arrived he was confirmed dead on the scene. 

Witnesses say the vehicle that struck the man is a 2011 or 2012 Hyundai Sonata, though the color of the vehicle is unknown. Police say it likely has damage to the front passenger-side bumper and passenger-side mirror. 

Anyone with information is asked to call the Stark County Sheriff's Office at 330-430-3800. 

As we head into the July 4th weekend, new numbers from Stark County show that traffic fatalities went up in the last three months.

The Stark County Sheriff's Office says there were 7 fatal crashes, and 8 people killed in crashes, in April, May and June this year. That's up from the same time last year by three fatal crashes and three killed.

There have been 11 fatal crashes since the start of the year, and 13 deaths. That's also up from the first half of last year.

(Stark County Safe Communities/Stark County Sheriff's Office, news release) According to data currently available there were 7 fatal crashes resulting in 8 traffic fatalities in Stark County during the second quarter of 2016.

Compared to the same time frame in 2015, this is an increase of 3 fatal crashes (75%) and 3 traffic fatalities (62.5%).

Stark County has had 11 reported fatal traffic crashes during the first half of 2016, resulting in 13 traffic deaths. There were 7 fatal crashes and 8 traffic deaths for the same time period in 2015.

Four of the seven fatal traffic crashes between April 1, 2016 and June 30, 2016 occurred in the last 15 days of the quarter.

Alcohol and drug results for several of the recent crashes are not available at this time. For the fatal crashes during 2016 in which alcohol and/or drug results are known, almost 67% of the crashes (75% of victims) have involved an alcohol and/or drug impaired driver. During the first 6 months of 2015, approximately 29% of fatal crashes and 25% of the fatalities were drug and/or alcohol related.

Seat belt use in fatal crashes was 80% during the second quarter of 2016 and an average of 70% for the year to date. Seat belt use in fatal crashes for the second quarter of 2015 was 25% and approximately 29% for the first half of 2015.

Stark County victims ranged in age from 16 years to 72 years old with 77% under the age of 30. Female victims represented 38.5% of the fatalities and males 61.5%.
