(University of Akron) - More than 100 local youth will team up with police officers representing The University of Akron, Akron City, Copley Township, Fairlawn, Bath Township, Summa Health and the Summit County Sheriff’s Department to enjoy ‘Christmas with a Cop’ this Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018.

Referred by local school districts, these youngsters will have the opportunity to enjoy a ride to Fairlawn in a cruiser, complete with lights and sirens, where they will enjoy a hearty breakfast before embarking on a $100 shopping spree at the Walmart in Fairlawn.

Officers have been raising money for the event since September by selling raffle tickets.

Officer Pamela Helmick, a 21-year veteran of The University of Akron Police Department, looks forward to the event each year. “Giving back to the community is important, and I am so happy that I get to be part of it,” she said. “It’s wonderful to spend time with the kids and see the excitement this event brings to them.”

While participants are encouraged to shop for gifts for themselves, many often prefer to purchase gifts for family members in need. “It is heartwarming to see how much they want to help their own family,” Helmick said. “We always have some extra gift cards on hand to make sure they can still buy something for themselves.”

The University of Akron was locked down briefly after a gun accidentally went off in a dorm at the Exchange Street Residence Hall early Saturday morning.

According to UA Police, the call of a gunshot that was heard coming from a campus dorm was made about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. When police arrived, they found that a 19-year-old from Bedford was shot in the stomach after a gun that a 17-year-old was carrying and reportedly went off accidentally.

The victim, identified as Tommy Micah Lavette was transported to Akron General, there's been no update on his injuries. The 17-year-old suspect, whose name hasn't been released, was arrested, charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, and taken to Summit County Juvenile Center.

The lockdown was lifted around 2:15 Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident is reportedly still ongoing.

The University of Akron (UA) cares deeply about our campus community, and we are steadfast in our commitment to the safety and security of our students, employees, visitors and guests.

The University of Akron Police Department’s preliminary investigation of an incident that occurred early this morning shows that two non-University of Akron individuals were let into the Exchange Street Resident Hall late Friday evening or early Saturday morning by as-yet unidentified person(s). During a visit to a room of an acquaintance in the residence hall, there was what appears to have been an accidental discharge of a handgun, resulting in a wound to the abdomen of the victim, 19-year old Tommy Micah Lavette of Bedford, Ohio. He was transported to Akron General Cleveland Clinic Hospital where he is being treated for his injury. No one else was injured. The suspect, a 17-year old male, also of Bedford, was taken into custody and transported to the Summit County Juvenile Center. He has been charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm. Both the police investigation and the University’s review of the incident are ongoing.

UA prohibits firearms in residence halls and requires resident students to have responsibility for the actions of any guests. This incident underscores the importance of this policy.

We understand that this situation was very concerning for many people and University representatives from the Division of Student Affairs and Residence Life and Housing have been on scene and providing support to other UA students. They also will be discussing campus safety and additional ways to improve our efforts with students in the days ahead.

We appreciate the cooperation of all parties as University officials and the University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) continue the investigation. University of Akron Police are investigating a shooting just off campus along South Adolph Avenue, just east of campus and Route 8. 

According to the police report, the shooting happened Monday afternoon about 1:15. One 26-year-old male victim was shot in the foot and transported to Summa Akron City Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say the victim hasn't been cooperative with them and hasn't provided a suspect description. 

The only thing police know is that a male suspect fled the scene on foot, running through backyards toward campus. 

Anyone with information is asked to call Akron PD or University of Akron PD. 

University of Akron police are looking into a report that a man touched a woman inappropriately in a campus parking lot.

The woman in her car reported that she was approached by a man asking for directions while she was in the South Campus lot Wednesday afternoon.

She told police that the man reached in and put his hand down her shirt while she was looking up the information on her phone.

Police say he left in a gray car with temporary tags starting with the letters "D" and "O".

The woman didn't require treatment and no weapon was shown.

(UAPD advisory) University police are seeking any information you may have related to incident that occurred about 2:10 this afternoon in the South Campus Parking Deck (Lot 36).

A woman in her vehicle was approached by a man who asked for directions. Attempting to help, the woman looked up information on her cell phone. The man reached in the vehicle and put his hand down her shirt. He walked away, entered a gray car and drove away. The gray car had temporary tags, beginning with "D" and "O."

The woman did not require medical treatment. No weapon was shown.

The man is described as a tall, light-skinned black male, weighing about 160 pounds and in his 20s. He was wearing a light gray or light green T-shirt.

UPDATE 1:15 PM 9/8/16: The victim of a shooting near the University of Akron campus is still recovering.

Akron police say that 22 year-old Michael Jones was shot four times in the neck and chest after the shooting on Power Street on Wednesday afternoon.

He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he's reported to be in stable condition.

Akron police and UA police are still investigating.

Three people, including the shooter, were seen driving away from the scene in a silver car.

(Earlier coverage) Akron police and University of Akron police are looking into a shooting this afternoon just south of campus.

Police say three suspects - including one shooter - were involved in the shooting near Rentschler and Power Streets at about 2:40, and that a victim is being treated at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.

There's no immediate word on any condition.

The university says it appears that the victim is not a UA student.

The men were seen on video driving north on Rentschler Street in a silver car.

University of Akron police are asking anyone with more information to call UA police detectives.

(University of Akron notice) City of Akron and University police are asking for any information you may have related to a shooting that occurred about 2:40 p.m. today near Rentschler and Power streets, south of campus.

A witness described the shooter as a black male wearing a blue hoodie and gray sweatpants. He was accompanied by two other black males, one wearing a red shirt and the other, a black and yellow hoodie.

The three were observed on video driving north on Rentschler Street in a silver car. No further description was immediately available.

A victim was being treated at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Early indications are that the victim is not a student.
