Back on December 14th, pizza delivery man Byron Davis of Akron crashed his car into a ditch outside the home of a Green resident.

Davis' car needed to be towed out out of the ditch and suffered some damages.

Two days later, the Summit County Sheriff's Office says that Davis began calling the department's Communications Center, threatening to kill people if the repairs weren't paid for by the county and/or the City of Green.

Well, two days after the phone calls, on December 18th, Mr. Davis was arrested and charged with inducing panic and aggravated menacing.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly crash along East Turkeyfoot Lake Road in the City of Green Thursday morning. 

According to the Sheriff's report, around 7:30 a.m., a 71-year-old man driving a yellow Corvette eastbound on East Turkeyfoot collided with a tractor trailer that was waiting to turn into a gas station, and then hit another car. 

The driver of the Corvette, a 71-year-old resident of Green, was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Neither the driver of the truck nor the driver of the Civic were injured. 

East Turkeyfoot Lake Road was closed for roughly three hours after the accident Thursday morning. 

Investigators with the Sheriff's Office do not suspect that alcohol played a factor in the accident. 

(City of Green) Green Mayor Gerard Neugebauer is pleased to announce that the Green Fire Division administered Narcan, the antidote to reverse a drug overdose, 20 less times (or 33% less) in 2018 than the prior year. In 2018, Green Fire administered Narcan 40 times during emergency calls versus 60 and 83 times in 2017 and 2016, respectively.

"Through the national attention directed to opioid addiction and collaborative efforts of our Summit County Task Force and the Green Drug Task Force, the message is getting through," said Gerard Neugebauer. "We are thankful that the numbers are going down and less families are seeing the impact of drug use and addiction.”

In January 2017, Green launched its Green Outreach (GO) team, a quick response team comprised of Green Fire Medics, Summit County Sherriff Deputies and social workers from the Orianna House visit homes in the City of Green within a week of an overdose to offer support, education and assistance.

The team quickly expanded their visits to include not only those who overdosed the prior week, but to anyone who had called for emergency service where drugs or alcohol were involved. In 2018, the Green Outreach Team visited 71 residents to offer support and help. Thirty-two of them responded favorably and actively sought treatment.

“I am exceedingly proud of our Green Outreach Team that visits homes of those impacted by drug or alcohol abuse to offer support and help to those in need and their families."


In addition to the Green Outreach Team, the Green Drug Task Force, an all-volunteer group formed in 2016, to educate the public, offer support to families in need, and prevent drug abuse in our community. The Drug Task Force meets every other month on the first Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Central Administration Building. The first 2019 meeting of the Drug Task Force is February 5. Green Fire Chief Jeffrey Funai tells the Akron Beacon Journal that the fire at the Kids Country Daycare on Town Park Boulevard started in a bathroom in the gym, and then spread to the roof.

With five fire companies responding, firefighters had the clames out within 10 minutes.

The daycare posted to social media that no kids were in the building at the time, but that they'll be closed the rest of the week, and that parents should make alternate child care plans.

 

 

The cause is still under investigation.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says they've arrested two men accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and other items from the MAPS Air Museum in Green. 

The alleged theft happened back on October 3rd, when the two teenages walked in, one acting as a lookout and the other stuffing things like helmets, goggles, oxygen masks, and more in a bag.

A press release was sent out Monday and the suspects' pictures were posted to social media. Later in the day the two were arrested. Their names haven't been released.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office is looking for help finding two suspects (pictured) that walked into the MAPS Air Museum for a tour back on October 3rd and walked out with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the facility. 

  

According to Inspector Bill Holland's press release, the museum, located at 2260 International Parkway in the City of Green, reported several missing items, including helmets, goggles, oxygen masks, helicopter controls, and other irreplaceable items. 

The suspects were captured on security footage, and now detectives are asking anyone who might recognize them or have more information to please contact them at 330-642-2131.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office has announced felony charges against 28-year-old Dean Davis of Green who is alleged to have sexually assaulted a 4-year-old boy in the boy's mother's home that was caught on a home surveillance camera.

Inspector Bill Holland added in a press release Tuesday that the boy's mother, 31-year-old Samantha Ward, who has three other children, was aware of the incident and didn't report it.

Green has been booked on Gross Sexual Imposition and other charges, while Ward, who is alleged to have been taking medications prescribed to her other children, is charged with endangering children and theft of drugs.

Additional charges are pending further investigation, according to Holland.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office was contacted in regards to an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the city of Green. An investigation was initiated by the Sheriff’s Detective Bureau. It was reported that a household surveillance camera captured the assault on video. The alleged victim of the sexual assault was a 4 year old male. The child’s mother was supposedly aware of the incident, but failed to report it. The above victim and three other children were interviewed and subsequently turned over to Summit County Children’s Services.

The investigation revealed that the individual depicted in the video was Dean A. Davis. Davis was arrested and charged with Gross Sexual Imposition (F-3), Sexual Imposition (M-3), and Endangering Children (M-1). Further charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. Davis, age 28 of Green, was transported to the Summit County Jail.

Through the investigation, it was determined that the mother of the four children, Samantha Ward, created a substantial risk to the health and safety of her children. It was also believed that she was consuming medication that belonged to her children. Samantha L. Ward, age 31 of Green, was arrested and charged with Endangering Children (M-1) and Theft of Drugs (F-5). Additional charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. She was transported to the Summit County Jail. Follow-up questions should be directed to Inspector Bill Holland at 330-620-9738.

Trent Turner, 28, of Cleveland, will spend the rest of his life for the murder of 27-year-old Corey S. Seibel. 

The shooting happened back in November of 2015, when Turner and two other accomplices entered Seibel's Green home, attempting to steal a pound of marijuana. During the encounter, Seibel was shot twice by Turner, while Turner's girlfriend and child slept in a nearby room. Both accomplices have already been sentenced to 14 years apiece in the case. Turner, who the other men described as the shooter, was sentenced to life in prison by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Amy Corrigal Jones on Tuesday. He will not be eligible for parole for at least 36 years.

AKRON, Ohio (Tuesday, August 08, 2017) – Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh announced today that Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Amy Corrigall-Jones sentenced Trent Turner, 28, of Ansel Road in Cleveland, to Life in Prison for the murder of 27-year-old Corey Seibel. Turner will be eligible for parole after serving 36 years in prison. Judge Corrigall-Jones also determined Tuner is a repeat violent offender under Ohio law.

On August 1, 2017 a Summit County jury found Turner guilty of the following charges:

• One Count of Murder with a Gun Specification – a special felony
• Three Counts of Aggravated Robbery with Gun Specifications – felonies of the 1^st degree
• Two Counts of Aggravated Burglary with Gun Specifications – felonies of the 1^st degree
• Two Counts of Felonious Assault with Gun Specifications – felonies of 2^nd degree
• One Count of Grand Theft with a Gun Specification – a felony of the 3^rd degree
• One Count of Trespass in a habitation with a Gun Specification – a felony of the 4^th degree
• One Count of Having a Weapon Under Disability – a felony of the 3^rd degree
• One Count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon – a felony of the 4^th degree

“Corey leaves behind a family which will miss him every day, especially his 7-year-old daughter. No amount of justice will bring Corey back, but society is safer knowing Mr. Turner will be in prison for a long period of time,” said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Margaret Scott. “Tomorrow would have been Corey’s 29^th birthday. My hope is that his family finds some solace knowing the person who committed these crimes is finally being held accountable.”

In November of 2015, Turner was with two other people when all three went to Seibel’s apartment in Green to rob him. During the robbery, Turner shot Seibel several times. Two of Seibel’s friends were in the apartment at the time. Turner’s co-defendants, Spencer Sims and Ty’Shawn Henderson, both pled guilty and were each sentenced to 14 years in prison.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal accident that happened in the City of Green Sunday evening. 

According to the report, a 2017 Suzuki Gladius motorcycle was traveling southbound on South Main Street when a 1999 Ford Escort, heading northbound, attempted to make a left turn into a home along South Main Street. The Escort crossed traffic and the motorcycle collided with it, launching the rider off of the bike. The 20-year-old rider ended up nearly 50 feet from the original accident spot. His bike landed in northbound traffic along South Main, where another driver ran into it. 

The motorcyclist was transported by the Green Fire Department to Akron City Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 22-year-old female driver of the Escort suffered minor injuries on the scene. The other driver was unharmed.

No charges have been filed yet and it is unclear whether speed, alcohol, or other drugs factored into the crash. It remains under investigation. 

Stark State College has announced that NEXUS Gas Transmission, LLC, has presented the school with a $50,000 scholarship donation during a presentation ceremony Tuesday.

The college's campus is near where NEXUS is looking to route its pipeline, pending approval from the federal government, and offers relevant training for students in the oil and gas industry programs. Stark said, in a press release, that the money will be put toward industry-related programs, scholarships, or facility improvements for students in that field.

The NEXUS pipeline proposal has been met with local opposition, including from the City of Green and local activist groups.

CANTON – NEXUS Gas Transmission, LLC (NEXUS) presented Stark State College with a $50,000 scholarship donation during a check presentation ceremony held earlier today.

Stark State is located near the proposed NEXUS route and offers relevant training for many careers in the oil and gas industry. As indicated by the college, the one-time donation will be used to support industry related programs, scholarships or training facility improvement for students pursuing certification and training to work in the oil and gas industry.

“We are grateful for this donation and the ability to use it to directly support hands-on training activities related to OSHA Safety Classes, Environmental Compliance Sampling of soils, water and air, and Department of Transportation (DOT)-required Operator Qualification training,” said Stark State College President Para M. Jones, Ph.D. “These skills and certifications are critical components of the labor force needs related to gas, water and other infrastructure projects throughout the region.”

The college executed a memorandum of understanding with NEXUS to ensure that funds are allocated to directly benefit students specializing in training for the oil and gas industry. If dollars are allocated for a student scholarship, Stark State officials will select the recipient and determine how the funds will be distributed.

“We value the role that Stark State College plays in educating and training the labor force in the region,” said NEXUS Spokesman Adam Parker. “Stark State has a positive reputation for attracting and retaining the most talented students and we are proud to support their efforts. Our investment today is rooted in our commitment to help build a highly skilled employee base in communities where we work and operate.”

The NEXUS Project is a proposed 255-mile natural gas pipeline that would run from eastern Ohio to existing pipeline system interconnects in southeastern Michigan. The proposed pipeline has been under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) review and permitting process since 2015. A decision on the Project’s Application for Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity is currently pending.

Construction of the NEXUS project is estimated to support 6,800 jobs, more than $650 million in wages, and $830 million in total economic activity. In its first five years of operation, NEXUS will generate an estimated cumulative tax revenue of $412 million, of which approximately $116 million will go directly to local school districts in Ohio.

Summit County Sheriff's Office reporting one man died in a single-car accident in the City of Green over the weekend. 

On Saturday just about 12:30 p.m., police say the 75-year-old male driver of a Chevy Silverado drove off the left side of Mayfair Road and hit a tree. When EMS arrived, the man was already dead. 

The Sheriff's Office has not released the victim's name. They say they do no suspect alcohol was a factor. 

 

 

 

Former City of Green Little League President Tim McCloud has been arrested, charged with theft and money laundering dating back to the time he held the office. 

According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, the president who took over when McCloud left his role noticed about $10,000 missing from an account linked to the little league program. Upon further investigation, Inspector Bill Holland with the Sheriff's Office says they found a total of $27,000 that was unaccounted for. That investigation lead right to McCloud, who had set up a new account while in office. That account combined league fees and donations with some of McCloud's personal funds. It was discovered that McCloud was using those funds for personal expenses. 

McCloud's been booked in Summit County Jail on two felony charges of Theft and Money Laundering. 

Summit County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspects who they say entered the Queen of Heaven Church in the City of Green on December 8, and stole a woman's purse while she was in line for Communion. 

The 79-year-old victim says she left her purse unattended in the pew, but the Sheriff's Office says the theft was captured on surveillance camera. The two suspects, identified as Raymond B. Jarvis, 53, and Michelle L. Wells, 38, went to local Acme and Dollar General stores and used the woman's stolen credit cards to but more than $1,000 worth of items.

 

It is reportedly not the first church theft the two suspects have been a part of. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, similar thefts have been reported and they've been named the suspects. One of the reported incidents happened at a church in Iowa.

Warrants have been issued for both Jarvis and Wells. Anyone with information is asked to call the Summit County Sheriff's Office at 330-643-8637. 

The Summit County Sheriff's Office, along with the local FBI office, says they've arrested 10 people during a prostitution and human trafficking sting Thursday. 

Inspector Bill Holland says the bust was part of an ongoing investigation in an attempt to crack down on human trafficking in the county and beyond. The operation included undercover deputies and agents who were contacted through websites that advertise sexual services for money. All of the arrests were made at a Green hotel where the parties agreed to meet while online. 

The 10 who were arrested are facing charges ranging from prostitution to possession of cocaine. 

When asked why Ohio sees such a large number of human trafficking cases compared to other states, Inspector Holland said there are a number of theories, but the number of interstates that run through Ohio definitely factor in. Holland also mentioned Ohio's close proximity to the Canadian border. 

 

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says they've arrested five teenagers, between the ages of 16 and 19, in connection to Tuesday morning's arson fire that destroyed the Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse at Boettler Park. 

It happened between 4 and 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. In addition to the fire at the schoolhouse, that was first built in 1885 and restored in 2002, investigators noticed other acts of vandalism throughout the park. They say a bathroom had been broken into on the grounds and significant damage was done inside. Also, the teens threw trash cans onto the rooftops of other buildings throughout the park.  

On Thursday morning, the Sheriff's Office released that they've arrested a 16-year-old male from Springfield Township, a 16-year-old female from Springfield Township, another 16-year-old male from Akron, 18-year-old Brandyn McCroskey, and 19-year-old Matthew R. Swan, both of Springfield Township. All five are charged with fifth-degree felony breaking and entering, fifth-degree felony vandalism, and fourth-degree felony arson. Swan and McCroskey were booked into the Summit County Jail while the juveniles were transported to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center. 

Sheriff Steve Barry says he is pleased with the expedient and thorough investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of all suspects involved. City of Green Mayor Gerard Neugebauer also releasing a statement: “Thank you to the Summit County Sheriff, Green’s Fire Division and the Ohio State Fire Marshal for their quick work in finding the individuals who caused this irreparable damage to our beloved historical schoolhouse."

A fire, now ruled as arson, destroyed a historic schoolhouse at Boettler Park in Green early Tuesday morning.

City officials say firefighters were called out to the restored 1885 Licthenwalter Schoolhouse around 4 a.m. to battle the blaze. It's a total loss, according to officials. City officials say the State Fire Marshall ruled the fire as arson. Mayor Gerard Neugebauer said more property was found damaged at the park and Ariss Park on Wise Road overnight.

Neugebauer didn't go into detail on the vandalism incidents, but he did note that someone broke into the bathrooms through a window and "did some destructive activity."

The schoolhouse, originally built in Green Township, was located on Mt. Pleasant Road on land owned by Robert Boettler. Boettler moved the schoolhouse to a piece of land, which later became Boettler Park.

Neugebauer said it's a loss for the community and the students who have used the classroom to learn about the history of the schoolhouse. The building is used by the City of Green Division of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation Commission and the Green Local School District.

"Historically, it's probably the most important structure that we have and have preserved."

Boettler Park closed today due to the blaze and cleanup. It's scheduled to reopen at 8 AM on Wednesday.

A reward is being offered by the Ohio Blue Ribbon Arson Committee for any tips leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the Summit County Sheriff's Department at 330-643-2181 or Green Fire investigations at 330-896-1811.

(City of Green) Boettler Park, 5300 Massillon Road, in Green will be closed today due to a fire at the Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse, a restored 1885 historic schoolhouse at the park. At 4:51 a.m., Green Fire Department responded with mutual aid from Jackson and Greentown Fire Department. The structure is a total loss. The cause is under investigation.

As more details and info becomes available, it will be released to the media.
