Brittany Anderson of Akron is accused of stealing state child-care benefits and tampering with records.

According to the Summit County Sheriff's Office, Anderson, 28, used falsified documents to receive nearly $6,000 in benefits from the Department of Job and Family Services between December 2017 and May of this year.

Anderson was arrested on Monday, December 16th, on charges of felony tampering with records and felony theft of child care benefits. She's been booked into the Summit County Jail. 

An Akron Police Motorcycle Officer was seriously injured when he was pinned underneath the van of a suspected drunk driver after a crash Saturday night. 

According to the APD report, the officer was on his motorcycle and was attempting to stop another vehicle at the intersection of South Portage Path and Bloomfield Avenue, when Corrie Sharpe, 65, who was driving her minivan eastbound on Bloomfield, failed to yield to the officer. She collided with the officer's motorcycle, sending him off the bike and pinning him underneath her van. 

The officer was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital with serious injuries. Other officers responding to the scene conducted a field sobriety test and gave Sharpe a breathalyzer, both of which she reportedly failed. The report states that her blood alcohol content registered at .125; the legal limit in Ohio is .08. Sharpe was arrested and charged with OVI, Aggravated Vehicular Assault, and Child Endangering, as her 11-year-old granddaughter was reportedly in the back seat of her van. 

As of Sunday morning, the officer involved in the accident was still listed in serious condition. 

Akron Police are investigating yet another robbery that happened during a planned sale of a cellphone. 

The latest case was from Wednesday night around 8, when a 43-year-old man who drove to a public business along South Arlington Street to meet the seller of a cellphone he'd seen through an ad on Facebook. 

The victim met the seller inside, inspected the phone, and laid cash on the counter. That's when the suspect, identified as Dwayne A. Nixon, 18, of Triplett Boulevard in Akron, took off with both the phone and the cash. 

The victim immediately called police and officers, with the help of K9 officers, were able to track down Nixon and arrest him. He's been charged with two counts of theft and more, and booked into Summit County Jail. 

This is the ninth case in recent weeks of someone being robbed during a meeting that was arranged through social media, but Akron Police aren't saying whether Nixon was involved in any of the previous thefts. 

Akron Police, now, are offering tips to anyone who is looking to purchase a cellphone, or anything else, through social media: 

• Review the buyer or seller’s profile before agreeing to meet.

• Communicate with the buyer or seller through the social media site only.

• Choose carefully where you agree to meet.

• Select a location that is a public place, well lit, surveillance cameras, and a large amount of traffic.

• Never agree to meet at their residence and don’t invite people to your residence.

• If you agree to meet them at a public place, take a family member or friend. Never go alone.

Akron Police were called to ManorCare Health Services at 1211 West Market Street on a call of a domestic robbery Tuesday afternoon. 

According to the report, the victim, a 75-year-old man, told police that his son, 38-year-old Kahli Murphy (pictured), showed up to his residence asking for money. When the victim told Murphy that all he could give him was $20, Murphy became aggravated and left. About 10 minutes later, Murphy allegedly returned to the room and physically assaulted his father, choking him, and then took his wallet from his back pocket and ran. 

A short time later, police found Murphy at his house on South Rhodes Avenue, and arrested him on domestic violence and robbery. Murphy was booked in Summit County Jail Tuesday night and was scheduled for a court appearance Wednesday morning, according to police. 

Bond has been set for David Callaghan who is charged in the murder of his ex-girlfriend whose body was found in a shallow grave in his Crouse Street home over the weekend.

During an initial appearance, that lasted just a couple of minutes in Akron Municipal Court via a live video feed from the Summit County Jail, Judge Annalisa Williams put the bond at $2 Million. 

Robin Freitag had been missing since July. Police say she was killed August 6th, and that's when Callaghan buried her body. Local authorities dug up her remains Friday in the back yard of the home at 606 Crouse Street. 

Judge Williams announced that she would appoint an attorney for Callaghan. 

Akron Police have arrested 35-year-old Jordan DeHaven for killing his girlfriend. 

According to the report, Amy Rowan, 41, was reported missing by her mother, whom she lived with on Darrow Road, Friday evening around 6:30. Initially, after APD had contacted DeHaven, he denied knowing anything about it. Later Friday, around 9:30 p.m., police went to DeHaven's home on Tompkins Avenue and asked if they could search the property. DeHaven reportedly consented and then confessed to stabbing Rowan to death and hiding her body in his basement. 

Police in fact found Rowan's body wrapped in a blanket in the basement. During their search they also found the murder weapon, a knife. 

The Summit County Coroner had scheduled an autopsy for Monday and DeHaven's been booked in Summit County Jail on aggravated murder charges. 

The Summit County Sheriff's Office has announced felony charges against 28-year-old Dean Davis of Green who is alleged to have sexually assaulted a 4-year-old boy in the boy's mother's home that was caught on a home surveillance camera.

Inspector Bill Holland added in a press release Tuesday that the boy's mother, 31-year-old Samantha Ward, who has three other children, was aware of the incident and didn't report it.

Green has been booked on Gross Sexual Imposition and other charges, while Ward, who is alleged to have been taking medications prescribed to her other children, is charged with endangering children and theft of drugs.

Additional charges are pending further investigation, according to Holland.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office was contacted in regards to an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the city of Green. An investigation was initiated by the Sheriff’s Detective Bureau. It was reported that a household surveillance camera captured the assault on video. The alleged victim of the sexual assault was a 4 year old male. The child’s mother was supposedly aware of the incident, but failed to report it. The above victim and three other children were interviewed and subsequently turned over to Summit County Children’s Services.

The investigation revealed that the individual depicted in the video was Dean A. Davis. Davis was arrested and charged with Gross Sexual Imposition (F-3), Sexual Imposition (M-3), and Endangering Children (M-1). Further charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. Davis, age 28 of Green, was transported to the Summit County Jail.

Through the investigation, it was determined that the mother of the four children, Samantha Ward, created a substantial risk to the health and safety of her children. It was also believed that she was consuming medication that belonged to her children. Samantha L. Ward, age 31 of Green, was arrested and charged with Endangering Children (M-1) and Theft of Drugs (F-5). Additional charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. She was transported to the Summit County Jail. Follow-up questions should be directed to Inspector Bill Holland at 330-620-9738.

Back in April of this year, the Summit County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the attempted suicide of an inmate at the Summit County Jail. 

During the investigation, three deputies who were on duty at the time of the incident in question, were questioned. It was later uncovered that the deputies provided false information to medical staff and investigators. 

In a press release on Tuesday, July 17th, Inspector Bill Holland with the Sheriff's Office said that former deputies Teresa M. Stark, Debra Weiland, and Alycia L. Hawkins have been charged with Falsification, a first degree misdemeanor, and Obstructing Official Business, a second degree misdemeanor. Inspector Holland added that two of the deputies quit the department and the third was removed from duty while she was still in her probationary period. 

No further information regarding the secifics of the April incident at the Jail were provided. 

An Akron man is under arrest, facing multiple felony charges, after Akron Police say he held his girlfriend against her will and threatened her life. 

According to the APD report, police were called to the home at 26 West Dalton Avenue around 9 a.m. Tuesday. As officers pulled up to the home, they noticed 56-year-old Leon J. Newsome on the porch and a woman running from the home. That's when Newsome reportedly ran back into the home and locked the door. 

The female, who is believed to be Newsome's girlfriend, told Police that Newsome had held her against her will all night, that he had a gun and that he held the gun to her head and pulled the trigger... For some reason, Police say, the gun did not fire, sparing the woman's life. 

S.W.A.T. was called to the home and after a short time Newsome surrendured without further incident. He's being held in Summit County Jail on charges of felonious assault, aggravated menacing, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, assault, having weapons while under disability, and menacing.

Back on September 1st, 2017, Summit County Jail inmate Anthony L. Jones was involved in an altercation with two Sheriff's deputies at the jail. The following day, Jones died in the jail's hospital. 

Shortly after Jones' death, the Summit County Sheriff Steve Barry requested an investigation into the incident, and requested that Stark County investigators conduct the investigation, to avoid any conflict of interest. 

On Monday, the Summit County Sheriff's Office released the following statement regarding that investigation: 

In September of 2017, Summit County Sheriff Steve Barry requested the Stark County Sheriff’s
Office to investigate the death of Mr. Anthony L. Jones due to Mr. Jones’ death occurring while
Mr. Jones was incarcerated at the Summit County Jail. Summit County Medical Examiner, Dr.
Lisa Kohler, performed an autopsy on the deceased and the results of the autopsy were signed
and released on February 22, 2018. According to this documentation the cause of death was
Hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy due to cardiac arrest of uncertain etiology. The manner of
death is listed as UNDETERMINED: Cardiac arrest during active restraint while in custody.
It should be noted how the autopsy does also reflect the following Accessory diagnosis: Clinical
history of schizophrenia, pulmonary emphysema, and Focal moderate atherosclerotic
cardiovascular disease. Further, Mr. Jones had been admitted to Akron General Hospital in 2016
for acute encephalopathy, respiratory failure, rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure, substance abuse
disorder, and hypokalemia. The investigation was completed by the Stark County Sheriff’s
Office and then turned over to the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office for review. We have now
received correspondence from the Stark County Prosecuting Attorney, Mr. John D. Ferrero, that,
his office has reviewed the investigation into the death of Mr. Anthony Jones. Prosecutor Ferrero
explains how documents from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office investigation, were all reviewed,
as well as the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office documents, including the Medical
Examiner’s Report of Autopsy. The Prosecutor ends his communication with, “Based upon our
review of the case, probable cause does not exist for charging criminal liability with respect to
Mr. Jones’ death. Accordingly, we do not believe this matter merits presentation to the Summit
County Grand Jury.” From everything submitted, it has been concluded Mr. Jones suffered
cardiac arrest due to unknown medical origin during this tragic and unfortunate incident.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and the
Stark County Prosecutor’s Office for their professional assistance and thorough investigation and
offers its true condolences to Mr. Jones’ family.

A crash in Akron ended with an arrest for murder, according to Akron Police. 

On Saturday morning, just after 7 a.m., Police and EMS responded to a single car crash into an abandoned building at 781 Grant Street. When they arrived, they found the 2007 Pontiac G6 had plowed into the side of the Grant Street building. The driver, 27-year-old Jelicia M. Wilder, was outside the vehicle, while her passenger, a 27-year-old male, was still in the car and had a stab wound to the neck. 

The male was immediately transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital where he passed away shortly afterwords. 

Wilder later told Akron Police investigators that she and the victim were fighting and she stabbed him in the neck. She was driving him to the hospital, traveling north on Grant trying to turn right onto East South Street, when she lost control of her car and crashed into the building. She was arrested and is charged with demostic violence charges and murder. She's been booked into the Summit County Jail. 

The victim has not yet been identified, pending an autopsy from the Summit County Medical Examiner and family notification. 

The family of Anthony Jones, 36, along with the Akron Organizing Collaborative community group, is planning a vigil Friday night outside of the Summit County Jail. 

Jones, who was an inmate in the jail, died on September 2nd after an altercation with two Summit County Sheriff's Deputies inside the jail. And investigation into his death is ongoing, but his family is calling for justice and accountability from the Sheriff's Office. The family says that deputies and jail employees need more racial sensitivity training and training in dealing with inmates who suffer from mental illness. 

Jones's family says that he suffered from mental illness. 

The vigil is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. 

Akron Police say it wasn't a one-time incident of child abuse that lead to the arrest of Melijah Isiah Lacy, 21, of Sheridan Avenue in Akron. 

Back on June 24th, Lacy's three-month-old child was taken to the doctor for a routine check up. The child was immediately taken to Akron Children's Hospital where staff found a brain bleed and multiple fractured ribs. They determined that the injuries were consistent with the baby being shaken on more than one occassion. 

A subsequent investigation lead police to the child's father, Lacy. He was arrested Tuesday morning on felony child endangering charges and was scheduled to be booked in Summit County Jail. 

The baby was placed in custody of Summit County Children's Services. 

Summit County Sheriff's Deputies have arrested a Coventry Township woman who allegedly abused her friend's baby while she was watching her. 

The incident occured back in May, when Audrey D. Hunt, 35, offered to watch her friend's 10-month-old child on May 2nd. The mother agreed, willfully allowing Hunt to take the baby to her Coventry Township home. Hours later, the mother called Hunt so that she could have her baby brought back home. Hunt refused, saying she would bring the baby back the next day. 

On May 3rd, the mother got a ride to Hunt's home. That's when she noticed injuries to the baby's face and arms. She took the baby to Akron Children's Hospital, where hospital staff determined that the baby's injuries were consistant with abuse. The Summit County Sheriff's Department Detectives began their investigation. 

On Tuesday, June 20, Hunt was arrested and charged with Felony Interference with Custody, Misdemeanor Child Endangering, and Misdemeanor Assault. She's currently being held in Summit County Jail. 

The parents of a two-year-old who accidentally overdosed on a synthetic opiate back have been arrested, according to Akron Police.

On March 7th, around 1 a.m., 27-year-old Randy Boggs found the toddler unresponsive in the home and called 911. He and 21-year-old Catelynn Smiley of Akron are charged with felony child endangering. They've been booked in Summit County Jail.

Child Endangering/Unintentional Overdose:

Detectives arrested the parents of the 2 year old that overdosed on a synthetic opiate around 1:00am on March 7, 2017. The 2 year old male was found unresponsive by the father at his residence in the 500 block of Brittain Road. Detectives charged Randy Boggs II, 27 and Catelynn Smiley, 21, both of Brittain Road, with felony child endangering. They were booked into the Summit County Jail.

Summit County Sheriff's Detectives respoded to a home in Coventry Township last month after they received information of children being sexually abused.

Detectives and Summit County Children's Services found 9 kids living in the home in "deplorable" conditions. They've since been removed from that home and an investigation found that 18-year-old Cody Haupt was abusing three of the young children, including a 5-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and an 8-year-old boy.

According to the Sheriff's Office report, Haupt is the half-brother of the victims. He has been arrested, charged with three felony counts of rape and more charges are pending. He's in Summit County Jail.

A Grafton man is under arrested after claims he exposed himself to kids, recorded a simulated sex act, and made offensive gestures to kids attending a field trip to a YMCA camp over the summer. 

The incident in question happened back in September, 2016, at Camp Y-Noah in Green. Just on January 25th of this year, Summit County Sheriff's Office received information from the Principal of Midview East Intermediate School that Scott J. Wuensch, 40, was the chaperone who allegedly committed the aforementioned crimes. 

Wuensch was arrested January 30, 2017, after a investigation. On Monday, he was charged in Barberton Municipal Court with Public Indecency, Disseminating Matter Harmful to Juveniles, and Disorderly Conduct, all misdemeanors. Wuensch is booked in Summit County Jail. 

Akron Police have charged 47-year-old Derrick Williams with murder in connection to his mother's death. 

Last Thursday police were called to the home of 78-year-old Alaine Williams, where she was found unresponsive by her daugther. In the 911 call, her daughter said it was her brother Derrick that killed their mother. An investigation and autopsy revealed that Alaine died of blunt-force trauma to the head. 

Police caught up with Derrick Williams over the weekend, reportedly at the home in Akron. He has been booked in Summit County Jail. 

David Hillis,22, will spend a year in Summit County Jail for the shooting death of Marcus Glover after a robbery attempt back in August of 2015.

Court documents show Hillis fired shots at Glover and his accomplice, Terry Tart, as they ran from his home on Hilbish Avenue after an attempted robbery last year. Tart, was sentenced to 9 years in prison for his involvement. Hillis was facing 11 years in prison, but charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter and a plea deal tossed out the gun specification which would have held with it a mandatory 3 years in prison. He plead guilty to the charge of voluntary manslaughter back in August.

Visiting Judge Richard Reinbold sentenced Hillis to six years on Wednesday, but suspended five years of the sentence and ordered that he serve one year in the Summit County Jail rather than prison. Glover's family is upset about the sentence and say Hillis was given preferential treatment because of family "connections." 

Akron Police have arrested 24-year-old Nathan Craig Huff and are charging him with murder in the stabbing death of his grandmother.

According to the Akron Police report, Huff called 911 last Friday night shortly after 10 o'clock, to report that he went to his 70-year-old Lena Cline's home and found his grandmother dead on the living room floor.

After investigating and interviewing Huff, police arrested him on charges of murder. He's been booked into Summit County Jail.
