Teamsters from across the U.S. are pledging big bucks to an Akron-based nonprofit that is dedicated to awareness surrounding the heroin epidemic that is plaguing Northeast Ohio and the entire country.

Travis Bornstein, along with two others, started the Breaking Barriers nonprofit after the overdose death of Bornstein's 24-year-old son Tyler in 2014. Bornstein, who is the head of the Teamsters Local 24 in Akron, spoke at a national Teamsters convention in Las Vegas on Wednesday. He spoke about his son and the growing heroin problem. After his speech, Bornstein says the donations began pouring in to the amount of $1.4 million. Going into the event, the fund at Breaking Barriers didn't exceed $10,000, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

In 2014, Bornstein's son Tyler's body was found in a vacant lot in Coventry Township, where he fatally overdosed on heroin. During his speech to the Teamsters, Bornstein said his goal is to build a treatment facility on that lot.

A New Look At Promotions For Akron Fire

Akron Fire will do away with the exam it once required for promotions throughout its departments and will lean on education, training, and seniority for advancement.

On Tuesday, Mayor Dan Horrigan, along with Deputy Mayor for Labor Relations Randy Briggs and Local 330 Lieutenant Russ Brode, announced the result of negotiations between the unions and the city; most of the recommended changes came from the Blue Ribbon Task Force, commissioned by the Mayor himself.

Ten years of legal battles over the now obsolete promotional tests have prevented the department from giving its city employees raises. The new education-based procedure provides a "roadmap for firefighters coming in now, to show how they can become officers in this department," says Deputy Mayor for Labor Relations Randy Briggs.

Mayor Dan Horrigan said, during the press conference outside Memorial Station 4 on E. Thornton St., "It's an historical day. I think we've reached an unprecidented partnership with our local unions." He went on to say of the new process, "The true focus is on talent development."

Along with Atlanta, Arlington, Virginia and Alexandria, Virginia, Akron is only the fourth city in the U.S. currently implementing this education and training-based promotion system. That makes them part of the "A-Team" as Deputy Mayor Briggs pointed out at the press conference outside Station 4 on E. Thornton St. downtown.

New Evidence In Amy Mihaljevic Case

The Cleveland FBI, along with Bay Village Police, and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty held a press conference today in regard to new evidence in the nearly 27-year-old case of Amy Mihaljevic.

During Thursday's press conference they said a curtain, that was initially found near where Amy's body was found in Ashland County, is what Amy's body was wrapped in and came from the location where she was murdered. Investigators made the connection through hair from the Mihaljevic family dog that was found on the curtain. The curtain was described as homemade, turned into a curtain from a blanket.

"This lead will solve the case. If you connect this curtain to a location, they will finish the job," McGinty said at the press conference.

Amy went missing from her Bay Village home on October 27, 1989. Her body was found in a ditch along a road in Ashland County in February of 1990.

It's the first major sports championship the Northeast Ohio area has seen in 52 years, so naturally thousands and thousands of fans flocked to the IX Center and Cleveland Hopkins Airport in Cleveland to witness LeBron James and the rest of the World Champion Cleveland Cavaliers bring it home.

The festivities at the IX Center parking lot kicked off early, with the team expected to touchdown aroun 12:30 p.m. The mood was vibrant and the crowd was excited, hoping to get within eyeshot of the Larry O'Brien Trophy. The energy level was maintained by the Cavaliers Dance Team, the Scream Team, the Q-Stix, and in-game announcer Ahmaad Crump, who was the emcee for the event. Despite the heat (it was about 86 degrees on the first day of Summer), the crowd was hyped and stuck it out throughout the day.

Then, the Champs landed... And the crowd erupted with collective chants of "Let's Go Cavs!" and "MVP", for Akron's own LeBron James.

As the mobile staircase rolled up to the plane and the door opened, one-by-one the Cavaliers players made their way to flat ground, back in The Land.

In true fairytale fashion, LeBron was the last player to exit the plane, holding the Larry O'Brien Trophy high above his head, for every Cavs fan to witness. While donning an "Ultimate Warrior" T-shirt, no doubt a jab at the now second-best team in the country, the Golden State Warriors, LeBron swelled with pride as he was finally able to keep his promise and bring his hometown a World Championship.

Ohio Prison System Enters New Dairy Deal

It does a body good, despite whether that body is incarcerated or not.

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has entered a contract with four Ohio dairy farms, worth $2.6 million, to provide roughly 1.3 million gallons of milk for inmates per year.

Prior to the deal, the Ohio prison system had their own farms that were maintained day-to-day by prisoners, but sold roughly 1,000 cows and closed those farms. The announcement was unexpected as a $9 million plan to improve prison farms was in its final stages.

A spokesman for the prison system in Ohio says the farms were closed due to security concerns and because the practice of training and preparing inmates for farming jobs is outdated.

Akron Police are asking the public's help in identifying an indecent exposure suspect they say grabbed a woman after exposing himself to her.
