Ray Horner Podcast - 2/1/2019

:17 - With Sunday being the Super Bowl, Friday’s show had plenty of football themes. Ray and Tony talked about the top ten football movies of all time, with some honorable mentions just off the list.

7:26 - But not everything about football was positive. Malone University is dropping intercollegiate football as a cost-cutting measure, as the college has a $2.5 million structural deficit to contend with. Charlie Grimes, athletic director at Malone, joined the show to discuss the decision to cease football operations.

13:37 - If you’re of a certain age, you may remember a nightclub in the Akron area called Red’s. It may have closed in 1988, but its legacy lives on through owner Arnie Shapiro, who turned 95 this week.

17:29 - Temperatures have been rather frigid this week, with the highs being in negative digits the middle of the week. Ren Camacho, the new president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport, called in to discuss how the airport deals with such bone-chilling conditions.

24:04 - As we wrap up this podcast and the week, the Akron Beacon Journal’s Bob Dyer and former NFL player Jay Brophy stopped by studio for some old Super Bowl memories from yesteryear. Brophy played in Super Bowl XIX, where his Miami Dolphins got trounced by the San Francisco 49ers.

:17 - Is Black Friday shopping not what it used to be? Are you shopping for yourself or others? Are you looking forward to Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday? WEWS News 5 consumer reporter Jonathan Walsh has you covered, from the big box stores to online shopping to gift cards.

11:55 - Rick McQueen will be stepping down as president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport at the end of the year, but he’ll have a busy final month. He took a few minutes of his time to talk with Ray about egress in and out of the airport.

16:02 - If you are doing some shopping and are an Indians fan, the team has some new threads for the 2019 season. Bob DiBiasio from the Tribe talked about the slight change in their uniforms.

24:09 - Having a few too many adult beverages Thanksgiving Eve? Arrive Alive has you covered. Summit County prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh called in to promote Arrive Alive, which is a program that sends a cab and takes one home for free (up to $65) around Summit County beginning at 6 PM.

30:14 - In her final in-studio appearance until April, our master gardener Jeanne Poremski stopped by to chat about indoor plants, especially ones used as gifts like the Christmas cacti.

38:13 - Dr. Joe Congeni from Akron Children’s Hospital checks in to discuss some gruesome injuries in sports. Redskins QB Alex Smith went down with a brutal injury 33 years to the day Joe Theismann had a very similar break.

43:17 - And finally, our movie guy and WQMX morning man Scott Wynn talked with Tony about what’s at the theaters this weekend. The big movies that will top the box office are Creed II and the animated Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Akron-Canton Airport Offers More Full-Experience Tours to Moms GREEN, Ohio – An excited group of local moms joined Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) during the first-of-its-kind full-experience airport tour focused on traveling with kids. The response was so positive that CAK will offer additional tours to the community to reach more families who might have concerns about flying with their little ones. The next group of CAK Mom’s Tours will be held at the airport on Tuesday, June 13, with two options available. The morning tour will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. and the afternoon tour, 5:30-7 p.m.

“We enjoyed seeing how well-received our first Mom’s Tour was in the community,” said Rick McQueen, President and CEO of Akron-Canton Airport. “And, we look forward to continuing to offer such a great opportunity and resource to parents and families to help prepare them and make their travel experience as enjoyable as possible.”

The CAK Moms Tour is designed to help alleviate anxiety parents have while traveling with little ones. CAK understands that the travel experience with kids can feel intimidating and the team wants to do everything possible to make the journey easy-breezy for each family that chooses CAK for their travel adventures.

During the tour, moms will park, ride the shuttle bus to the airport, walk through the airline check-in process with their little ones, pass through security screening with baby gear, and navigate through the airport to their gates. Representatives from Spirit Airlines and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will cover common questions, such as what baby gear travels free, what kid-friendly snack items can be taken through TSA, and more. CAK plans to host these tours twice a year, with room to grow based on demand. The two upcoming tours are open to the public, and moms can sign up online at http://www.akroncantonairport.com/flying-with-kids/tour-sign-up. Space is limited and participation will be confirmed on a first come, first served basis. Parents are encouraged to ask questions and share their family-friendly ideas with the airport.

A Flying with Children resource guide that includes helpful tips about traveling with kids, including airlinespecific requirements for carry-on items, strollers, car seats and ticket purchases, as well as an outline of TSA rules for child nutrition and screening procedures is available on akroncantonairport.com.

CAK Unveils New Ticket Improvements

Akron-Canton Airport celebrates another milestone today -- the official opening of the newly-renovated ticket wing after more than $2.7 million dollars in renovations.

The work widens the area passengers have where the waiting lines are set up, including improvements to the outdoor entry way. Work continues on improvements to the parking lots.

- - -

(CAK) Keep calm and smile on because the AkronCanton Airport's (CAK) newly renovated, 2.7 million dollar ticket wing upgrade is now complete.

Designed by SoL Harris/Day Architects, of North Canton, Ohio, the new interior added more than 1,800 square feet of circulation space, LED lighting and huge windows. The exterior of the ticket wing features a dramatic glass canopy.

"We wanted to create an even better airport experience for our customers with our ticket wing renovation,' said Rick McQueen, president and CEO. "More natural light and more circulation space make the checkin experience feel even better. We are delighted, too, that this project finished up prior to the RNC, the Bridgestone Invitational and the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions. Visitors will have a great first impression of our region because of these improvements."

This project was funded by revenue from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport improvement program, passenger facility charges (PFC), and airport operating revenue. Additionally, it is one of the final projects of the airport's CAK 2018 Capital Improvement Plan introduced in 2008.

The ticket wing isn't the only thing undergoing a major facelift. Improvements and a reconfiguration of the airport's main campus parking lots – shortterm, longterm A, longterm B and the cell phone waiting lot are still underway.

Covered parking, new entrance and exit plazas and a commercial vehicle lane are features of the upgraded parking lots.
