20:57 - All-American Soap Box Derby president Mark Gerberich came on late in the show to discuss the three newest members of the derby hall of fame.

An Akron Police Motorcycle Officer was seriously injured when he was pinned underneath the van of a suspected drunk driver after a crash Saturday night. 

According to the APD report, the officer was on his motorcycle and was attempting to stop another vehicle at the intersection of South Portage Path and Bloomfield Avenue, when Corrie Sharpe, 65, who was driving her minivan eastbound on Bloomfield, failed to yield to the officer. She collided with the officer's motorcycle, sending him off the bike and pinning him underneath her van. 

The officer was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital with serious injuries. Other officers responding to the scene conducted a field sobriety test and gave Sharpe a breathalyzer, both of which she reportedly failed. The report states that her blood alcohol content registered at .125; the legal limit in Ohio is .08. Sharpe was arrested and charged with OVI, Aggravated Vehicular Assault, and Child Endangering, as her 11-year-old granddaughter was reportedly in the back seat of her van. 

As of Sunday morning, the officer involved in the accident was still listed in serious condition. 

Late Wednesday night Akron Police responded to a home in the 200 block of Grand Avenue to a call about a shooting in the basement of that home. 

When officers arrived, they found two teenagers, one 15, the other 14-years-old, with gunshot wounds, reportedly to the head. Both teens were transported to Akron General Hospital. Initial reports stated that both teens had died at the hospital. 

On Thursday morning, the Akron Police Department released a statement correcting the information from Wednesday night, saying that the 15-year-old teen was pronounced dead, but despite their report, the other teen was listed in critical condition and is actually alive. 

The APD maintains that their initial report was accurate in that the 15-year-old accidentally shot the younger teen and then turned the gun on himself. The Summit County Medical Examiner has since identified the victim.

The Akron Police Department takes pride in only furnishing accurate information. Last night we received inaccurate information from multiple reliable sources that both teens had died at the hospital. The department would like to apologize to the victims’ families. The department feels terrible for the families of the victims of this tragic event and our thoughts are with them during this difficult times.

Shortly after 7:00pm this evening, officers responded to a shooting in the 200 block of Grand Avenue. Officers arrived and located two teenage males, 14 and 15 years old, with gunshot wounds to their heads. The victims were transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General where the 15 year old was pronounced dead and the 14 year old is listed in critical condition.

Initial reports state the juveniles were in the basement of the house on Grand Avenue. The 15 year old male pulled out a handgun and accidentally fired a shot, striking the 14 year old male in the head. The 15 year old male then turned the gun on himself.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.

Early Saturday afternoon, Akron Police were called to the 900 block of Baughman Street on a report of a fight between two women, reportedly over a man.

According to the police report, the man that the two women were arguing over, identified as 24-year-old Shaquille L. Jones of Nesbitt Avenue (pictured), pulled a gun, pointed it at one of the females, and threatened to shoot her. That female victim fled the scene, followed shortly after by the second female.

Later that night, around 10:30, police say Jones was identified as the suspect who shot an 18-year-old man in the head and chest on Orrin Street. That victim was taken to Akron General, his status is unknown. Meanwhile, a warrant has been issued for Jones.

A little more than two-and-a-half years in the making, the brand new Cleveland Akron General Emergency Department was unveiled to local leaders and the media on Wednesday. During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Akron General President Dr. Brian Harte reinforced the hospital system's commitment to the Akron area.

Cleveland Clinic Akron General’s new $49.3 million emergency department opens to patients at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, more than tripling the size of its current emergency department and enhancing patient experience.

“This new emergency department is a very visible example of Cleveland Clinic Akron General’s commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of the residents of Akron and the surrounding communities,” said Brian Harte, M.D., president of Akron General. “As a regional Level I Trauma Center, we serve patients with critical injuries and this investment will help our caregivers provide safe, high-quality care in the most efficient manner possible.”

The new emergency department is designed to expedite the process from admittance through discharge and includes:

• Sixty total treatment rooms, including:
  • Two trauma rooms that double the size of trauma care capacity
  • Two resuscitation rooms
  • Six rooms for minor injuries and illnesses
  • Five behavioral health rooms
• A rooftop helipad
• An imaging department, including a CT scanner and two radiographic rooms
• A designated area for Akron General’s PATH Center (Providing Access to Healing) through which Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners provide quality, trauma-informed, compassionate care to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse and neglect
• A designated area for quarantining and treating highly contagious patients

The emergency department is located on the first floor of a new 67,000-square-foot building and a new second-floor bridge connects it to the surgery center at the main hospital in downtown Akron. Administrative offices are located on the second floor along with a 19-bed observation unit that will be used for treatment and evaluation while determining whether a patient needs to be admitted to the hospital.

The building follows environmentally friendly design practices, continuing Cleveland Clinic’s energy conservation and sustainability efforts, including:

•Water efficiency: Low-flow toilets and sinks use about 40 percent less water than a baseline system.

•Energy efficiency: 100 percent LED lighting and building automation system optimizes the usage of conditioned air.

•Energy conservation: Indoor lights utilize daylight when available.

•Landfill diversion: Reduced waste, improved quality and increased safety due to more construction materials being fabricated offsite. 90 percent of construction debris was reclaimed and repurposed for other usable products.

•Indoor air quality: Use of low-VOC paints, adhesives, furnishing and materials to reduce indoor air pollution.

A reception was held for community and health system leaders this morning, and a special open house will be held for caregivers this afternoon. A community open house will be held on Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The building was designed by Hasenstab Architects and constructed by The Ruhlin Company.

We have an update on the shooting in Akron's West Hill neighborhood this morning.

According to the report, just before 5 this morning Akron Police responded to the 300 block of Gold Street near Nickel, on a call about a shooting.

There were two male victims that were shot; one in the head, the other in the arm. The first victim is at Akron General in Critical Condition, while the second was taken to Akron City Hospital and is in serious condition. A short time later, Akron Police arrested Hedy Moss, 49, who fled the scene after the shooting, and charged her with two counts felonious assault.

She's in Summit County Jail.

The victims' names have not been released, pending the notification of their families. 

There's a new top doc at Akron General. The Cleveland Clinic, which operates the Akron hospital, named Brian Harte, M.D. to take over as the new president starting September 26th. Harte should be no stranger to the area. He's run Cleveland Clinic's Hillcrest Hospital and South Pointe Hospital recently. Acting president Janice Murphy, R.N. returns to her position as Chief Operating Officer for the Clinic's Regional Operations.

Dr. Harte has been with Cleveland Clinic since 2004, serving in numerous leadership roles. For the past three years, he has served as president of Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital, a 500-bed flagship hospital in the Cleveland Clinic health system. Prior to Hillcrest, Dr. Harte was the president of Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital.

Dr. Harte has been instrumental in leading Hillcrest Hospital through improvements in safety and quality, while establishing a patient-centered culture of care and clinical alignment. In addition, he has continued to build strong community collaboration and developed a leadership curriculum throughout the hospital. Under his leadership, Hillcrest Hospital achieved Magnet designation, one of just 400 in the country; accomplished re-accreditation by the Joint Commission; and received many other meaningful recognitions for its stroke, obstetrical, pediatric and cardiac care. The hospital has also been ranked in the top five in Northeast Ohio for two consecutive years by US News & World Report.

"I look forward to joining Cleveland Clinic Akron General and working together to continue the momentum in growing and supporting services and programs in the Akron community," Dr. Harte said. Dr. Harte is a practicing hospitalist and the former chairman of the Department of Hospital Medicine and the Medicine Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and was in private practice for five years prior to joining Cleveland Clinic in 2004. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He also currently serves as the President of the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Janice Murphy, R.N., who currently serves as the Acting President of Akron General will return to her role as Chief Operating Officer for Cleveland Clinic Regional Operations. Her dedication and continued leadership to Akron General and the Akron community is deeply appreciated.

An Akron communications pro best known for her time as communications director for former Akron mayor Don Plusquellic is opening up a new Akron office for a Cleveland-based crisis communications firm.

Stephanie York will lead the new Akron office for Hennes Communications.

After her time at Akron City Hall, where she was also assistant director of law, York has been communications director for Cleveland Clinic Akron General.
