On this Monday edition of The Jasen Sokol Show, Jasen talks with Kent State Associate Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication Jan Leach about the closing of the Youngstown Vindicator (00:17), Patrick DeHaan of GasBuddy.com about the Ohio gas tax (12:26) and Jeff Schudel of the News-Herald and Morning Journal about the Cavs and NBA free agency (18: 47).
Gas prices in Akron are down nearly 12 cents over the past week, averaging out at $2.60 per gallon of regular unleaded, as of Sunday night. That's 9 cents less than the Cleveland area, and 8 cents below the statewide average.
Patrick DeHaan with GasBuddy.com says that the Great Lakes states are reaping the most benefits of the recent drop in oil prices as the area has seen the largest drop in the price at the pump.

Gasoline prices in Akron have fallen 11.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.60/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 372 stations in Akron. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.6 cents per gallon versus last week to $2.88/g, according to GasBuddy.
Average gasoline prices on October 15 in Akron have ranged widely over the last five years:
$2.32/g in 2017, $2.15/g in 2016, $2.37/g in 2015, $3.10/g in 2014 and $3.34/g in 2013.
Including the change locally during the past week, prices yesterday were 28.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago and are 14.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has increased 2.6 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 42.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.
Areas near Akron and their current gas price climate:
Cleveland- $2.69/g, down 12.0 cents per gallon from last week's $2.81/g.
Pittsburgh- $3.13/g, down 1 cent per gallon from last week's $3.14/g.
Ohio- $2.68/g, down 11.0 cents per gallon from last week's $2.79/g.
"The last week has seen a flurry of events to keep an eye on, while the recent drop in oil prices materialized at pumps across the country, but no where have the declines been as large as Great Lakes states," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Great Lakes states have wreaked havoc on the national average, sending it down considerably as stations there have passed along the recent drop in oil prices relatively quickly. However, while Great Lakes motorists were seeing lower prices, average prices along the West Coast, mainly in Washington and Oregon, have started to jump after a natural gas pipeline explosion last week pushed some refineries to close. In addition, events in Saudi Arabia bear monitoring as the West claims the Kingdom is behind the disappearance of a Washington Post journalist and could rile tensions between the world's largest oil consumer and one of the world's largest oil producers. I believe gas prices in most areas East of the Rockies will drift lower, but keep an eye out on these new developments. I don't know that I've ever seen autumn so rife with possible volatility at the pump as we're seeing now."

Pittsburgh- $3.14/g, up 2.9 cents per gallon from last week's $3.11/g.
Ohio- $2.81/g, up 1.8 cents per gallon from last week's $2.79/g.
"The national average gas price has broken out of a well-established rut, climbing above $2.90 per gallon for the first time since mid-June on rising oil prices ahead of the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran and OPEC failing to pump enough oil to meet robust demand," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "We may see prices continue to lift ahead of the mid-terms, however completely unrelated to the elections, but due to constant threats from an improving economy: higher demand and lower supply is tipping the balance of the oil market and pushing prices higher. We may even soon see $3 per gallon nationally, which would be the first time since October 2014, if oil prices continue to rise. I, along with motorists, will be eagerly awaiting any relief at the pump, but don't hold your breath- it may get worse before it gets better."

Harvey made landfall in Texas a a category 4 hurricane last Friday, August 25th; the largest storm system to make landfall in the U.S. in more than a decade. In the process, Harvey destroyed or otherwise damaged refineries in the Gulf of Mexico, near Houston.
Patrick DeHaan, with GasBuddy.com, says that is going to affect the price at the pump in Akron and prices across the U.S., due to the trickle-down effect.
"This is such large event and there are so many refineries in Houston; you're talking about the energy capital of the U.S.," DeHaan told the Ray Horner Morning show Tuesday. He added that Harvey has tipped the supply and demand scale, with demand now outweighing supply, due to the damage to those refineries in the Gulf. DeHaan says that because of the amount of production at those affected refineries that has been temporarily thrown offline, we are seeing increases in our area and across the U.S.
Below is the weekly release from GasBuddy.com detailing increases in Akron gas prices and including information on the impact Harvey will have:
(GasBuddy.com) Average retail gasoline prices in Akron have risen 14.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.32/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 372 gas outlets in Akron. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.36/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Including the change in gas prices in Akron during the past week, prices yesterday were 16.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 8.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 6.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 14.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.
According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on August 27 in Akron have ranged widely over the last five years:
$2.16/g in 2016, $2.53/g in 2015, $3.39/g in 2014, $3.54/g in 2013 and $3.75/g in 2012.
Areas near Akron and their current gas price climate:
Cleveland- $2.25/g, up 4.2 cents per gallon from last week's $2.21/g.
Pittsburgh- $2.60/g, flat from last week's $2.61/g.
Ohio- $2.30/g, up 7.4 cents per gallon from last week's $2.23/g.
"Gas prices are up in many places and motorists should be gearing up for more in the coming weeks, thanks to Hurricane Harvey inundating significant refineries along the Texas coastline, leading to closures and tilting the delicate balance of supply and demand," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. "Prices will likely rise nearly country wide heading into Labor Day, from rural towns in the Rockies to major cities in the Midwest and West Coast- nearly everyone will feel a bit of a pinch at the pump from Harvey. The impact could linger for several weeks or longer, depending on how long it takes Texas refiners to return to normal operations. In addition, the situation could worsen should more shutdowns or outages happen in the coming week as Harvey continues to drop feet of rain on already flooded Texas."
GasBuddy.com is out with their weekly survey of local stations in the Akron area. Their report shows that the price at the pump has fallen 8.2 cents since this time last week.
The current average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Akron is $2.16. Akron still well below the national average which is $2.33 per gallon.

(GasBuddy.com) Average retail gasoline prices in Akron have fallen 8.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.16/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 372 gas outlets in Akron. This compares with the national average that has fallen 4.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.33/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Including the change in gas prices in Akron during the past week, prices yesterday were 53.6 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 0.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has decreased 0.7 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 5.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.
According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on June 12 in Akron have ranged widely over the last five years:
$2.69/g in 2016, $2.85/g in 2015, $3.83/g in 2014, $3.85/g in 2013 and $3.71/g in 2012.
Areas near Akron and their current gas price climate:
Cleveland- $2.20/g, down 5.8 cents per gallon from last week's $2.26/g.
Pittsburgh- $2.61/g, down 2.9 cents per gallon from last week's $2.64/g.
Ohio- $2.22/g, down 9.8 cents per gallon from last week's $2.32/g.
"While the national average fell 5 cents per gallon in the last week, the bigger story is that 47 states saw average gas prices move lower in the last week, so this isn't just a here and there trend, it's almost everywhere," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.
"Oil prices remain near 6-month lows as fundamentals remain weak- supply remains high even in light of production cuts from OPEC while demand has been mild, not remarkable. Today's national average price for gasoline is the lowest for mid-June since 2005- not an easy record to attain. By all measures, gasoline prices this year have been exactly what most motorists seem to love- stable and cheap, two words that rarely have been synonymous with gas prices over the last decade. While many motorists are lured in to that false sense of security, smart motorists continue to shop around and find the best deal as the gas price spread between stations hits record levels, providing enough savings to pay for a snack or food item inside the station," DeHaan said.
Gas prices continue to fall as the new year moves forward. In the past week, gas prices have dropped more than a nickel in the past week in the Akron area, bringing the average price of a gallon of gas to $1.86, according to GasBuddy.com.
And it appears drivers will enjoy the benefits for months to come.
"By and large, at the end of the year, if you were to add up your receipts you'll find that you'll be spending about 10 to 12 cents less a gallon than you were last year." said Senior Petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan.
DeHaan said prices in 2016 are expected to stay under $3 per gallon -- with the exception of areas in the West Coast. Even with possible refinery issues and the switch to "winter-blend," DeHaan doesn't expect the average price of gas to reach above $3.
