State officials are warning drivers to beware of deer, as November is typically the month with the most deer-related crashings in Ohio.

Governor Mike DeWine urging safe practices on state roadways, including reducing distracted driving, especially at dusk and dawn, when deer are most active.

COLUMBUS – Drivers should always stay alert, but that is especially true during November, the leading month for deer-vehicle crashes in Ohio. Last November nearly 3,800 incidents occurred on the state’s roadways. 

Governor Mike DeWine, Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent Colonel Richard S. Fambro and Ohio Department of Insurance Director Jillian Froment urge drivers to avoid distractions and use safe driving techniques. 

“The most deer-vehicle crashes happen in November,” Governor Mike DeWine said. "And we want to remind Ohioans to drive safely, making sure to scan the road ahead for deer, especially at dawn and dusk.”     

“Motorists must always be vigilant and ready to react to any situation,” Colonel Fambro said. “If you see a deer in the roadway, slow down, but do not swerve. If you strike a deer, move to a safe place, turn your hazard lights on and report the accident.” 

Deer are most active at dawn and dusk. Drivers should scan the road and shoulders ahead, and use high beams when there is no oncoming traffic. Experts also recommend conducting an insurance review.  

“It is essential to remain attentive when driving and avoiding distractions in order to keep you and your family safe,” Froment said. “It is also important to complete an insurance review and make sure you have adequate insurance in the event of an accident.” 

The optional comprehensive coverage (also known as “other than collision” coverage) portion of an auto insurance policy often is used to pay for deer-vehicle damage repair. Collision or liability-only policies do not cover the damage. Be certain to photograph or video any damage to support an insurance claim. 

A total of 18,200 deer-related crashes occurred last year across the state. The top counties where incidents occurred were Stark (486), Trumbull (428), Richland (426), Hancock (424), Williams (413), Wood (412), Clermont (380), Defiance (369), Lorain (367), and Hamilton (366). Cuyahoga and Franklin Counties experienced 285 and 232 incidents, respectively.

A semi-trailer that was hauling a bulldozer along I-76 Eastbound hit the East Avenue Bridge before 6:30 Monday morning, causing major backups during the rush hour commute.

Akron, Ohio – On December 3, 2018 at approximately 6:21 AM, The Akron Post of The Ohio State Highway Patrol was requested by the Akron Police Department to assist with a two vehicle non injury crash that occurred at 06:21 AM and has closed Interstate 76 eastbound at the East Avenue Bridge.

The drivers’ names of the vehicles are unknown at this time. The vehicles involved are a semi-truck and trailer hauling a bulldozer which struck the East Avenue Bridge causing the bulldozer to come off of the trailer. A passenger car then struck the bulldozer

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Akron Police Department, Akron Fire Department and The Ohio Department of Transportation are on scene.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking for a missing Army National Guard Humvee that was stolen from the Stow armory Wednesday morning. 

On Wednesday afternoon, around 3:30, State Troopers noticed the chain link fence around the facility near where the vehicle was stored was cut. Then they realized the Hummer was missing. OSHP says the thief or thieves disabled the lock on the vehicle. 

The Humvee is marked with the numbers 174 and 1-145 on the bumper near the left tail light and HQ-51 near the right tail light. 

The Highway Patrol has not released any suspect information and they're asking anyone who may have any information to call their office at 216-265-1677. 

The suspect in a  dramatic police chase that tied up traffic on I-77 Thursday afternoon for more than an hour White Pond Drive and Brecksville Road has been charged with a laundry list of crimes including fleeing and eluding, drug posession and trafficking, and felonious assault on a police officer.

The Ohio State Patrol says Michael Hodge, 24, from Maple Heights, intentionally slammed into two highway patrol cruisers, and refused to pull over when they tried to stop him for multiple traffic violations. After a pursuit that crossed from the northbound lanes to the southbound lanes on I-77, Hodge's car was eventually stopped when he wound up in the median at 77 and Brecksville Road while trying to avoid spike strips. That's where he got out of his car and tried to run. Troopers, with the help of Bath Police, caught up to Hodge. 

The State Patrol says they found cocaine, heroin, and digital scales in Hodge's car, as well as ammunition along the side of the road which they allege he threw out of his car window

An Akron man is dead following an early morning crash on South Cleveland Massillon Road in Copley.

The State Highway Patrol reports the one-vehicle wreck happened just north of N. Sunnyfield Drive. 32-year old Darrelle Fisher of Pine Knolls Drive, Akron, was behind the wheel when the vehicle went off-road and hit a utility pole. Fisher was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene.

A passenger, 22-year old Shaquilla Thomas of Akron, was also injured in the accident and taken to Akron General with non-life threatening injuries. Troopers say she was only wearing a lap belt and didn't have the shoulder strap in use.

"Driver impairment" is suspected.

(OSHP) Copley Township- The Canton Post of the Highway Patrol is investigating a one vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 00:29 A.M. on South Cleveland Massillon Road just north of N. Sunnyfield Drive.

Darrelle Fischer, age 32, of 750 Pine Knolls Drive, Akron, Ohio was operating a 2002 Pontiac Montana northbound on South Cleveland Massillon Road. Fischer had a right front passenger who was identified as Shaquilla K. Thomas, age 22, of 746 Baird Street Akron, Ohio. The investigation determined Fischer's Pontiac traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a utility pole just north of N. Sunnyfield Drive. After impact, Fischer was ejected from the vehicle.

Fischer sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Summit County Coroner's Office. Fischer was subsequently transported to the Summit County Coroner's Office.

Thomas sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Akron General Hospital by Copley Fire Department. Thomas was only wearing a lap belt and wasn't utilizing the shoulder strap provided. The crash currently remains under investigation. Driver impairment is suspected in the crash.

One woman is dead, another injured in a fatal crash after one o'clock this morning after trying to get away from local police.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the crash fatality as Victoria Provitt, 22, of Massillon. Massillon police attempted a trafffic stop on the 2004 Ford Taurus Provitt was driving when she hit the gas. The vehicle slammed into two utility polies on North Avenue after she lost control and left the highway. A passenger, identified as Chine Marie Myricks, 22, also of Massillon, was not wearing a seatbelt and recieved non-life threatening injuries. She was transported to Affinity Hospital.

Police say alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash.

(OSHP) The Canton Post of the Highway Patrol is investigating a one vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 1:13 a.m.. at the intersection of North Avenue and 1st Street.

Massillon Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a 2004 Ford Taurus westbound on North Avenue near 10th Street. The vehicle accelerated on North Avenue, lost control and traveled off the right side of the roadway striking two utility poles.

The 2004 Ford Taurus was being operated by Victoria Charmaine Provitt, age 22, of 835 Lincoln Way E, Massillon, Ohio. Provitt sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Stark County Coroner's Office. Provitt was transported by Massillon Fire Department to Affinity Hospital. Provitt was wearing her seatbelt. Chine Marie Myricks, age 22, of 1268 Huron Road SE, Massillon, Ohio was a passenger in Provitt's vehicle. Myricks wasn't wearing a seatbelt and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Myricks was transported by Massillon Fire Department to Affinity Hospital. The crash currently remains under investigation.

Alcohol is suspected in the crash.

A serious accident along I-77 started with a high-speed chase between Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers and a suspect vehicle. 

According to the State Highway Patrol, a Trooper attempted to pull over a newer model Chevy Camaro around 1:45 a.m. Thursday along I-77 Northbound near the Akron-Canton Airport. The Trooper said when he turned on his lights, signalling the driver to pull over, the driver continued and sped up. That's when the pursuit started. 

The driver then attempted to exit the highway at the I-77 North exit to Massillon Road., lost control, and struck a light pole and a traffic box. The car was totaled and the driver was ejected from the vehicle. 

The car came to a rest on the west side of Massillon Road with the driver lying in the middle of the street alongside glass and other debris from the vehicle. 

He was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The ramp to Massillon Road was closed for several hours following the incident, but as of 10:35 a.m. has re-opened. 

ODOT video showing a minivan slowing down on I-77 southbound after it was shot on the highway early Wednesday morning near the Pro Football Hall of Fame is out; the grainy footage shows the vehicle coming to a stop, followed by traffic moving around it and a trooper's vehicle coming to the scene.

The woman driving the Kia minivan around 3:45 a.m. was struck in the hand and grazed in the head after multiple gunshots targeted her car. She pulled over then fled the scene and sought assistance in a nearby home. She was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, reported the Ohio State Highway Patrol. 

Police say it appeared the woman was targeted in the attack.

A Canton man has been arrested for allegedly murdering a missing man.

Canton Police executed a search warrant Friday night at 36 year-old Lance Levi Rankin's home on Worley Street after receiving a tip according to NewChannel 5. While searching the home, police found the missing man's body. His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.

Officers told the TV station they saw Rankin driving northbound on I-77 and attempted to stop him. The Ohio State Highway patrol came in to help by laying down road spikes. Rankin tried to swerve out of the way of the spikes and crashed into a parked police cruiser.

Police say Rankin suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital where he remains in custody.

The investigation is still ongoing.

One person is dead after a crash on State Route 18 in the Montrose-Ghent area Wednesday afternoon.

Copley police report the accident involving multiple cars happened on Route 18 and Creekrun Drive just before 4:00 Wednesday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said there were serious injuries involved accoring to NewsChannel 5.

The Summit County Medical Examiner confirmed the death after arriving on the scene about a half hour after the crash. 

Route 18 was closed in the area for the remainder of the afternoon.

A Friday night car crash left two people dead in Stark County.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a single car accident on State Route 619 east of McCallum Avenue in Lexington Township.

They say the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 619 at a high speed, when the driver lost control and drove off the road, striking a utility pole and several trees.

24 year-old Leland Wright and 28 year-old Aubrie Wright, both from Atwater, were ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. 

The accident is Stark County's fourth and fifth fatality this year. The crash remains under investigation.

Holiday travel means the battle against distracted driving goes into high gear. The Ohio Turnpike has gotten thousands to take a pledge to drive cell-phone free, and they could win a gas gift card.

Lt. William Wiertz with the Ohio State Highway Patrol says of all the distractions behind the wheel, using cell phones for talking or texting tops the list.

"Just my daily commute to work is about an hour drive, and I see it all the time, where people are not paying attention to what's in front of them," Lt. Wiertz tells WAKR.net, "They're either texting, or talking on their phone, or looking on their phone." Lt. Wiertz says he's seen others eat or read while driving.He says that it's not that the rate of distracted driving increases during the holidays, but the holiday traffic means it's more likely.

The Ohio Turnpike is also continues their long-standing program of offering free coffee to late-night drivers on this New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. 24-hour service plazas will provide one free cup of coffee to those looking for a caffeine jolt starting at 10:00 tonight and running through 7:00 Friday morning.

It's now official: nine dead from yesterday's jet crash on approach to Akron Fulton Airport.

Lt. Bill Haymaker of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said all of the victims were on the jet's manifest from Ft. Lauderdale to Dayton, then Akron. Officials said not all of the victims may be from Florida and notification of family is underway, with no names released.

The company is Pebb Enterprises, of Boca Raton, Florida. They posted the following on their website: Our hearts are broken this morning with the news of the tragic accident that took the lives of two principals and five employees of Pebb Enterprises. We are shocked and deeply saddened for the families, colleagues and friends of those who perished. Our first priority is to give our fullest support to the family members and loved ones of our co-workers. We ask for the media's understanding and cooperation at this time of unimaginable loss and mourning and are not responding to media requests at this time.

Haymaker confirmed that up to 12 families were impacted when the jet crashed into the four-unit apartment building on Mogadore Road; while no one was inside the building and adjacent apartments and homes were also damages. The American Red Cross provided relief for 11 families in the short-term.

The head of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) now has a full team in Akron.

NTSB vice-chairman Bella Dinn-Zarr - heading up the team here - told an afternoon press conference on Wednesday that the cockpit voice recorder has been recovered.

Dinn-Zarr said that a number of factors will be considered as they look into the crash...including flight controls, engines, weather, air traffic control and operations.

She called weather a "key factor" that will be investigated, along with surveillance video from a nearby business that shows the plane's approach.

Dinn-Zarr says they looked at the ground after seeing a surveillance video showing the aircraft flowing at a low altitude and banking left, finding evidence that the left wing hit the ground first.

There will be no determination issued by the NTSB while it is here the next four to five days.

Meanwhile, more residents in the immediate neighborhood are coming forward with video and testimony as the jet came down. In an interview with WAKR's Amani Abraham, Seth Yergin, 23, of Akron, said he heard the explosion and went outside to see what happened; there was already the apartment building "completely on fire...there was nothing I could do."

"It's kind of surreal," Yergin said. "It's pretty scary. It's strange to think the slightest thing, it could have been us."

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal car accident that happened in Stark County Saturday morning.

30-year old Danielle Johns of Tuscarawas was driving southbound on State Route 21 in Bethlehem Township around 1:40 AM. Officers say she lost control of her car and went off the roadway. She then struck a tree, a fence, and then another tree. Johns was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt while driving. It's not yet known if alcohol was involved in the crash.

An accident between a semi-truck and a bicycle in Ravenna sent a young person to the hospital Wednesday morning.

Ravenna police say they were called to the scene and saw the youth had been struck at the southwest corner of Main and Prospect St., and was on a bicycle at the time of the crash.

That young person was sent to University Hospitals/Portage Medical Center and later lifeflighted to another hospital.

There's no more information available, as required notifications are being made.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is helping investigate the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking into a Stark County crash involving a police cruiser, where two officers were injured.

It happened at just before 7:30 PM Friday night on State Route 44 in Marlboro Township.

The patrol says 32 year-old Marlboro Township police officer Christoper Kenneally was trying to make a traffic stop, when another car driving northbound on Route 44 went left of center.

Kenneally tried to avoid the car, and the patrol car ended up going off the right side of the road, striking a utility pole.

Kenneally and 29 year-old Marlboro Township police cadet Brian Stanley, a passenger in the cruiser, were transported to Aultman Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both officers were wearing seat belts. The crash is still under investigation.
