Police: Alcohol, Drugs Suspected in Deadly Crash

Investigators say that drugs and alcohol played a factor in a deadly two-car crash in Plain Township early Wednesday morning. 

According to the report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Michael D. Elsass, 26, of North Canton, drove through a red light at a high rate of speed around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday. He struck a Chrysler Town and Country, driven by Lawrence E. Dobbins. After the collision, Elsass's Chevy Malibu ran off the side of Cleveland Avenue and into a a group of trees along the roadway. 

When Highway Patrol and EMS arrived on the scene, Elsass was pronounced dead on the scene. Neith Dobbins nor his passenger, Lynda Dobbins, were injured in the accident. 

Highway Patrol investigators from the Canton Post believe that drugs and alcohol played a factor in the deadly crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Canton Man Struck, Killed By Car

UPDATE: Canton Police say it was a Chevy Impala that struck and killed Christian A. Thornton early Thursday morning and then drove off. They are unsure of the color of the vehicle, but say it was a later model, between 2000 and 2005. They're asking the public's help, along with the help of any body-shop workers in the area. They say the vehicle will likely have damage to the front left end, in the fog lamp area.

A 24-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while crossing a street in Canton early Thursday morning.

State troopers say Christian A. Thornton of Canton was crossing Market Avenue near 30th Street and was struck by a vehicle that left the scene of the crash shortly before 2 a.m. Thornton was taken to Mercy Medical Center where he later died.
