Michael Modjallal of Akron was killed while driving through western Pennsylvania when a deer went through his windshield.

The accident reportedly happened just after 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, along State Route 68 in Connoquenessing. 

 

WKYC.com is reporting that state police say another driver hit the deer, sending it airborne and then through the windshield of Modjallal's SUV.

His passenger, identified as his wife Lucia Modjallal, was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.

No one else was reportedly injured.

UPDATE: 100 Cars Involved in Rt. 8 Pile Up

UPDATE: A few more details from Tuesday's massive pile-up on Route 8 in Hudson, as officials now say that 25 people were transported to nearby hospitals with varying injuries. Still none that were life-threatening.

Now, the estimated number of cars involved are more like 100, opposed to the 60 initially reported by the City of Hudson.

Reports are that 60 of those nearly 100 vehicles had to be towed, and that 41 are a total loss.

Major pile-up along Route 8 North before Route 303 in Hudson started about 3 o'clock with a car that spun out, causing a chain reaction that involved more than 60 cars, according to a release from the city.

Roughly 12 people were taken to area hospitals with varying injuries, none too serious though. Emergency crews from more than 8 surrounding communities responded to the crash that left Route 8 North closed for nearly 4 hours.

The city is asking anyone whose car was towed to call the Hudson Police Department after 8 this morning for more information.

  • The crash occurred around 3 pm this afternoon. Initial determination is that the incident was weather related due to icy road surfaces.
  • More than 60 vehicles involved
  • Approximately 12 individuals transported to area hospitals (exact number and who went where are not available at this time)
  • None of the injuries appeared life-threatening.
  • We anticipate SR 8 northbound to be open within the next ½ hour.
  • We called in mutual aid from more than 8 surrounding jurisdictions to help with the incident.

Florida Crash Claims Lives Of Twinsburg Couple

A couple from Summit County was killed in a car accident in Florida.

Authorities and local media report three people, including two from Twinsburg died after a crash on Thursday in southwest Florida.

The Floida Highway Patrol says 67 year-old Diane Kiffner was traveling northbound on I-75 in Manatee County when a tow truck came into her lane and sideswiped her, causing her car to spin and ultimately overturn.

Two passengers, 68-year old Leonard May and 65 year-old Lana May both from Twinsburg, died at the scene according to investigators. Kiffner later died at  the hospital.

Authorities say the driver of the tow truck sustained only minor injuries.

Fatal Car Accident In Stark County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal car accident that happened in Stark County Saturday morning.

30-year old Danielle Johns of Tuscarawas was driving southbound on State Route 21 in Bethlehem Township around 1:40 AM. Officers say she lost control of her car and went off the roadway. She then struck a tree, a fence, and then another tree. Johns was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt while driving. It's not yet known if alcohol was involved in the crash.
