The Summit County Medical Examiner has identified the man at the center of a four-hours-long standoff outside a home on Thurmont Road Sunday in Akron. 

The report says Edward Earl Taylor, 54, died of a gunshot wound to the chest. They've further determined that the gunshot came from police and was not self-inflicted, as was suspected earlier. 

Police were initially called to the home on Thurmont on a report of a woman inside the home being sexually assaulted. When they first arrived, they were met with gunfire, believed to be from Taylor. Police returned fire and then SWAT was called as the suspect didn't come out of the home. After four hours, SWAT entered the home and found Taylor dead inside. 

No further details are available. 

A man suspected of attempting to rape a woman is dead after a standoff with Akron Police SWAT early Sunday morning. 

According to the report, at 4 a.m. Sunday, APD was called to 2070 Thurmont Rd. where a woman was being held at gunpoint and that the man who was holding her was trying to rape her. The victim managed to text a cousin who called 911. 

When police arrived, the suspect ran out of the house and fired shots at officers who then returned fire. The suspect then retreated back into the home. SWAT was called to the scene and tried to communicate with the suspect who was not repsonding. After about 4 hours of trying to contact the suspect, SWAT entered the home and found the suspect dead inside. 

The Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine whether or not the suspect died of gunshots from the police or a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His name has not yet been released. 

Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per department protocol, while the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. 

A standoff that lasted more than seven hours in Kent Sunday ended with a suspect shot by police. 

Kent Police responded to a call at about 2 p.m. regarding a suspicious person and suspected drug activity at an apartment complex located at 782 Silver Meadows Boulevard. Upon arrival, the police report states that Christopher D. Carter, 27, barricaded himself into the complex's basement laundry room and held a woman at knifepoint. 

Seven hours later, Kent Police SWAT rescued the female victim unharmed, but shot and killed Carter. 

Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation and will determine whether or not the shooting was justified. 

A 32-year-old man is dead after authorities say he barricaded himself inside a Coventry Township home Sunday night.

Summit County Sheriff's Inspector Bill Holland said Ryan Perkins of New Franklin was found with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a four-hour standoff.

"Our dispatch center received a call from a woman who said her 32-year-old husband was walking around outside in the yard of a Coventry Township residence with a rifle in his mouth," said Holland.

According to deputies, the man was reportedly making threats to harm himself and law enforcement inside the East State Street house.

Deputies were able to get in the home through a bedroom window to safely bring the mother and a child outside. Authorities tried to communicate with Perkins, but were unsuccessful and later found him on a couch with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
