This week, we're visiting Akron's "Makerspace", where tinkerers, inventors, and entrepreneurs can use both new and old technology to create, explore, and innovate. We'll also learn about a new invention to make the electrical grid "smarter", how we may one day use the whole surface our homes to generate electricity, and technology that can enable you to actually see around corners.

This week, a major Supreme Court decision about cell phones and privacy, NSA surveillance, controversy facial recognition technology, and gaming addiction as an actual mental illness.

  

UPDATE: A brand new Supreme Court ruling has just reversed much of the case law we discussed in this show. We'll have a follow up, with a whole new look at the issue in light of it, next week.

This week, we're focusing on privacy, including news about an upcoming iPhone security update, a conversation with an attorney about privacy rights as they relate to electronic devices, and observations from a well-known author about how privacy issues are being handled by governments in other parts of the world.

Akron Police Seek Bank Robber

Akron police on the lookout for a bank robber who hit the PNC Bank at 889 West Market Street yesterday morning. Employees said he was wearing a ski mast and sunglasses, and that it looked like he had a gun. Police say he got away with an undetermined amount of cash, and fled the scene in a bright red Dodge Charger.

Today is Elder Abuse Awareness day--the day set aside nationwide, to spotlight the effects of abuse on some of our most vulnerable community members.

Suicide once again made headlines last week, with the deaths of world famous designer Kate Spade, and Celebrity Chef, Anthony Bourdain. Their deaths two more, in what has become a growing trend here in the US, with the CDC reporting suicide up more than 25%, and up 36 percent in Ohio between 1999 and 2016.

So, WAKR Morning News Anchor, Jeanne Destro, reached out to Summit County Health Commissioner, Donna Skoda, to talk about about what causes suicide, and how we as individuals--and as a community--can help prevent it.
