:17 - Former Akron mayor Don Plusquellic called into the show today to make a major announcement. He mentioned several weeks back that he was considering a run for mayor as an independent. His decision is…..not to run. “The Don” mentions his thought process, he stuck up for Mayor Dan Horrigan, and he blasted city council on multiple occasions.

22:22 - Senator Sherrod Brown called into the program. Some of the topics he and Ray touched on were Democrat tax plans in the senate, full legalization of gambling in Ohio, and the controversy over Medicare and rising drug costs.

28:40 - Hello, friends. The Masters is upon us. Some of those golfers will be a part of the Bridgestone Senior Players at Firestone Country Club, which is just three months away. Executive director Don Padgett talked about both the events in Augusta and in Akron.

Well, today was the deadline to file is today and his decision is….he won’t be running…..in the democrat primary. However, this does not mean he won’t rule out running as an independent down the road.

21:14 - A school district in Massachusetts is looking to outlaw the game of tag during recess. The panel delved into the topic, with the consensus that outlawing games such as tag and musical chairs hurts more than it helps in the long-run.

35:47 - Speaking of mayors and the city of Akron, the chief of staff, James Hardy, called in to update listeners on how they have responded to the cyber attack from last week.

:17 - Late Tuesday morning, a rumor floated around the Akron area about Don Plusquellic throwing his hat in the ring for mayor. If you recall, Plusquellic was mayor of Akron from 1987 till May 2015. If the reports are true, would be be a real threat to current mayor Dan Horrigan?

2017 marks the twentieth anniversary of Canal Park and the Akron baseball franchise. A major figure in getting the baseball team into downtown Akron was former mayor Don Plusquellic.

It has been two full years since Plusquellic stepped down as mayor, and he gave an update on his life on the Ray Horner Morning Show. Plusquellic talked about the impact Canal Park has had on downtown development, which includes the housing, the pubs and restaurants, and Lock 3 Park.

Looking back after two years away, Plusquellic is proud all he and his administration accomplished. He was glad to have kept the corruption out of the office, and believes he did all he could to bring jobs back to Akron, especially in the rubber industry. He also shared his thoughts on the Kenmore-Garfield merger.

The passing of county executive Russ Pry has shaken up a lot of people, both citizens and politicians alike. But his impact was felt across the entire region, and just not politically.

First, Mayor Dan Horrigan, a close friend of his for many years, spoke about dealing with Russ on a personal and professional level.

Marco Sommerville also dealt with Russ on different projects throughout the years, and he talked of the county executive’s efforts on keeping jobs in the Akron area.

The passing of George Voinovich, a former mayor, governor, and senator in the state of Ohio, has caused plenty of public figures to step forward with their reflections and condolences. One of those figures is former Akron mayor Don Plusquellic. Though the two came from different political backgrounds, Plusquellic spoke in depth about the political and person life of Mr. Voinovich on the Ray Horner Morning Show. The long-time Akron mayor mentioned how he and Voinovich worked together over the years, and how it was possible to reach across the political aisle. Voinovich was the governor of Ohio from 1991-1998 and a member of the U.S. Senate from 1999. Prior to those offices, he was the mayor of Cleveland from 1980-1989. The Innerbelt Bridge in Cleveland, which is partially under construction, is dedicated to him.

An Akron communications pro best known for her time as communications director for former Akron mayor Don Plusquellic is opening up a new Akron office for a Cleveland-based crisis communications firm.

Stephanie York will lead the new Akron office for Hennes Communications.

After her time at Akron City Hall, where she was also assistant director of law, York has been communications director for Cleveland Clinic Akron General.

It’s been a full year since Don Plusquellic stepped down as the mayor of Akron. After 28 years in office, he left a very large pair of shoes that continue to be difficult to fill.

Now, in 2016, a new book about the former mayor in in stores now, penned by Steve Love from the Akron Beacon Journal. Love and Plusquellic joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to talk about the process of putting together this tell-all tome.

True to his nature, Plusquellic was quite candid about his life and political career, dating back to his football days at Kenmore High School. Plusquellic talked at length about his opposition over the years, his sports background, the loss of the Inventors Hall of Fame, the life of Ray Kapper, and bringing faith back to Akron.

The full one hour of the mayor and the author are posted in the Soundcloud link below. Love will be holding book signings around the region. The official book launch will be held at Quaker Station on June 22, starting at 6 PM.

Any mayor who serves for 28 years is bound to have some stories to tell, and former Akron mayor Don Plusquellic is no exception.

Many of those stories, and some from his younger years, are featured in Steve Love's new book The Indomitable Don Plusquellic: How a Controversial Mayor Quarterbacked Akron's Comeback. 

It's a product of many hours of interviews with Plusquellic, those who worked with him, and those who covered him. The topics included in the book range from Plusquellic's time as a high school quarterback to his use of joint economic development districts (JEDDs) to his often rocky relationship with the media.
