AUDIO Doug Miller To Join East Canton

After a storied career with Canton Central Catholic, Doug Miller will be the new athletic director and head baseball coach of the East Canton Hornets.

Miller joined Sam Bourquin Monday to talk about the new gig and what being a Hornet means to him at this point in his baseball journey.

''I love the community and I remember over the years some of the sports we played East Canton in, they were very competitive," Miller said. "It's a great fit."

He also said the community supports the district and their athletics as well, creating a positive environment within the East Canton cluster.

Miller joins East Canton after 700 wins in 34 years of coaching  with the Crusaders, where he won three state titles.

AUDIO CCC Baseball Moving Ahead In Tourney

The Canton Central Catholic Crusaders won in walk-off fashion yesterday, and they're looking to make even more noise in the state baseball tournament in Division III.

They got it done yesterday over Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 3-2, and head coach Doug Miller was certainly proud of his group, although the job is not finished in 2016.

Miller caught up with Sam Bourquin Wednesday to talk about the contest and how the Crusaders are off to the regionals.

"Our senior right-hander Jake Vance, boy what a game," Miller said. "Mooney's a great team, they scored 17 runs the night before against Crestview in the district semis, and he held them to three hits, and it's enough to move on."

CCC won on a walk-off by senior Clay Davies in the bottom of the 7th.

The Crusaders will move on to the Massillon regionals after winning their 12th district title since 1988.

After many years as the head coach of the Canton Central Catholic boys' baseball team, a familiar face will no longer be seen at the field that bears his name after the school year ends.

Doug Miller will be leaving CCC after 34 years of coaching and 37 years at the school at the end of the school year after signing a buyout.

Joe Scalzo from the Canton Repository joined the Sam Bourquin Show on a Friday to talk about the situation and where Miller and the school go from here.

Scalzo said that when he spoke to Miller for his story in the Rep , there was a somber tone in his voice.

"Obviously Doug isn't a fire breathing Central Catholic guy, he just wants to coach baseball, and he's very upset by this."

He also pointed out that the beloved coach was one of the most popular figures not only in the school, but in the Canton community as well.

The Crusaders won a state championship in baseball last season, and he won his 700th career game earlier this week.

CCC and Jackson will play this Saturday.

AUDIO CCC's Miller Gets Win # 700

One of the most well-known and successful baseball coaches in Ohio and Stark County history picked up his #700th career win yesterday against Lake Center Christian 1-0.

Canton Central Catholic's Doug Miller joined the Sam Bourquin Show to talk about the milestone, what it means to him, and the multitude of alumni and former players who called, texted, and congratulated him on this tremendous accomplishment.

Miller said it was a good feeling to get win number 700 in his 35-year coaching career. But he says its all about the young men out there on the diamond that make that win and all the ones before that truly magical.

"It's been a pretty good run, lots of good players, and I heard from a lot of guys from different eras and that makes it special."

The Crusaders play the Jackson Polar Bears at noon on Saturday in what should be a fantastic contest. CCC is 16-1 on the campaign this season.
