Green Fire Chief Jeffrey Funai tells the Akron Beacon Journal that the fire at the Kids Country Daycare on Town Park Boulevard started in a bathroom in the gym, and then spread to the roof.

With five fire companies responding, firefighters had the clames out within 10 minutes.

The daycare posted to social media that no kids were in the building at the time, but that they'll be closed the rest of the week, and that parents should make alternate child care plans.

The cause is still under investigation.

For the last three years, the city of Green has been in a battle with Nexus over construction of a pipeline in the town. On Wednesday night, that fight came to an end after a 4-3 decision in city council. Gerard Neugebauer, the mayor of Green, called in to the Ray Horner Morning Show to talk about the settlement with Nexus, which amounted to $7.8 million. Neugebauer said after three years, a decision had to be made, and he was advised by his legal team to settle. The pipeline will be eight miles long in Green city limits, and Nexus will have folks on site monitoring the pipeline 24/7. Nexus says the pipe will be inspected weekly, and will have training for first responders.

Update: Medina County officials reporting Lauren Delcoma, 22, has been found safe. Her mother posted an update on Facebook reporting that she was home as of 7 a.m. Monday morning. 

No other information is currently available.

Medina County Sheriff's Office is looking for missing 22-year-old Lauren Delcoma. 

She was last seen at the Alchemy Music Festival at a camp ground off of Coon Club Road. Her phone and other belongings were left at the campsite, but she hasn't been seen since. 

Delcoma is a graduate of Green High School. 

Anyone with information is asked to call Medina County Sheriff. 

Stark State College has announced that NEXUS Gas Transmission, LLC, has presented the school with a $50,000 scholarship donation during a presentation ceremony Tuesday.

The college's campus is near where NEXUS is looking to route its pipeline, pending approval from the federal government, and offers relevant training for students in the oil and gas industry programs. Stark said, in a press release, that the money will be put toward industry-related programs, scholarships, or facility improvements for students in that field.

The NEXUS pipeline proposal has been met with local opposition, including from the City of Green and local activist groups.

CANTON – NEXUS Gas Transmission, LLC (NEXUS) presented Stark State College with a $50,000 scholarship donation during a check presentation ceremony held earlier today.

Stark State is located near the proposed NEXUS route and offers relevant training for many careers in the oil and gas industry. As indicated by the college, the one-time donation will be used to support industry related programs, scholarships or training facility improvement for students pursuing certification and training to work in the oil and gas industry.

“We are grateful for this donation and the ability to use it to directly support hands-on training activities related to OSHA Safety Classes, Environmental Compliance Sampling of soils, water and air, and Department of Transportation (DOT)-required Operator Qualification training,” said Stark State College President Para M. Jones, Ph.D. “These skills and certifications are critical components of the labor force needs related to gas, water and other infrastructure projects throughout the region.”

The college executed a memorandum of understanding with NEXUS to ensure that funds are allocated to directly benefit students specializing in training for the oil and gas industry. If dollars are allocated for a student scholarship, Stark State officials will select the recipient and determine how the funds will be distributed.

“We value the role that Stark State College plays in educating and training the labor force in the region,” said NEXUS Spokesman Adam Parker. “Stark State has a positive reputation for attracting and retaining the most talented students and we are proud to support their efforts. Our investment today is rooted in our commitment to help build a highly skilled employee base in communities where we work and operate.”

The NEXUS Project is a proposed 255-mile natural gas pipeline that would run from eastern Ohio to existing pipeline system interconnects in southeastern Michigan. The proposed pipeline has been under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) review and permitting process since 2015. A decision on the Project’s Application for Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity is currently pending.

Construction of the NEXUS project is estimated to support 6,800 jobs, more than $650 million in wages, and $830 million in total economic activity. In its first five years of operation, NEXUS will generate an estimated cumulative tax revenue of $412 million, of which approximately $116 million will go directly to local school districts in Ohio.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office hopes some surveillance video helps them catch a burglar.

There have been several homes hit in the Green and Coventry Township areas recently, where someone forced open a door or window after checking the homes.

Jewelry, cell phones and other electronics were stolen.

(Summit County Sheriff's Office, news release) The Summit County Sheriff's Office is investigating several residential burglaries that have occurred within the City of Green and Coventry Township. These burglaries occurred during daytime and early evening hours. The suspect or suspects knocked on doors, checked the residence for occupants, and subsequently forced open a door or window. The suspect(s) has been entering the residences and stealing jewelry, cell phones, and other electronics.

On October 8, 2016, at approximately 7:51 p.m., a white male described as having short hair, approximately 6'0 in height, a heavy build, wearing black clothing and a black cap entered onto the front porch of a house in the City of Green. The suspect was captured on security footage as he entered onto the front porch and rang the front doorbell. The suspect momentarily left the front porch before returning and kicking the front door open. The suspect then entered the house and exited the through the front door a short time later.

The Sheriff's Office is seeking assistance in identifying the suspect captured on the home security camera footage. If anyone has information on the identity of this suspect, please contact the Summit County Sheriff's Office at 330-643-2131 or Crime Stoppers at 330-434-2677.

A serious accident along I-77 started with a high-speed chase between Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers and a suspect vehicle. 

According to the State Highway Patrol, a Trooper attempted to pull over a newer model Chevy Camaro around 1:45 a.m. Thursday along I-77 Northbound near the Akron-Canton Airport. The Trooper said when he turned on his lights, signalling the driver to pull over, the driver continued and sped up. That's when the pursuit started. 

The driver then attempted to exit the highway at the I-77 North exit to Massillon Road., lost control, and struck a light pole and a traffic box. The car was totaled and the driver was ejected from the vehicle. 

The car came to a rest on the west side of Massillon Road with the driver lying in the middle of the street alongside glass and other debris from the vehicle. 

He was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The ramp to Massillon Road was closed for several hours following the incident, but as of 10:35 a.m. has re-opened. 

Guilty pleas across the board now for the four adults who's heroin habits helped kill a 16-year old ini a Green hotel room back in April. Andrew Frye died of an overdose watched by his mother Heather, grandmother Brenda and family friend Jessica Irons. Now 59-year old Donald Callahan pleads guilty to posession of heroin, the fatal dose. He was supposed to go on trial today. He'll be sentenced in October.

(Summit Prosecutor's Office) Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh announced today that Donald Callaghan, 59, of Neville Avenue in Akron, pled guilty to possession of heroin. Callaghan's girlfriend, 52-year-old Brenda Frye, sold heroin belonging to Callaghan to her daughter Heather. Heather Frye's 16-year-old son Andrew died after ingesting the heroin.

Callaghan pled guilty as indicted to the following charge:

Possession of Heroin – a felony of the 5th degree

On August 31, 2016, Brenda Frye, Heather Frye, and Jessica Irons all pled guilty to various charges, including involuntary manslaughter, in connection with the death of Andrew Frye.

On April 6, 2016, 16-year-old Andrew Frye was found dead at a hotel room in Green, Ohio. The Summit County Medical Examiner determined the teen died from injecting heroin. Investigators discovered Frye's mother Heather, her friend Jessica Irons, and Heather Frye's mother Brenda Frye (Andrew's Grandmother) were all in the hotel room prior to Andrew's death. As part of their investigation, Summit County Sheriff's Deputies discovered the heroin Andrew used was obtained by Brenda Frye from her boyfriend Donald Callaghan. Brenda sold the heroin to Andrew's mother Heather while Andrew was present.

Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Lynne Callahan is scheduled to sentence Callaghan on October 26, 2016 at 1pm.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says they've arrested five teenagers, between the ages of 16 and 19, in connection to Tuesday morning's arson fire that destroyed the Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse at Boettler Park. 

It happened between 4 and 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. In addition to the fire at the schoolhouse, that was first built in 1885 and restored in 2002, investigators noticed other acts of vandalism throughout the park. They say a bathroom had been broken into on the grounds and significant damage was done inside. Also, the teens threw trash cans onto the rooftops of other buildings throughout the park.  

On Thursday morning, the Sheriff's Office released that they've arrested a 16-year-old male from Springfield Township, a 16-year-old female from Springfield Township, another 16-year-old male from Akron, 18-year-old Brandyn McCroskey, and 19-year-old Matthew R. Swan, both of Springfield Township. All five are charged with fifth-degree felony breaking and entering, fifth-degree felony vandalism, and fourth-degree felony arson. Swan and McCroskey were booked into the Summit County Jail while the juveniles were transported to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center. 

Sheriff Steve Barry says he is pleased with the expedient and thorough investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of all suspects involved. City of Green Mayor Gerard Neugebauer also releasing a statement: “Thank you to the Summit County Sheriff, Green’s Fire Division and the Ohio State Fire Marshal for their quick work in finding the individuals who caused this irreparable damage to our beloved historical schoolhouse."

Deputies are looking for the person responsible for breaking into the Caston and Main Brew Yard in Green.

The incident happened on July 18th around 3 a.m. at the South Main Street business. Summit County Sheriff's deputies say a armed man entered the building through the roof and ransacked the business. Deputies are hoping to identify the man with the public's help.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office released surveillance video (below) from the business to help identify the suspect.

Exactly one year since its groundbreaking, Central Park in the city of Green will officially open to the public this weekend. 

The mother and grandmother of the 16-year-old boy who was found dead inside a hotel room in Green are facing charges in the teen's suspected heroin overdose death.

Summit County Sheriff Steve Barry says Andrew Frye's mother, Heather Frye, and grandmother, Brenda Frye, are each facing an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Heather's son, Andrew, was found dead in the Super 8 hotel room Wednesday night. Preliminary results show that the 16-year-old had heroin in his system, although further tests are needed for confirmation to see if fentanyl also played a role.

Andrew, his mother, and his mother's friend, Jessica Irons, were staying the night at the hotel. Deputies say Andrew's mother told police she wanted to be "the fun weekend mom."

Irons is also facing a pair of charges including tampering with evidence and possesion of drugs. Another person has also been charged with possession of drugs.

Heather is also charged with child endangering and tampering with evidence and Brenda is also facing corruption and trafficking in drugs charges.

Teen Found Dead Inside Hotel In Green

UPDATE: The teen found dead at a hotel in Green last night has been identified as 16-year-old Andrew Frye of Akron. Summit County Sheriff's deputies and the Green Fire Department arrived on scene and found the boy lying on the floor inside a room at the Super 8 hotel on Corporate Woods Parkway shortly before 7 p.m. The medical examiner's officer reports there were no signs of trauma.

Deputies say the preliminary investigation revealed that the boy stayed the night at the hotel with his mother, Heather Frye, and his mother's friend, Jessica Irons. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

The three went to the motel, so Andrew could go swimming, but eventually ended up shooting heroin together in the hotel bathroom - according to a Medical Examiner's report.

That report says that there were no signs of trauma. 

The cause of death has yet to be determined, and Andrew Frye is diabetic.

An investigation is underway after a teen was found dead inside a hotel room in Green Wednesday night.

No word yet on what happened, but the Medical Examiner's Office tells NewsChannel 5 that the 16-year-old boy was found dead in a Super 8 hotel room on Corporate Woods Parkway around 8:30.

Summit County Sheriff's deputies say they have arrested a Coventry Township man who is believed to be involved in at least a dozen break-ins in Summit County.

Joshua Collmar, 36, was arrested after a month long investigation and two incidents where he fled from authorities. On February 11th, deputies say Collmar tried to strike a cruiser when he was caught in a stolen vehicle with stolen property inside after a break-in in Green. Less than a week later, Collmar was pulled over in another stolen car with several car keys from a local dealership.

Several items were recovered including hand tools, power tools, a U-Haul moving truck full of stolen property, and a 2016 Winnebago camper.

Collmar has been charged with breaking and entering and receiving stolen property. He was booked into the Summit County Jail. 

A woman from Green has been arrested for kidnapping a young child.

27 year old Olivia Remenyi, who reportedly has a history of psychotic episodes and drug use, took her two-year old cousin to the store on Friday and did not return. The parents of the child called the Summit County Sheriff's Office who then issued an AMBER Alert.

The child was found around 9:00 PM at a suspected drug house left with an unknown person on the porch. Remenyi took off on foot, but was captured after a short chase. She admitted to keeping the child longer than permitted by his mother and even to taking him along on a drug run.

The two-year old was evaluated by the Akron Fire Department and released to his parents.

Remenyi was booked into the Summit County Jail.

(Summit County Sheriff's Office) On November 06, 2015, Olivia Remenyi watched her 2 year old cousin at his residence in the City of Green. Olivia was provided consent from the child's mother for her to take the child to the store. She was instructed to return the child within the hour. Several hours later, she had not returned and she was not answering her telephone. The child's family contacted the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

Olivia has a history of psychotic episodes and drug use. Her vehicle was tracked by phone to the area of Simmons Court in the City of Akron. Witness information indicated she fled the vehicle on foot with the juvenile. The Sheriff's Office issued an Amber Alert and BOLOS were sent out in an effort to locate Remenyi and the child. The Sheriff's Office began a search of the area with deputies, detectives, and the assistance of the Akron Police Department.

At approximately 9:00 p.m., the child was located at a suspected drug house. Remenyi left the child with unknown persons on the porch. She then fled on foot and was apprehended after a short chase. The child was treated and evaluated on the scene by Akron Fire and released to his parents.

Olivia Remenyi was interviewed and admitted to taking the child longer than permitted by his mother. Remenyi took the child with a friend to 6 different locations in the city to purchase drugs. She consumed crack cocaine in the presence of the child and at the last house, she used drugs and left the child on the porch.

Sheriff Steve Barry commented, "This was an entire agency effort with wonderful results. I am very proud of our agency. Thanks to their determination to quickly follow every lead and evaluate any and all information, this child was found safe and the suspect was apprehended."

Olivia Remenyi, age 27 of Green was arrested and charged with Kidnapping (F-2) andChild Endangering (M-1). She was booked into the Summit County Jail.

UPDATE 1:38 PM: A manhunt that lasted about eight hours in Green is over, with the arrest of a 16-year old.

According to Summit County sheriff's deputies, the Youngstown boy ran off when deputies pulled over a stolen pick up truck that he and two adults were in.

He wound up in a car with a couple of other teens that led to a chase and when the car was finally pulled over, the young man escaped again.

The sheriff's department says the teen was found in a wooded area just south of Greensburg Road, and threw a stolen handgun before deputies caught up with him near Global Gateway Drive.

Two adults were charged with felony motor vehicle theft - 21 year-old Michael Wilson of Youngstown and 26 year-old Tyler Rogers of Akron. Sheriff's deputies say they threw a loaded, semi-automatic rifle out of the vehicle on Massillon Road while deputies were trying to stop the car.

The Sheriff's office says other charges are pending.

Summit County Sheriff's deputies are still searching for a 16-year-old boy who reportedly got away from authorities after deputies spotted two men and the teen in a stolen truck in Green overnight.

Deputies tell NewsChannel 5 that all three fled from the truck when deputies attempted a traffic stop. They caught up to the two men, but they're still searching for the Youngstown teen who allegedly got into another car with two other teens and led police on a chase.

The two teens were caught, but -- once again -- the 16-year-old boy got away. He's believed to be armed and in the Greensburg Road area.
