This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Maxwell Moldovan a junior golfer from Green High School.

Maxwell said he learned the game from his father, who works in the golf industry.

"He got me into the game. we live on a golf course, so the opportunity to play was presented to me early," he said.
Maxwell had an outstanding season for the Bulldogs in 2018. He won 4 out of 6 tournaments in the regular season and won the 2018 Division I sectionals earlier this month.

His coach Jason Martin said Moldovan has an excellent work ethic and that translates on both the course and in the classroom.

“Maxwell Moldovan is a very hard worker and dedicated golfer. He has had an incredible 2018 high school golf season as defending state champion, he explained.“

“He is a super young man and a pleasure to coach.”

Maxwell says he patterns his game after recent WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Champion Justin Thomas, who is one of the rising stars on the PGA Tour.

"I look up to him, our games are similar and we're built similarly, so he's a guy I can see myself potentially competing against."

We wish Maxwell the best in all of his future endeavors.

Our next Student Athlete of the Week is senior tennis player Emily Christopher of Green High School.

Emily says she enjoys the competition of tennis and working with her coaches and teammates day in and out.

"I learned leadership skills and my teammates have taught me a lot about respect and the game as well," she explained. "I love my teammates and the team atmosphere of it."

Her coach Jenna Montisano says Emily is a smart tennis player with a great feel for the game.

“She has a variety of shots, and is great at reading the court to find the open spots. She can be consistent or aggressive depending on what it takes to defeat her opponents,“ she said.

“She and her doubles partner, Lauren DePew, have had a lot of success this year. They won the Dover Invitational (beating out 8 schools). They finished 3rd in the Federal League, and had an overall record of 18-4.”

Off the court, Emily exhibits the character that makes for not only a good athlete, but a quality person as well.

“She is extremely kind; both on and off the court. Emily is very ethical and honest. She is extremely intelligent, and is her own person. She doesn’t buy into what others think. She works hard, and is always looking for ways to better herself.”

Away from the court, Emily volunteers at her church and likes spending time with friends and family.

Upon graduation in the spring, Emily plans on attending the University of Akron to study criminal justice.

We wish Emily the best in all of her future endeavors.

Green HS Briefly on Modified Lockdown Friday

On Friday morning, just after 8 a.m., Green High School was placed on "modified lockdown" after a social media threat.

Inspector Bill Holland with the Summit County Sheriff's Office says a 17-year-old male student of Green High made threats and posted pictures students online. Holland said that the student claimed to be on the campus at the time the threat was made, thus prompting the lockdown. It wasn't until nearly two hours  later, after the school was searched, that the student was found at an address nearby, not on school property. Inspector Holland was unable to comment whether or not that was the student's home.

A "modified lockdown" means the students were not locked in classrooms, and essentially, the day went on as normal. The lockdown was lifted just before 10 a.m.

Holland told 1590 WAKR that while the threats were not specific, charges are pending against the teenager.
