Browns' RG3 Out Due To Shoulder Injury

After injuring his shoulder in Sunday's season opening loss against the Philadelphia Eagles, quarterback Robert Griffin III will miss significant playing time.

A Browns news release says Griffin will miss "an extended period of time" and that his shoulder will be "re-evaluated" in 3 to 4 weeks.

After being placed on injured reserve, Griffin will be out for at least eight games.

Josh McCown takes over the Browns starting quarterback job.

(Cleveland Browns, news release) Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III sustained a significant injury during the team's season opener at Philadelphia on Sunday and has been placed on injured reserve.*

He is expected to miss an extended period of time during the 2016 season after medical tests on Sunday night and Monday morning revealed a fractured coracoid bone in his left shoulder. Although surgery is not required at this time, Griffin's left shoulder will be re-evaluated in 3-4 weeks.

"It's very unfortunate, Robert came in and has worked extremely hard to learn our offense and earn the respect of his teammates," Browns coach Hue Jackson said. "This is a tough loss because everyone has seen how invested he has been in this team and his dedication to the work needed to improve his craft. We all know these are the realities of the NFL, injuries occur and you have to find ways to overcome them so they don't impede your progress. Robert will do everything in his power to rehab and get healthy but Josh McCown is on this roster for a reason and we have great confidence in him. He is more than capable. His veteran presence has been an asset to our team throughout our process of preparing for the season. We look forward to him assuming the role of the starter and leading our offensive unit."

Griffin signed with the Browns as a free agent in March. He completed 12 of 26 passes for 190 yards and added 37 rushing yards against the Eagles.

McCown started eight games for the Browns last season. He completed 186 of 292 passes for 2,109 yards with 12 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 93.3 rating in 2015.

* Under the new injured reserve rules for the 2016 season, each team can designate one player to return. Designation does not need to be made until that player is able to return to practice. A player placed on injured reserve is eligible to return to practice in six weeks and must miss a minimum of eight games.

A new week, a new starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

Coach Mike Pettine says Austin Davis gets the nod as the Browns take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Josh McCown is hurt, and Johnny Manziel is being punished.

Pettine says it's not about the length of that punishment, but it's about a need to see both young quarterbacks.

Davis led the Browns to a touchdown in the fourth quarter against Baltimore replacing the injured McCown, and Pettine says he deserves the chance to start. The Browns also officially signed former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor - but as a wide receiver.

Coach Pettine does say that Pryor being on the roster provides "an insurance policy", should the team need a third quarterback.

The naming of Davis means another name has been added to an infamous Browns jersey display, as the 24th starting Browns quarterback since the return of the team in 1999.

Cleveland's Brokaw Advertising jokes that it's running out of white tape adding the names to the jersey.

McCown Out For Season, But Who Starts?

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown was pulled out of Monday night's game with the Ravens when he was injured.

Now, that injury will sideline him for the rest of this season.

"It's the worst case scenario for Josh," Browns head coach Mike Pettine told reporters in a conference call on Monday. "He will miss the remainder of the season with a fracture to his collarbone."

Coach Pettine says that McCown's injury won't require surgery, but the quarterback won't be able to come back before season's end.

"It's not displaced so he does not need surgery, but it will take more than the rest of the season to get it healed up," Pettine says.

Pettine says Josh means a lot to the team.

"He's in the locker room, practice field, game day, just the positive energy that he exuded, and leadership," Pettine says, "I just can't say enough positive things about Josh McCown and what he's done for this football team, and what he means for this football team."

Pettine won't, however, name a starter in McCown's absence.

Second string quarterback Austin Davis led the Browns to a touchdown drive on Monday. Johnny Manziel was active as the third string quarterback, but did not play.
