AUDIO Former Purple Raider Talks Stagg Bowl

As the Mt. Union Purple Raiders look to win a 12th Division III championship, the Purple Raiders are playing well and looking strong.

Former professional quarterback and Mt. Union signal-caller Jim Ballard joined the Sam Bourquin Show Thursday to talk about the team heading into Salem, VA and their chances against St. Thomas (Minn) on Friday night.

"We took away the run (against Wisconsin-Whitewater) and we have a dual-threat quarterback in Taurice Scott, so we're in good shape," Ballard said.

Ballard says the senior quarterback out of Alliance has truly learned the position and has taken command of his team.

"He's going through his progressions, he's making his reads, he's not looking to run right away if he sees nothing downfield," Jim explained.

As far as St Thomas, he knows they will look to establish the run early.

"They have a big offensive line, look for Mount to stack the box, so we have to stop them early and make some plays."

AUDIO Coach Fuline Talking Mt. Union Basketball

The Mt. Union Purple Raiders men's basketball team has grinded their way to victories in the first eight games of the season, and coming off a win last night against Ohio Northern, life is pretty good for the boys from Alliance.

Mike Fuline, the head coach of the men's hoop squad joined the Sam Bourquin Show to talk about his team and their scrappy style of play.

"We try to grind out wins and play as hard as we can," Fuline said.

Coach Fuline says his team doesn't have one superstar, but they have a collection of guys who come in with the right mindset and play the game with heart and hustle.

"This group is always trying to find a way," he said.

They are 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the OAC.

AUDIO Mt. Union Ready For Semifinal Showdown

The Mount Union Purple Raiders will meet up with an old foe for the right to go to Salem, VA in the Division III National Championship Game.

Head football coach Vince Kehres joined the Sam Bourquin Show Tuesday to talk about the win over Wesley last weekend and their semifinal matchup with Wisconsin-Whitewater in Alliance this Saturday.

Coach Kehres said his team will be prepared defensively to stop the run from the Warhawks, which is their bread and butter offensively.

For the Raiders themselves, they know that in the special teams department, teams will try to kick it away from Tim Kennedy.

"We will try to win the field position battle other ways and try to get the ball in Tim's hands other ways," he says.

Coach said the atmosphere in Alliance for gameday is going to be electric, but the coaching staff and the players will be focused on the task at hand.

"If you're a fan of football, I encourage you to come out and see two pretty good teams slugging it out on Saturday," Kehres said.

If they win, the Purple Raiders will play in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl against either Linfield or St.Thomas next Friday at 7 p.m.
