Student Athletes of the Week Alexis Mayle & Tyler Eberhart

This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Alexis Mayle, a senior volleyball player from Barberton High School.

She says that working with her coaches and teammates is something she truly enjoys.

“It's fun," she says. " "It means the world to me to be as close as I am with them."

Alexis is a two sport athlete for the Magics playing volleyball during the fall and softball during the spring. She says that the balance between academics and athletics is a tough one, but necessary.

“I take my schoolwork very seriously, " she explains.

Among her accomplishments, she is a three year varsity letter winner in volleyball and will be a four year letter winner in softball, garnering Suburban League 2nd team honors as a junior.

Away from the athletics, Mayle is a member of the Math team and works at a local restaurant in the Barberton area.

Her volleyball coach Nick Williams discusses how she leads both on and off the court.

“It has been pleasure coaching Mayle these past four years! Lexi brings a fiery, determined, hard-working and fun attitude to the game, that not only the team respects and loves, but the coaching staff does as well,” he said.

“Her hard work and bubbly personality will be missed tremendously by everyone. “

Our next Male Student Athlete of the Week is Tyler Eberhart, a senior football player from Barberton High School.

Tyler says he grew to love the game of football from an early age.

“I first started loving football as soon as I started playing," he said. "I just fell in love with it immediately."

He says as a two time captain, leadership in all forms is important.

“This year as a senior it's a little more vocal and still leading by example."

Tyler is a two sport athlete in both football and track and field. In addition to being a letterman in both of those sports, he is also a member of the National Honor Society, Math Club, and Student Council.

Coach Tony Gotto has this to say about Eberhart, one of the leaders on the field and in the locker room.

“I asked the team one day of who our overall leader is and it was unanimous,” he said of Eberhart.

He does every community service and has incredible work ethic.” And

In the community, Eberhart works at Barberton Local Tees and is also involved with his church, Barberton First Baptist.

Upon graduation in the spring of 2020, Tyler plans on studying mechanical engineering. He is currently undecided on where he will attend school, but has been offered by both Case Western Reserve and Valparaiso to continue to play football.

1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week Jamie Matheson

This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Jamie Matheson, a senior soccer player from Barberton High School.

Jamie says soccer is a family affair and she shares that love of the game with her sisters.

“My two younger sisters played and they started playing first and I went to the games and I wanted to play and never stopped,” she said.

Jamie currently plays for the Magics with one of her sisters and she enjoys that experience.

“We’re harder on each other, but it works well, we like each other, and we like playing together.”

As a captain, Matheson says she leads both vocally and by example, depending on what the team calls for. Head Coach Scott Kelley said Jamie is a standout player for the Magics.

“She anchors our defense with impressive speed and incredible vision of the game,” Kelley said.

That excellence also transfers away from the pitch as well according to Kelley.

“Off the field, she has earned a 3.68 GPA, and is involved in several BHS clubs and community activities,” he said.

Jamie is actively involved in Student Council, Helping Hands, and Ski Club. Upon graduation in the spring, Jamie plans on attending the University of Akron, where she looks to major in Financial Planning.

1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week: Nick Plucinski

This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Nick Plucinski, a junior football player for Barberton High School.

Nick enjoys the community of Barberton and how they get behind the Magics football team.

“The support is helping us out on our journey through the season,” Plucinski said.

A two-sport athlete, Nick plays football for coach Tony Gotto and baseball coach Steve Fasig. Gotto had some great words for the junior linebacker who had a big impact in Week 1 against neighboring rival Norton.

“He had the play of the game when he blocked the overtime extra point to seal the deal,” Gotto said.

Gotto also spoke to his academic success as well, pointing to his sophomore year in which he played baseball.

“As a sophomore last spring during baseball season, Nick was an all-district catcher and batted .460 while maintaining a 3.95 GPA.”

Nick is also a part of the Drug Free Club at Barberton High School, and he prides himself on working hard both on the field and in the classroom.

“It’s very hard, but you have to stay up and grind it out,” he says.

Norton-Barberton Shooter Injured, Arrested

The 911 call came in to Norton Police just about 7 p.m. Tuesday; reports of a man with a long rifle standing underneath a covered storage unit at the Barber Road Storage facility in Norton.

There were no reports of "shots fired" at the time.

Norton Police, Barberton Police, and the SWAT team comprised of officers from Norton, Barberton, and New Franklin Police departments, arrived within minutes. The suspect, 41-year-old David Michael Havrilek, was there with an assault-style rifle waiting for police and opened fire when they arrived. Police returned fire. The exchange lasted several minutes and Havrilek was injured in the shootout. Police then were able to take him into custody and then he was transported to Akron General Medical Center.

There is no word yet on the charges Havrilek, an Akron resident, is facing, but he is no stranger to the law. He has a criminal history, including charges for felonious assault and domestic violence, among others.

Norton Police Chief John D'alessandro said in a press conference following the incident that "the good guys" prevailed Tuesday night. It was Chief D'alessandro's ascertation that Havrilek was attempting to lure responding officers into a wooded area near the storage facility, but officers responded in accordance to their training and did not take the bait.

Barberton High School and Middle School were placed on lockdown, while the Barberton Sports Complex and two area businesses were evacuated. The all-clear was given and the lockdowns lifter at about 8:37 p.m.

While the situation was still "active," an Ohio Highway Patrol helicopter was deployed and officers used infrared to confirm that there was not a second suspect. There was no second suspect, just Havrilek.

The Magics will be getting ready to head to Copley for a playoff matchup against the Indians in March.

Barberton Teacher Suspended For Slur

Barberton City Schools has suspended a male high school teacher after reportedly using a racial slur directed at a student.

Superintendent Patty Cleary notified parents of the situation Tuesday about 4 p.m., saying that other students heard the comment. She said the teacher, whose name has not been released, is on administrative leave while they investigate the situation.

No other information was made available at this time.

AUDIO Falls & Barberton Battle For Bell

The Barberton Magics and Cuyahoga Falls Black Tigers will be in their "Battle for the Bell" tonight at Clifford Stadium in Cuyahoga Falls.

Cuyahoga Falls Head Coach Sean Flaherty spoke with Sam Bourquin and Brad Russell about what challenges the Magics bring for his ballclub.

The Black Tigers are 1-1 on the season.

For Barberton, head coach Tony Gotto says his team will be prepared to go on the road and take care of business.

The Magics are 2-0 heading into Week 3. These two teams have played since 1911.

MULTIMEDIA Camp Days: Barberton High School

The high school football season is just weeks away and many teams are looking to improve off of last year's success and one of those teams that is looking to do just that is the Barberton Magics.

Tony Gotto spoke with me during Suburban League Media Day to talk about his squad, the tough Suburban League slate, and some of the key young men who will be playing under the lights for the Magics this year.

"We've had a great offseason and we're looking forward to the season," he said.

The Magics were 7-3 in 2015 and are continuing to build their program with tough kids who play disciplined football.

AUDIO Greynolds Excited To Return Home

A familiar name will be patrolling the sidelines in Barberton this coming basketball season, and he hopes to bring the "magic" back to one of the area's more known programs.

Jackie Greynolds, Jr. will be the next head coach of the Barberton boys' basketball team, and he plans on making his imprint on the program.

"I'm really excited," Greynolds said. "It really hasn't sunk in yet, and it doesn't matter who my dad was, if you don't get the job done."

Jack Greynolds Sr., Jackie's dad was a legendary coach of the Magics who guided the team to a state title in the 1976.
