Portage Water Rescue Busy, Fundraising

The Portage County Water Rescue Team has been busy over the past month rescuing kayakers and others from the Cuyahoga River in Kent, and their worn down equipment shows.

More than 22 people have needed helping getting out of the unusually high and fast river over that time. The water level has risen dramatically and the current is higher than normal due to the heavy rain that's come down, specifically over the month of June.

The video below is from a rescue on June 22nd, courtesy of YouTube user Scott Budzar:

To help raise money for replacement gear, the Portage County Water Rescue Team is selling T-shirts with their logo on them.

Employee Stabs Coworker in Easter Altercation

On Easter Sunday, Streetsboro Police received a call from the Gardens of Western Reserve Assisted Living at 9975 Greentree Parkway, that claimed an employee had stabbed another employee. The call cut off, but when officers responded, they found a 19-year-old female with severe cuts.

Witnesses told police that the suspect, 19-year-old Emilie Brunswick of Ravenna, had fled the scene. The victim was transported to University Hospital Portage Medical Campus in Ravenna and police went to go look for Brunswick, who was later found at a relative's home in Aurora, with the help of the Portage County Sheriff's Department. She was placed under arrest for Felonious Assault.

The victim, whose name wasn't released, was treated and released from the hospital two days after the incident, but police say she will require follow-up care.

The report added that no patients nor residents of Gardens of Western Reserve were in danger at any time.

25-Year-Old Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting

An investigation is underway in a fatal officer-involved shooting in Kent early Thursday morning. Kent police say officers responded to a disturbance call shortly before 4 a.m. at a Virginia Avenue home.

NewsChannel 5 reports the cousin of 25-year-old Douglas Yon told police dispatchers that Yon refused to leave the house and was armed with a machete. She also reported that Yon was going to run toward officers and "make them shoot."

Kent police say four officers responded on scene. Police say Yon "engaged officers, wielding a machete." Officers fired an unknown amount of shots at the man. An ambulance was called in to administer first-aid, but Yon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities did not release the names of the officers involved or how many officers fired their weapons.

The Portage County Sheriff's Office is conducting an independent investigation and BCI is assisting with the collection of evidence.
