University of Akron head football coach Terry Bowden spoke with Sam Bourquin about the Zips' season opener in Lincoln against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

It took a bit longer than the Zips would have liked, but Akron beat Western Michigan 14-13 on Sunday to improve to 3-0 in MAC play. The game was delayed from Saturday after rain flooded Western Michigan's stadium. The win leaves Akron just two wins away from bowl eligibility with six games to play.

Akron head coach Terry Bowden joined Jasen to talk about the game, the challenges involved with a postponed game, and this week's game against Toledo at the Glass Bowl.

University of Akron Zips head football coach Terry Bowden spoke with Sam and Brad to talk about the upcoming season and the quarterback competition heading into Week 1 against Penn State.

 Defensively, linebacker Ulysees Gilbert will be expected to bring leadership on the field this upcoming season for the Zips.

Zips running back Warren Ball also discussed his excitement to get things going this football season.  A transfer from Ohio State, Ball said his journey to Akron has been one with challenges, but he relishes his leadership role with the team.

"I just want to make those around me better and help this team win," Ball said.

 The Zips finished 5-7 overall and 3-5 in MAC play in 2016.

Some local talent headlines this year's haul including Ellet's Marquise Bridges,  Jemarulin Suggs and De'Andre Brimage from East, and Cobie Booker from Barberton.

Among those mourning the death of ESPN mainstay John Saunders is Terry Bowden.

The University of Akron's head football coach worked alongside Saunders in ABC-TV's college football studio every Saturday for five years...between Bowden's coaching jobs.

"Not only was he a good, good person, but maybe the best TV guy I've been around," Bowden tells WAKR's Jasen Sokol. "He'll be in front of a live television, you put him in front of there...no matter what happens, a satellite feed screws up, he could handle any situation."

Bowden says not only did Saunders teach him how to be a broadcaster, he was also "fun loving", a good family man with a great sense of humor.

Saunders died at the age of 61.
