Student Athletes of the Week: Ellie McCoy and Clayton Mosher: Stow High School

This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Ellie McCoy a junior golfer from Stow-Munroe Falls High School.

She says that being a Stow Student Athlete is a special part of her experience, saying that the athletes all support each other, no matter what the sport.

“You are friends with other student athletes and they help you with your schoolwork and other school activities,” she said.

Ellie was the Suburban League Player of the year in 2019 and made it to sectionals as well.

She says that she models her game after LPGA Golfer Lexi Thompson.

“She’s a good role model for women’s golf and I like her game a lot,” she explained.

Her coach Scotte Rorabaugh said Ellie is a leader in many ways and exemplifies what a Student Athlete is.

“Ellie is a student-athlete in every sense of the word,” Rorabaugh said.

“Her leadership skills are only exceeded by her work ethic which is unparalleled in both the classroom and on the golf course and clearly evident by her success as one of the best students in her class and one of the top golfers in northeast Ohio.”

In addition to being a golfer, she also plays basketball at the school and is part of DECA and is the Junior Exec Committee Vice President.

For volunteer work, she along with a group went to Fiji and taught English to the folks there and helped build a water tank and helped create a food bank.

Our next Male Student Athlete of the Week is Clayton Mosher a junior football player from Stow- Munroe Falls High School.

He grew to appreciate the game of football as a youngster and has loved it ever since.

“I started playing tackle football in third grade and I played every year since then, and I love everything about it, from the first game I played to the first practice,” he said.

Mosher is a three sport athlete playing football, basketball, and track. In 2019 he lettered ( for the third time) and was nominated as a captain.

He says that he leads by example and vocally, out there on the practice field and in games.

“It’s important to lead by example, but also you got to get your guys going at times,” he explained.

Second year head coach Tom Phillips had this to say about his junior captain,

“I can best describe Clayton as a born leader with an intrinsic and unmatched drive for excellence in all endeavors,” Phillips said.

“Clayton's positive leadership skills, dedication to craft and teammate responsibilities earns him respect by our players, football staff, parents and the community at-large. “

Away from the field, he got a chance to go on a mission trip to Memphis, Tennessee in eighth grade working on houses.

He said it was a rewarding and unique experience he had to help those in need.

“I went with some of my good friends through a mission trip with my church actually, and we got to paint houses, it was really cool to help some elderly people who really couldn’t do that.”

We wish Ellie and Clayton the best in all of their future endeavors.

1590 WAKR Student Athletes of the Week Emily Andrassy and Jackson Carlson

his week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Emily Andrassy, a senior basketball player from Stow-Munroe Falls High School.

Emily says she started playing basketball from an early age, and has enjoyed the game ever since.

“My parents are very athletic, but I’ve always been athletic and I enjoyed playing outside with my neighbors,” she said.

As a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain both junior and senior year, Emily said that even though she can motivate her teammates vocally, she mostly leads by example on the practice floor, and on game day.

"I probably lead more by example, but I try to be more vocal, but it’s all about coming to practice and working hard.”

Her head coach Bob Podges had some great words for Andrassy and what she brings to the court.

"Emily is the heart and soul of our team," he said. "She's our best defender with an oustanding competive spirt."

The leadership qualities that she displays on the court also are on display off the court as Andrassy participates in the Freshman Mentorship program, something she takes a great deal of pride in.

Upon graduation in the spring, Emily plans on attending Kent State University.

Our next Male Student Athlete is Jackson Carlson, a senior basketball player from Stow High School.

He said he too fell in love with the game of basketball from an early age.

"My dad put a basketball in my hand since I before I can remember, and I’ve always been around the sport and loved it,” he said.

As a two-sport athlete for Stow (basketball and baseball), Carlson says he enjoys being with his teammates and working with them towards a common goal.

Coach Dave Close, the longtime coach of the Bulldogs, said that Jackson has grown as a player and as a person.

"He is a young man who has worked very hard to improve as a player and as a junior, he did not receive a lot of playing time. But he rolled up his sleeves and worked hard
the entire off-season to become a better and more well-rounded player," he said.

He also works hard off the court as well to become a more well-rounded person as well.

"He too has volunteered at Open M and has volunteered in the summer helping to teach youngsters
the game of basketball," Close said.

Carlson plans on majoring in education when he attends college in the spring, He says helping youngsters is something he's really interested in.

"I always liked being around students and want to coach as well,” he explained.

We wish Emily and Jackson the best in all of their future endeavors.

This stems from the unpredictable nature of Ohio's weather and how this could benefit teams in the area.

Stow, Hudson, Hoban, Mogadore Remain in Playoffs

There are 28 teams vying for an opportunity to play for a state championship in Columbus and among them are locals Hudson, Archbishop Hoban, Canton Central Catholic, Perry, Stow and Mogadore.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the fourth round playoff pairings and sites Sunday and the games are slated to be played Friday and Saturday.

The Stow Bulldogs (12-0) are one of five teams making their first final four appearance. They'll match up against St. Edward (12-1) in Parma on Saturday at 7:30 p.m..

Canton Central Catholic (9-3) is coming off of a 33-6 victory over Columbiana Crestview. Canton Central Catholic will compete against Milan Edison at Wooster Triway Jack Miller Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Hudson (11-2) is coming off their best season in school history with a 13-1 record. The Explorers will look to upend Perry (11-2), as they will face off in Solon at Stewart Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Mogadore (12-1) is no stranger to playoff football. The team is making its 17th final four appearance. The Wildcats will take on Danville Friday at Orrville's Red Rider Stadium at 7:30 p.m..

Hoban (12-1) won the Division VII regional title Friday, after they defeated St.Vincent St. Mary for the second time this season by a score of 24-21. Hoban will play Zanesville in the state semi-final at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

(OHSAA News Release) OHSAA Releases Fourth-Round Football Playoff Pairings and Sites

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2015 OHSAA football playoffs have now reached the fourth round, with 28 teams remaining for this weekend's state semifinals and the opportunity to play for a state championship. The fourth round also marks the regional finals for Division I, which has only two regions. Neutral sites were selected by the OHSAA on Sunday for the 14 games around the state this Friday and Saturday.

Playoff Format and Schedule
Unless otherwise noted, Divisions II, III, V and VII will play at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays during the playoffs, while Divisions I, IV and VI will play at 7 p.m. on Saturdays.

Ticket Information
Fans are encouraged to buy their playoff tickets in advance at the participating schools, which keep a percentage of the revenue. For state semifinal playoff games, tickets are $8 presale and $10 at the gate. All-session ticket books are currently on sale for the state championship games Dec. 3, 4 and 5 at http://go.osu.edu/OHSAAFB. All-session ticket books in the club level, which are the chair-back seats on the west side of the stadium, are $105 each (good for all seven games) and also permit indoor access in the Huntington Club before, during and after each game. All-session reserved ticket books on the east side of the stadium, which don't include indoor access, are $84 each. Single game tickets will go on sale November 29 and cost $10 at the state finalist schools, or at the gate before each game for $15 (club level) and $12 (reserved).

Looking Ahead to the State Championships
The state championships are Dec. 3, 4 and 5 in Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Of the four divisions that play their playoff games on Friday nights (II, III, V and VII), one will be selected to play its state championship game on Thurs., Dec. 3. The other three will play their state championship games on Fri., Dec. 4. Divisions I, IV and VI will play their state championship games on Sat., Dec. 5. Specific game times will be announced on the OHSAA's twitter account (www.Twitter.com/OHSAASports) the Friday and Saturday nights of the semifinals (around 10:45 PM).

Five Schools Make First "Final Four" Appearance
Five schools are making their first trip to the state semifinals, including Stow-Munroe Falls (Div. I), Perrysburg (Div. II), Milan Edison (Div. V), Grandview Heights (Div. VI) and Fort Recovery (Div. VII). Edison, in fact, hadn't won a playoff game prior to this season. Fort Recovery had only one playoff win prior to this year, while Stow, Perrysburg and Grandview Heights all had just two playoff wins.

Schools Build on Impressive History
Several schools this weekend are adding another "final four" appearance to an already impressive resume. Chief among them are Mogadore (Div. VII), which is making its 17th appearance, and Steubenville (Div. IV), which is making its 16th appearance. Other semifinal regulars include Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI) making its 14th overall (fifth in a row and nine of last 10 years) and Coldwater (Div. V) making its 13th overall (seventh in a row). Trotwood-Madison (Div. III) is back for the sixth year in a row and Kirtland (Div. VI) is back for the fifth year in a row. Also noteworthy is Middletown Bishop Fenwick, which made eight semifinal appearances in the first 16 years of the playoffs (1972-1987), and is now back for the first time since then.

Compare and Contrast: Divisions II and IV
When the OHSAA expanded the football playoffs to seven divisions in 2013 and made Division I smaller (largest 72 schools in the state), one of the resulting effects was that many schools that used to be "small" Div. I schools were now in Div. II. That fact is evidenced again this year as the Div. II state semifinalists are all making their first or second appearance in the "final four." Compare that to the semifinalists in Div. IV, which have combined to make 42 appearances.

Information on Neutral Sites
There are many factors that go into determining playoff sites, such as quality of field surface, seating capacity, quality of lighting, size of locker rooms and their distance from field, press box size, parking spaces available, and a separate locker room for officials. After all those factors are taken into consideration, it must be confirmed that the site is available and willing to host a playoff game on the date needed. Not all sites are available when requested by the OHSAA.
