The Akron Sound

Written by

You've probably heard of "The Akron Sound" when it comes to the area's music history.

An Akron man is working towards a permanent "Akron Sound" museum.

A benefit concert for the planned museum is set for tonight night at Jilly's Music Room.

Wayne Beck says the "Akron Sound" was known worldwide.

"It was back in the 70s and 80s, that whole music coming out of Akron was called 'The Akron Sound'," Beck tells WAKR's Jasen Sokol. "And we were actually known as 'The Liverpool of the Americas'."

Musical acts like Devo, Tin Heuy, and Chrissie Hynde formed that sound...which has continued through today's Black Keys...but Beck says Akron had a healthy underground music scene.

Beck says the "Akron Sound" is more local than most of what you'll find at the Rock Hall.

"We very much appreciate what the Rock Hall has done," Beck says, "but they're more impressed with more of the international acts, and the national acts and such. They have a small section of the Rock Hall of Northeast Ohio bands."

An "Akron Sound" "pop up" museum opened Thursday at Summit Artspace on East Market Street.
