Suspected War Criminal Deported

Written by

A former Akron man who immigration officials suspect to be a Bosnian war criminal has been deported from the country.

Cleveland.com reports that 57 year-old Ratko Maslenjack and his wife were flown to Belgrade over the weekend on a commercial flight.

Federal prosecutors say he was in the Bosnian Serb army, and was connected to a 1995 massacre that killed 8,300 Bosnian Muslims, and 30,000 women, children and elderly to flee the city.

Maslenjack was given an award in 2014 by Ohio treasurer Josh Mandel, years after he was convicted of lying on forms to gain refugee status.

Mandel's office says they weren't aware of his criminal status.
