Written by

Akron police releasing details of what led to a four-hour standoff with a SWAT team on Dennison Avenue this morning.

They say officers attempted a traffic stop on I-77 North about 2:30am, and when the driver refused to pull over, they gave chase--with speeds up to 80 miles an hour on the highway. During the chase, they say the driver called police dispatch, said he had a gun, and threatened to kill both himself and a passenger.

The driver then bailed from the car, after crashing through a chain-link fence on Ripley Avenue in Akron, and ran through back yards until he got to the 200 block of Dennison Avenue, where he barricaded himself in an abandoned house.

Four hours later, after fruitless pleas from police to turn himself in, they say they shot him with a non-lethal round, he surrendered, and was taken to the hospital.

Now, the suspect, 27 year old Steven Weddle, is under arrestand will be booked into the county jail.
