Summit County deputies say a man who tried to get into the Summit County Courthouse bearing a handgun and with a child in handcuffs will face a battery of charges for impersonating a police officer -- and they're hoping other children who may have taken part in a fake "Scared Straight Program" will come forward.

Deputies and Akrn police say 26-year old Christopher S. Hendon of Akron claimed he was a "Resource Officer" and dressed in "tactical police attire," including a weapon. He was stopped on April 6th, and a subsequent search of his home yielded a handgun, a fake firearm, handcuffs, a tactical vest and items with police labels. Charges range from weapons charges, criminal trespass and impersonating a peace officer. He's being held in the Summit County Jail.

(Summit County Sheriff) On April 6, 2017 the Summit County Sheriff's Office was contacted by court personnel in reference to an individual attempting to gain entry into a County Courthouse with a firearm. The suspect had a child in handcuffs with him and the suspect claimed to be a Resource Officer working as a part of a "Scared Straight Program."

The Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation with the assistance of the Akron Police Department. During the course of the investigation, investigators identified the suspect as Christopher S. Hendon. It was determined that on 4 occasions, Hendon attempted to gain access to a County Courthouse while dressed in tactical police attire and carrying a firearm. Each time, he had children in handcuffs and he portrayed himself as a "Resource
Officer." On one occasion, Hendon attempted to gain entry into the Summit County Jail with handcuffed children.

It was determined that Hendon is not a certified peace officer in the state of Ohio. On April 24, the Summit County Sheriff's Office and Akron Police Department executed a search warrant at Hendon's Akron residence. During the search, investigators seized a handgun, a simulated firearm, handcuffs, law enforcement equipment, a tactical vest, and items labeled with police insignias (photos attached). Christopher S. Hendon, age 26 of Akron was arrested and charged with (4) counts of Illegal Conveyance of a Deadly Weapon into a Courthouse (F-5), (4) counts of Criminal Trespass (M-4), and (4) counts of Impersonating a Peace Officer (F-3).

He was transported to the Summit County Jail.

Norton police issued a Missing Adult Alert for an 89-year old man yesterday after he failed to come home Monday night. Police say Allen Combs left his Marnie Street home in a white 2003 Ford F-150; the family says he suffers from Dementia and Alzheimer's.

(Missing Adult Alert) The Norton Police department is trying to find missing 89-year-old Allen Combs. Combs was last seen on April 3rd. He left his home on Mamie Street in Norton around 10 p.m.

He is described as:

• White male
• 89-years-old
• 5'9"
• 200 lbs.
• Gray hair
• Blue eyes.

He was last seen wearing jeans, a button-up long sleeve shirt, a baseball cap and boots. Combs also suffers from Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease and may be confused.

The vehicle involved is a white 2003 Ford F-150 with OH plate number DFE8933, his vehicle is a Lariat Edition. The vehicle show in the story is not the actual vehicle involved.

It didn't take Ohio's Board of Pharmacy to implement Governor Kasich's desire to cut down on opioid prescriptions. New rules were approved a week after Kasich announced efforts by the regulatory boards overseeing doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists to use "commonsense" limits on using opioids to treat acute pain. Supporters hope to cut the number of doses in Ohio by more than 100 million annually.

(Ohio Pharmacy Board) The State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy announced the approval of rules to help implement proposed limits on opiate prescriptions for acute pain. Announced by Governor Kasich and leaders of Ohio's healthcare regulatory boards last Thursday, the rules will support efforts by the Medical, Nursing and Dental Boards to place commonsense limits on the use of opiates for the treatment of acute pain.

"The Board is proud to play its role in helping to reduce opiate prescribing in Ohio" said Steven Schierholt, Executive Director of the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy. "It is estimated that the state could see an annual reduction of 109 million opiate doses once the new limits are in effect."

The rules adopted by the Board will require prescribers to include a diagnosis or procedure code on every controlled substance prescription. This information will then be entered into Ohio's prescription monitoring program, known as the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS), by dispensing pharmacies to monitor compliance with the limits.

The rules will follow the Board's standard rule adoption process, including input from stakeholders and the public.

For generations Bob Allen was a fixture on WAKR, as the co-host of the "Adam and Bob Show" from 1978 to 1991 that woke up Akron to later in his career as the solo morning host and program director on 1590 WAKR.

Bob retired from WAKR in 2010 and recalled an entire show broadcast from the Goodyear Blimp over Akron as one of his most memorable broadcasts. He was 77 years old.

Allen, who's real name was Gordon Van Waes, died yesterday according to family members. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

An Akron man is the latest to make the U.S. Marshal's Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive most wanted list. Police are looking for 26-year old Jevonte Walker for aggravated robbery for holding a woman at gunpoint as she was sitting in her car last month. He's also facing various parole violations.

Walker is hard to miss; he has tattoos on his neck and face, and is believed to be hiding out in the Akron area.

(US Marshal) The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force is offering a reward for information which would lead to the capture of fugitive Jevonte Walker.

Walker is wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Akron Police Department for aggravated robbery and having weapons while under disability. He is also wanted by the Adult Parole Authority for various parole violations. On March 12 of this year, Walker allegedly robbed a woman at gunpoint while she was sitting in her car. He then fled in a silver car.

Walker is a 26 year old black male standing approximately 5'08" and weighing 170 pounds. He has brown hair and browneyes. Walker also has numerous tattoos on his neck and face. Walker is believed to be hiding in the Akron area.

Springfield Township police found more than they bargained for during a traffic stop on Massillon Road.

Officers reported seeing a semi-automatic handgun within reach of the driver; it turned out to be a loaded .45 caliber weapon. Police also say they spotted what they thought was an active hand grenade in a rear side door and called the Summit County Bomb Squad.

It was determined the grenade wasn't active and no danger, but 20-year old Lane Spraggins faces felony charges and was booked into the Summit County Jail.

(Springfield PD) On 3/31/17 at approx. 12:21 AM, Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 2400 block area of Massillon Rd.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noticed a semi-automatic handgun in the back of the vehicle, within the drivers reach. Further investigation determined the firearm was a loaded .45 cal. semi-auto. Also located in the rear drivers side door was what appeared to the officers as an active hand grenade.

The Summit County Bomb Squad was called to the scene and determined the grenade to be inert and of no danger. The driver, 20 year old Lane Spraggins was charged with Improper Handling of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, a Felony of the 4th degree. Mr. Spraggins was booked into the Summit County Jail.

Akron's school board with a yes vote, following a vote taken Sunday by teachers on a new three-year contract. The deal provides for salary hikes ranging from one and a half to two and a half percent and also boosts the share of health care premiums workers pay.

(APS) At 8 p.m. tonight, the Akron Board of Education School Board voted in favor of a new, three year contract for its teachers, members of the Akron Education Association (AEA).Teachers voted in favor of the agreement Sunday evening. The three year agreement increases salaries:

1.50% retroactive to 7/1/16
2.25% effective 7/1/17
2.50% effective 7/1/18

The agreement also calls for employees to pay up to 2% more for health care premiums for the 17-18 school year and up to 3% more in the 18-19 school year.

Fan or no fan -- you have to feel sad when a member of the family leaves. And Keith Dambrot is a member of the Akron family, with deep roots in the community and University. The long-time basketball head coach is heading east, to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, for a reported seven year, seven million dollar deal.

Dambrot led the Zips to their winningest season in history, but fell to Kent State in the MAC title game; that loss scrubbed any hopes of a March Madness berth. Akron went two rounds before falling in the NIT.

A Streetsborog man is charged with manslaughter after a shooting over a dirty dirt-bike deal gone horribly wrong in Akron. 63 year old William Knight set up a meeting to buy a bike back after it had been stolen from his son-in-law; it quickly turned into a fight and Knight reportedly shot to death 24-year old Keith Johnson as Johnson was trying to flee on the dirt bike.  Knight says he was protecting his family. He was booked into the Summit County Jail.

What may make this even more heartbreaking is the victims of the dirt bike theft called police asking for help getting their stolen property back. APD Lt. Rick Edwards told News5 such calls aren't handled as the highest priority, so the family pursued recovery on their own.

(Akron PD)  Shortly before 8:00pm Monday, officers responded to a shooting in the 700 block of Danmead Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 24 year old male lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

On February 4, 2016, a 40 year old male from Annapolis Avenue in Akron reported a Yamaha dirt bike stolen from his unlocked garage. The male then noticed his dirt bike for sale on a social media site. The male made several attempts through social media to contact the person attempting to sell the Yamaha dirt bike. After several attempts, the male was finally able to meet up last night on Danmead Avenue.

The male took his 63 year old father-in-law and his wife. The male got into a verbal altercation with the 24 year old male trying to sell the dirt bike. The argument was over the dirt bike being stolen, and who owns the dirt bike. During the altercation, the 40 year old male grabbed onto the dirt bike. The 24 year old male tried to flee the area on the dirt bike and started to drive right for the 40 year old male. The father-in-law then pulled out a handgun and shot the 24 year old male on the dirt bike.

Detectives arrested the father-in-law, William M. Knight, 63, of Lady Catherine Street in Streetsboro, Ohio. Knight was charged with involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault and booked into the Summit County Jail.
