The shelves at Akron's West Point Market, once stocked with gourmet foods and specialty items, now sit empty.

"It's a bit of a shock." said West Point Market CEO Rick Vernon. "As long as I've been here they've always been full. Now they're empty."

Whole Foods will soon be replacing West Point Market and a developer is expected to build two other retail buildings on the property. That marks the end of an era for the West Market Street location.

West Point is planning to close its doors on New Year's Eve, but that could change depending on when they sell out.

"We started the discount sale on Saturday and it was so overwhelming."

Vernon said there are plans in the works to open a temporary store in Montrose in February until they find a new and permanent location in the area. The temporary location could open as early as the end of February.

The company will keep customers updated on the final hours at the West Market location on its Facebook page.

A 32-year-old man is dead after authorities say he barricaded himself inside a Coventry Township home Sunday night.

Summit County Sheriff's Inspector Bill Holland said Ryan Perkins of New Franklin was found with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a four-hour standoff.

"Our dispatch center received a call from a woman who said her 32-year-old husband was walking around outside in the yard of a Coventry Township residence with a rifle in his mouth," said Holland.

According to deputies, the man was reportedly making threats to harm himself and law enforcement inside the East State Street house.

Deputies were able to get in the home through a bedroom window to safely bring the mother and a child outside. Authorities tried to communicate with Perkins, but were unsuccessful and later found him on a couch with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

For more than 70 years, Haven of Rest Ministries has opened its doors on Christmas Day to serve dinner to hundreds of people in need.

But if you ask Executive Director Jeff Kaiser, he'll tell you it's more than just a hot meal.

"We really want to get to know the individual one-on-one," said Jeff Kaiser, executive director of Haven of Rest. "So our goal is always to make that connection even though we might have 200 or 240 people staying down here a night."

Whether someone is homeless, hungry or alone on Christmas Day, Haven of Rest spends the holiday preparing a fresh meal for hundreds of individuals and families around the Akron area. Each guest also received a bag of toiletry items and a Christmas stocking filled with treats.

"A lot of these people are very discouraged and there are a lot of hardships in their life. So we want to try to encourage them and offer them hope."

55-year-old Christopher Lemonte Lockett is no stranger to Haven of Rest Ministries. Several years ago, Lockett walked into Haven of Rest looking for shelter. On Friday morning, he returned to spend the holiday spreading a message of hope and strength.

"We damaged, but not done," said Locket. "That's why I'm here, to send that message."

Lockett said his mother passed away when he was just 18-year-old after battling alcoholism. He was left to take care of his siblings and later found himself battling the same addiction.

Lockett said Haven of Rest became his home where he could gain strength from the people who he now calls family.

"Everything that I've asked them for, they've never let me down. It's a beautiful place."

The Akron-Summit County Library is offering a new online service to access books, movies, and music. The library has teamed up with Hoopla, described as a Netflix-like online service, to offer users 24/7 online and mobile access to the library.

"We do intend to do a lot more with digital to make library accessible," said Collection Development Coordinator Val Sherman. "No matter where you are, we'll be there for you."

There's a checkout limit for library card holders -- just 10 items per month, but there are no fines since the items automatically return after the checkout period has ended.

"You can have a video for about three days and it'll just automatically return. You won't have to worry about fines."

The Akron-Summit County Library is just one of dozens in Ohio that have partnered with the new digital service.

An employee at Our Lady of the Elms in Akron is facing a sexual battery charge after he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports Jeffrey Peterson, 28, was fired from his job as an IT coordinator at the private, all-girls Catholic school after school officials learned of the accusations and reported it to Akron police.

Peterson is being held in the Summit County Jail and has a court appearance scheduled on Monday.

A 29-year-old Cuyahoga Falls man is facing drug trafficking charges after detectives followed up on a search warrant and found psychedelic mushrooms in a Stone Street house.

Summit County Sheriff's deputies found a Psilocybin Mushroom grow operation, including about a pound of the controlled substance, three handguns and a loaded shotgun.

Jack Kennedy, 29, of Cuyahoga Falls, has been charged with drug trafficking and possession. He was booked into the Summit County Jail.

Additional charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

The winter season officially begins tonight, but the freezing temperatures and snowflakes are nowhere in sight.

"If you like mild temperatures and lots of rain, you're going to like the forecast, " said Meteorologist Richard Lewelling with the Weather Channel.

Temperatures are expected to reach near the 60s on Wednesday and stay above average through the rest of the year.

"In fact, the coolest temperature I see, anywhere in the next 16 days, is a 40 degree low at night," said Lewelling. "So, pretty much, everyday between now and the end of the year we're going to be looking at 40s, 50s and even 60s in the forecast."

Lewelling predicts record-breaking temperatures across the country as the year comes to a close.

"We're going to see a lot of records fall by the wayside. I think you have to go way back in the record books to some of the strongest El Ninos to actually see weather like this, anywhere in the country. In fact, there's really nothing that compares to it."

To say that Akron firefighters were busy Friday morning is an understatement.

After battling an early morning house fire, firefighters made a quick turnaround to head over to an elementary school -- delivering hundreds of coats, hats and gloves to students.

Hundreds of students lined up in the cafeteria at McEbright CLC to make sure their new coat fit just right. Each coat was personalized with the students' name -- hats and gloves included.

Firefighter Matt Coleman organized this year's Operation Warm event.

"It gives all of us firemen a perspective on the meaning of Christmas and getting to come out and touch the community in a different way," said Coleman.

But before some firefighters could prepare for Friday's coat delivery, they were busy battling a house fire on Marvin Avenue in Highland Square.

"Four of these guys pulled a guy out a building and save him around 7:45 this morning. They went back, took a shower and now they're here handing out coats."

Just hours before, half of the firefighters at the event were battling a house fire on Marvin Avenue in Highland Square around 6 a.m. The blaze left one man with first and second degree burns. The man was found about eleven minutes after fire crews arrived had to be rescued. At least one other person escaped without help.

Mike Kranek was one of the firefighters who responded to the morning blaze, but he wanted to make he didn't miss out on this year's Operation Warm event.

"Some of these kids probably don't have much of a Christmas so if we can do a little something to make they're day better, that's what it's all about," said Kranek.

It was a morning filled with emotions for Kranek and his fellow firefighters.

"You're going a 100 miles a minute going to the fire, and then you deal with the fire and you're exhausted," said Kranek. "And then you go home to take an shower and you get rejuvenated because you know this is important."

An investigation is underway in a fatal officer-involved shooting in Kent early Thursday morning. Kent police say officers responded to a disturbance call shortly before 4 a.m. at a Virginia Avenue home.

NewsChannel 5 reports the cousin of 25-year-old Douglas Yon told police dispatchers that Yon refused to leave the house and was armed with a machete. She also reported that Yon was going to run toward officers and "make them shoot."

Kent police say four officers responded on scene. Police say Yon "engaged officers, wielding a machete." Officers fired an unknown amount of shots at the man. An ambulance was called in to administer first-aid, but Yon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities did not release the names of the officers involved or how many officers fired their weapons.

The Portage County Sheriff's Office is conducting an independent investigation and BCI is assisting with the collection of evidence.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
