The National Park System and local law enforcement are asking the public's help finding a suspect who assaulted a female runner in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park this past Sunday morning around 11:30.

According to the report (below), the woman was jogging on the Old Carriage Trail in Sagamore Hills when she was assaulted by a man wearing a ski mask, gloves, a dark zip-up jacket and work pants. He's described as a white male, average build and height. The victim was unharmed, according to police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the National Park's Investigative Services Branch.

Brecksville, Ohio – At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 17, an unknown person wearing a ski mask assaulted a female runner on the Old Carriage Trail in Sagamore Hills within Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The victim escaped without injury. Rangers are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect. He is described as a white male of average build and height, wearing a knit cap, dark ski gloves, dark zip-up heavy jacket and dark work pants. The clothing is not typical for a hiker or runner.

National Park Service rangers and local law enforcement officials are investigating this crime. Staff with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is working to clear snow and ice that's accumulated throughout the park since workers were furloughed more than a month ago.

With Friday's announcement of the continuining resolution to re-open the government for at least three weeks, the park expects to fully resume regular operations on Wednesday, though all trails and park restrooms are already open. In addition, the Boston Store Visitor Center is set to open Tuesday morning at 9:30.

(CVNP) Brecksville, OH – With the enactment of the continuing resolution, staff at Cuyahoga Valley National Park have already begun the process of opening facilities that will allow the park to fully resume regular operations on Wednesday, January 30. Due to significant winter weather during the lapse in appropriations, park staff is working to clear snow and ice from walkways and other facilities to ensure the safety of visitors. An Akron man has been acquitted of knowing about and assisting in the shooting of a woman in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park during the Fourth of July holiday in 2016. 

Raymond Moore III, 27, of Akron was acquitted by a federal jury in Ohio on Monday. He had been accused by the FBI, after an investigation, of driving Dezay Ely to the park all the while knowing that Ely had planned on shooting the woman that they were with. Ely did shoot the victim three times in the park and left her for dead along Akron-Peninsula Road back on the morning of July 3rd, 2016. She was found by hikers later that day along a horse trail. She had been missing for a few days prior to the shooting and had no identification, was unable to speak, and was left blinded by the shooting. 

Earlier this year, Ely pleaded guilty to attempted murder charges, firing a gun during a crime of violence, and being a felon in posession of ammunition. He is due for sentencing in federal court on August 24th.  

An arrest has been made in the shooting of a woman found seriously hurt in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

NewsChannel 5 reports that Dezay Martell Ely was charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm. That's according to the Cleveland office of the FBI.

Hikers found the woman in a field in the area of Akron-Peninsula Road.

Park rangers say she was shot three times in the head and face.

The FBI says Ely made a court appearance on Friday.

The woman found shot in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park earlier this month has been identified.

NewsChannel 5 reports that authorities have not yet released her name, and WKYC Channel 3 reports that she's said to be alive, but there's no other information about her current condition.

The victim was found in the park July 3rd off Bolanz Road, between Riverview Road and Akron-Peninsula Road, and was shot a number of times.

It's believed that the assault was an isolated incident.

UPDATE National Park Service officials now say the woman found assaulted in park property near Peninsula was shot multiple times and is still "unable to communicate" with investigators.

She was found Sunday morning after 9:00 in the morning. She's described as an 18-year old African-American woman, 110-120 pounds and around five feet, four or five inches tall. 

The NPS included an illustration of the type of clothing the victim of the assault was wearing. It's displayed on this page, above.

Rangers received the report of the assault victim found within park boundaries in Peninsula at 9:21 a.m. on Sunday, July 3. She suffered multiple gun-shot wounds. She is being treated at a local hospital and is unable to communicate with investigators.

The victim is an African American female. She is estimated to be about 18 years old, 110-120 pounds in weight, and 5'4" – 5'5" in height.

Clothing included:

Light blue jean shorts. The shorts were cut offs made from a pair of men's 32x30 Hollister skinny jeans
Plain khaki belt
Plain pink tank top
White Nike tennis shoes

The National Park Service is leading the on-going investigation with assistance from multiple agencies, including the FBI and Peninsula police department. At this time, it appears to be an isolated incident.

A woman clings to life, without a name, after she was discovered unconscious over the weekend in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Peninsula.

The Park Service says the woman was apparently the victim of an assault; she is described as African-American, about 18 years old, around 115 pounts and about 5'5". She was wearing light blue jeans shorts, a pink tank top and white Nike tennis shoes.

The National Park Service reports she was in critical condition at a local hospital, and the FBI is assisting with the investigation.

CVNP encompasses 33,000 acres along the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. Managed by the National Park Service, CVNP combines cultural, historical, recreational, and natural activities in one setting.

A woman is dead after walking too close to a moving Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train in Peninsula Sunday afternoon. Witnesses say she was seated at the Winking Lizard Tavern saw a tussle between an adult and a child acroiss the tracks in front of the Century Bike Shop. The railroad tracks don't have barriers in the stretch and most pedestrians follow the trail or parking lot on either side of the railroad right-of-way in the popular tourist destination.

The National Park Service's Mary Pat Doorley told NewsChannel 5 other visitors to the park were giving the woman alerts as she was heading back to the restaurant to stop because of the train, which was moving at between 10-15 miles per hour but the woman didn't heed the train's horn or the warnings and was struck and killed.

There were about 300 passengers aboard the train, which was held at the Peninusla depot for about four hours after the incident. Police are referring to the case as an accident.
