:17 - Ray is back from his day off, and he started his shortened week off talking to Dr. John Green, interim president at the University of Akron. Dr. Green recapped his State of the University address from last Friday, which included points about finances and the near and distant future as far as recruiting goes.

13:30 - Tuesday was the day the Oscar nominations were released ahead of next month’s Academy Awards. Our movie guy Scott Wynn has seen all these pictures, and he broke down who his favorites are for these awards.

20:35 - Speaking of actors and awards, Ray and the panel went over some of the most acclaimed actors of our time, as well as those who’ve appeared to be underrated over the years.

32:36 - The end of January starts tax season, and yes, we actually have a tax guy to defer to. Doug Klein drooped by the studio to answer tax questions, including the biggest one now: are we still getting our refund during the government shutdown?

G & G Fitness Coach of the Week: Jeff Twiddy of Louisville

For the first G&G Fitness Equipment Coach of the Week, Sam and Brad caught up with Jeff Twiddy, the new head football coach of the Louisville Leopards.

Twiddy said that the timing was right for him to take that job and work in a community that loves football.

"I'm pumped because it reminds me of Mogadore, and football is the most important thing there, and as a football coach you can't ask for anything more than that."

Coach Twiddy graduated from Mogadore High School and was previously coaching at Byesville before taking the job with the Leopards.

1590 WAKR Student Athletes of the Week Billie Johnson and Alexis Buchanan

This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Billie Johnson, a junior basketball player from East.

He says that working with his teammates and coaches is something he enjoys and pushes him to be better day in and day out.

“Sometimes it's hard because some people don't like to listen, but we always come together and figure out what to do," he said.

He says head coach of the Dragons Brian Dawson gets the most out of him and his fellow basketball players and puts them in a position to succeed on the court and off.

“He always gets the best out of us," Billie explained.

Coach Dawson says Billie’s work ethic is contagious and that having him on the court makes a difference for East.

“He’s one of our post players and we need him to get a double-double for us (points and rebounds) which he usually does,” Dawson said

“Not only is he a great player, but a great kid as well, he goes to practice, he maintains a 3.0 GPA, he does the morning announcements in the morning, and on top of all that he goes to work, so he’s a well rounded young man.”

The three year letterman is not only a leader on the court, but also a leader in his school community, being a part of the Student Council.

Our next Female Student Athlete of the Week is Alexis Buchanan, a senior basketball player from East.

She says she got into basketball from an early age and never looked back.

“ I used to look up to my male cousins when I was younger, I started playing when I was 8, and I wasn't too good, but I kept up with it and I'm on the varsity," she said.

In addition to being a basketball player and a three year letterwinner, she is also a co-captain on the cheerleading squad.

Her head coach on the basketball team Darryl Anderson says she is a leader on and off the court.

“Alexis us a high energy; high quality young lady,” Anderson said.

“Alexis does our dirty work and she is one of the top rebounders and defenders on the team.”

Off the court, Buchanan exhibits a lot of good characteristics that make her a good basketball player.

“She is a leader at school and she is a positive role model to all of her teammates,” Anderson continued.

“Alexis is a young lady that her coaches and teammates can rely on.”

Buchanan said that working with her coaches and teammates is something she truly enjoys.

“Every year I like coming across more people," she explained.

Upon graduation in the spring, Alexis plans on attending Bowling Green State University to major in pre-nursing.

We wish Billie and Alexis the best in all of their future endeavors.

15:35 - Last night at Brush High School, Tony had the pleasure of being a part of the Ball family. LaVar Ball was present in South Euclid-Lyndhurst to watch his son, LaMelo, and the entire SPIRE Academy squad take on Brush. Tony painted the picture of the atmosphere, with bordered on chaotic.

23:54 - Using nicotine to treat memory loss? Not as crazy as you’d think. Dr. Paul Newhouse, spokesperson and director from the Center for Cognitive Medicine at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center joined the show to talk about his studies.

:17 - Today’s Bride will be at the John S. Knight Center in Akron this weekend for a bridal show. Producer Tony is in the early stages of planning a wedding, and while he and his fiancee Leah are still looking for venues, it certainly won’t be a destination wedding.

8:20 - Former NFL player and local high school coach Jay Brophy came on the show to talk about a few football items. First, Ray and Jay talked about the hiring of Freddie Kitchens, then they mentioned the Rooney Rule and lack of minority coaches, and finally on this weekend’s games.

25:29 - Speaking of this weekend, Saturday is the annual TribeFest, held at the Cleveland Convention Center. Indians director of communications Curtis Danburg joined the program to preview the event.

30:42 - January 11th is the anniversary of the death of Paul Lynde, a favorite of Tony’s. As a tribute, they touched on the life and times of the hilarious star of Hollywood Squares.

1590 WAKR Student Athletes of the Week

This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is junior basketball player Lukas Swartz of Mogadore High School.

Lukas says the love of basketball came from his family growing up.

“My dad and my uncle played in college and I always grew up with a ball in my hands, and I've played ever since I was little," he said.

He says playing for his dad, Russ Swartz is a interesting and fun dynamic.

“I enjoy it a lot because he'll help me a lot, and at home, we talk basketball a lot."

The head coach had this to say about Lukas as a player and a person.

“Lukas is a hard worker both in the classroom and on the court,” Swartz said. “He wants to be the one best player and more importantly be the best person he can possibly be, and with that he is very team oriented and always puts the success of the team first.”

In addition to being a member of the basketball team, Lukas plays baseball, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Our next 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Hope Murphy, a junior basketball player from Mogadore High School.

She says that working with her coaches and teammates is a true joy as they get ready to compete on the hardwood.

“We have come a long way from where we started this year," Murphy said. "We're a young team."

Her head coach Jennifer Ritch said she is a true leader on and off the court.

“Hope is a fantastic student athlete that always gives 100% whether on the basketball court, cross country course or track,” she explains.

“She is a great leader and she brings tenacity and toughness to our team, always putting her teammates first and is a perfect representative of what a Mogadore Wildcat is all about.”

In addition to being a three sport athlete, Murphy is a member of the National Honor Society and Junior Akron Leadership.

“It's opened me up to a lot of different professions and situations that have been very eye-opening to me."

We wish Lukas and Hope the best in all of their future endeavors.

:17 - With this being the first full work week of the new year, some may have issues getting back into the rhythm of sleep. Is the goal eight hours a night? And can one make up sleep with naps? Those questions were answered by Valerie Linzey, a certified nurse practitioner with Cleveland Clinic-Akron General.

7:22 - Staying on the topic of sleep, the panel discussed their own sleeping habits, which may differ from others due to the early schedule. Tony mentions a serious of videos in the ASMR genre, which include a straight edge razor shaving a scruffy face, which makes Jeanne cringe.

12:34 - The smoke turned white in Berea yesterday, as the Browns finally have their head coach. Freddie Kitchens takes over due to his relationship with Baker Mayfield, but he now has to assemble a staff. Who’s on the short list?

23:38 - This particular segment began about McDonald’s adding more bacon to their menu, and that segued into oddball items one puts on food from family traditions. A few callers chimed in with their own funky sandwiches, many of which included peanut butter as a main ingredient.

:17 - President Donald Trump addressed the nation in primetime last night on the dangers of illegal immigration along the southern border. Dr. David Beer is a professor of political science at Malone University, and he joined Ray to recap both Trump’s speech and the counter address from Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.

9:16 - So how safe is the border? Tim Dimoff from SACS Consulting came on to discuss national security measures.

15:50 - And what about immigration in general? Farhad Sethna is a local immigration attorney, and he shared his thoughts on Trump’s rhetoric, which he’s been critical about these last two years.

22:00 - Changing things up a little bit, while still touching on security, Akron police chief Ken Ball stopped by the studio today. Among many topics, Chief Ball discussed the crime and overdose numbers in 2018, and what the communities can do in the new year.

40:40 - And finally, Dr. Joe Congeni, a sports medicine doctor at Akron Children’s Hospital, called in to talk some Browns. Not necessarily the X’s and O’s, but what the Browns have to do to ensure the health of rookie Denzel Ward, who suffered two concussions to end his season early.

1590 WAKR Student Athletes of the Week Romello Pacely and Akilah Primm North HS

This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Romello Pacely, a junior basketball player from North High School.

Romello says he got into basketball at an early age and stuck with the game when he got to high school.

“I got into it from my brother," he said. "I always looked up to him, so I liked the game of basketball."

The junior letterman says he, his teammates and coaches are determined to work hard, hold themselves accountable, and change the culture at North.

“He (Coach Marc Smith) motivates us every day, always pushes us to be better," Romello explained.

In addition to being a basketball player, Pacely maintains a 3.3 GPA and works hard in the classroom as well as the court.

His coach Marc Smith talked about his work ethic and how he’s developing as a player and a person.

“Romello is a young man who has worked very hard in the classroom and on the court, “ Smith said. “He hasn't allowed his limitations to dictate who he is as a person. “

We are proud of what he has accomplished in the classroom and look forward to watching his development over the next couple of years.”

Our next Female Student Athlete of the Week is Akilah Primm, a senior basketball player from North High School.

She says she got the competition bug from her sister, Amani who plays college basketball at Tri-C.

Primm says that by her sister earning that college scholarship, it pushes her to do the same.

“She was playing when we were younger and it became fun to me," Akilah said. "It makes me want to go (to college) and be with her."

As a captain and one of the key cogs for North, she knows that getting the best out of her teammates is one of the most important things she can do for her team.

Her coach Shermaine Meadows talked about her leadership on and off the court.

Off the court, she has the same drive and determination.

“Akilah has helped change the culture here at North high school with a high level of excellence and competitive spirit that transcends the court,” Meadows said.

“Akilah volunteers at the haven of rest and churches around the city. She carries a Gpa of 3.5 One of the most coachable kids I’ve experienced.”

Ray and Tony chatted about their lives and brought up some fun facts.

6:32 - It’s day two of Ray’s meetings with the local mayors. Today, Barberton mayor Bill Judge called into the show to recap 2018 and look ahead to 2019, specifically how the Magic City can rebound after losing their largest employer.

16:36 - While it seems like people never eat at home anymore, the numbers for chain restaurants have gone way down in 2018. Eaters seem to be abandoning the chains and the sports bars and heading toward the ethnic-themed restaurants.

28:50 - During our Question of the Day, which was about former Cleveland Browns quarterbacks who threw the most touchdowns, Ray and Tony got into yet another discussion about who the team should hire as head coach.

1590 WAKR Student Athletes of the Week Emily Andrassy and Jackson Carlson

his week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Emily Andrassy, a senior basketball player from Stow-Munroe Falls High School.

Emily says she started playing basketball from an early age, and has enjoyed the game ever since.

“My parents are very athletic, but I’ve always been athletic and I enjoyed playing outside with my neighbors,” she said.

As a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain both junior and senior year, Emily said that even though she can motivate her teammates vocally, she mostly leads by example on the practice floor, and on game day.

"I probably lead more by example, but I try to be more vocal, but it’s all about coming to practice and working hard.”

Her head coach Bob Podges had some great words for Andrassy and what she brings to the court.

"Emily is the heart and soul of our team," he said. "She's our best defender with an oustanding competive spirt."

The leadership qualities that she displays on the court also are on display off the court as Andrassy participates in the Freshman Mentorship program, something she takes a great deal of pride in.

Upon graduation in the spring, Emily plans on attending Kent State University.

Our next Male Student Athlete is Jackson Carlson, a senior basketball player from Stow High School.

He said he too fell in love with the game of basketball from an early age.

"My dad put a basketball in my hand since I before I can remember, and I’ve always been around the sport and loved it,” he said.

As a two-sport athlete for Stow (basketball and baseball), Carlson says he enjoys being with his teammates and working with them towards a common goal.

Coach Dave Close, the longtime coach of the Bulldogs, said that Jackson has grown as a player and as a person.

"He is a young man who has worked very hard to improve as a player and as a junior, he did not receive a lot of playing time. But he rolled up his sleeves and worked hard
the entire off-season to become a better and more well-rounded player," he said.

He also works hard off the court as well to become a more well-rounded person as well.

"He too has volunteered at Open M and has volunteered in the summer helping to teach youngsters
the game of basketball," Close said.

Carlson plans on majoring in education when he attends college in the spring, He says helping youngsters is something he's really interested in.

"I always liked being around students and want to coach as well,” he explained.

We wish Emily and Jackson the best in all of their future endeavors.

1590 WAKR Student Athletes of the Week: Imani Jackson and Addison Singletary

This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Imani Jackson, a senior basketball player from Buchtel High School.

Jackson says the team dynamics are strong, an aspect of playing at Buchtel she enjoys.

“We have fun when we're at practice," Jackson explains. "The girls are fun, we're laughing throughout practice, even though we're out of breath," she said with a laugh.

Her head coach Brian Neugebauer says Imani is an integral part of the team for the Lady Griffs.

“She is a leader that has become vocal and assertive over time,” he said.

“She has a high work ethic and through that work has improved all aspects of her game.”

Neugebauer says that leadership and and overall drive to excel carries over

away from the court.

“Imani is in the Nursing Program at Buchtel CLC, maintains an accumulative GPA of 3.8, scored a 24 on her ACT & is an overall outstanding individual.”

Our next Male Student Athlete of the Week is Addison Singletary, a junior basketball player from Buchtel.

He transferred from Kenmore-Garfield High School after spending two years there, and his new teammates at Buchtel embraced him from the start before the season even began.

“They were very welcoming and it's been a great experience," he said.

His coach, Matt Futch, a 2002 Buchtel graduate said Singletarty is a great young man on and off the court.

“He is a tremendous kid who has an unbelievable work ethic in the classroom and on the court,” Futch explains.

“He is a very coachable young man and a joy to be around. “

"Addy" holds a 3.5 GPA currently and says one of the highlights from his time at Buchtel was helping with the youth clinic earlier in the year.

We wish Imani and Addison the best in all of their future endeavors.

:17 - Victoria Lorenzen isn’t much different from a normal high school junior, except one major difference: she’s an airplane pilot. Her parents are both pilots, and Akron Public Schools and Firestone CLC has allowed her fulfill her dreams. She spoke of her passion in the studio with Ray.

9:21 - Everyone have their Christmas tree decorated? The panel talked about their trees, either their current ones or trees from their youth. Lots of tinsel, garland, and even bubble lights!

16:24 - Tim Dimoff is the president and CEO of SACS Security, and he talked about how firms like his would help find missing persons.

27:19 - Well, is Corey Kluber heading west or no? Will the Indians be active in free agency? Tribe broadcaster Jim Rosenhaus answered those questions to the best of his ability.
