Another Summa Shakeup

A major leadership shakeup over at Summa Health going on now...with two top positions eliminated, and people filling those posts losing their jobs.

The Beacon Journal reports that the hospital, which has been through months of controversy following the abrupt replacement of their Emergency Room physicians group, and subsequent loss of acreditation for the ER Resident training program---is attempting to "remove layers of management, increase efficiency, and maintain high standards for quality, safety and operations."

That, according to a memo sent out to staff yesterday morning by Summa's Interim CEO, Dr. Cliff Deveny. He tells the newspaper it's "totally inaccurate" to link the controvery surrounding the emergency room earlier this year to the changes that eliminate the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Medical Officer positions.

COO Valerie Gibson was close to former CEO Dr. Thomas Malone, while CMO Dr. Vivian von Guenigen was heavily criticized for a potential conflict of interest because her husand headed U.S. Acute Care Solutions, the company Summa replaced it's existing core of emergency room staff with in January. Neither are expected to remain in other capacities with the hospital system.

Rocksino Gets Gas

The Hard Rock Rocksino is growing -- into the gasoline business. Not only slots, concerts and dining but now a Rockstop Gas and Wash, a gas station and car wash specifically branded to the Hard Rock. Construction starts this month and should be wrapped up by mid-September.

- - -

(Hard Rock Rocksino) Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park announced plans to open ROCKSTOP GAS & WASH, a new Hard Rock branded and first of its kind, state-of-the-art gas service station and car wash, as well as the addition of a third gaming and smoking patio, bolstering the Rocksino's economic impact in Northeast Ohio and enhancing its Players Club benefits and unique amenities. The two property enhancements equate to a more than $5 million investment.

Construction on ROCKSTOP GAS & WASH, started in early May with a planned completion date in mid-September, 2017. Construction on the new gaming and smoking patio is underway with an expected completion date in early June. The projects are expected to generate close to 100 construction jobs and over 35 new permanent jobs.

"On behalf of our owner Brock Milstein and Hard Rock International, we're proud to announce these exciting new economic investments in our hometown," says Mark Birtha, President Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park. "We are committed to growing our property in a way that provides our customers, and our employees, unique experiences and unparalleled value. And, at the same time, reinvests in our local community to create employment and additional benefits to the overall economy."

According to Birtha, members of the Rocksino's Rock Star Rewards loyalty program and company employees will receive a discount on their gas purchases and car washes and may use their points to redeem services. "The Hard Rock's latest expansion shows the company's continuing commitment to the Village of Northfield and gives visitors another reason to patronize the Hard Rock property and the Village." says Jesse Nehez, Mayor, Northfield Village.

ROCKSTOP GAS & WASH will be located on the Northwest side of the Rocksino along Northfield Rd. (Rt. 8). The entire site will occupy 45,000 sq. feet including a 3,500 sq. foot retail/car wash building and have six doublepumps
– a total of 12 handles to dispense gas. The pumps will feature Hard Rock style lighting effects and LED TV's, allowing for the broadcast of music videos and commercials.

"ROCKSTOP GAS & WASH is the first Hard Rock branded gas station and car wash – right here in Northfield, Ohio," says Birtha. "Once again, Northeast Ohio sets the bar high in terms of launching new products and services. That's happening here in Northfield will become the prototype for similar amenities at Hard Rock International properties world-wide. "While it's important to add amenities, it's critical to refresh the ones we have. Over 3 million people visited the Rocksino last year. It's imperative that we continually reinvent, as well as expand our property to exceed customer expectations. And, that's our commitment to Northeast Ohio," says Birtha.

The new gaming and smoking patio will be located adjacent to the Rocksino's Constant Grind restaurant, a 24/7 bistro, increasing the total number of games at the Rocksino from 2,265 to more than 2,300.

Cosgrove To Step Down At Clinic

A major changing of the guard at the Cleveland Clinic, as Dr. Toby Cosgrove announces he will be "transitioning" from the job as CEO after almost 13 years at the top. He'll continue as an advisor when he's out as CEO later this year. The search is on for a replacement.

- - -

(Cleveland Clinic) After nearly 13 years as president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic – which has grown into an $8 billion health system with multiple locations in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Canada, Abu Dhabi, and, in 2020, London – Toby Cosgrove, M.D., announced at a staff meeting today that he has decided to begin a succession process to transition out of the top executive role later this year.  The Governance Committee has asked Dr. Cosgrove to continue on in an advisory role.

Over Dr. Cosgrove’s tenure, Cleveland Clinic’s expansion locally, nationally, and internationally has positioned the institution for a strong future as its revenues have grown from $3.7 billion in 2004 to $8.5 billion in 2016. It has become Ohio’s largest employer with over 50,000 caregivers and a global leader in clinical outcomes, patient experience, innovation and wellness, ranking No. 2 in the nation last year by U.S. News & World Report.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of an extraordinary and forward-thinking organization that puts patients at the center of everything we do,” Dr. Cosgrove said. “Cleveland Clinic’s world-class reputation of clinical excellence, innovation, medical education and research was created and will be maintained by the truly dedicated caregivers who work tirelessly to provide the best care to our patients.”

By making leadership development a top priority, Cleveland Clinic has developed a deep, talented pool of physician-leaders who are ready to take on executive roles such as hospital presidents, executive administrative roles, leaders of major initiatives across the enterprise, and more.

“The goal of any leader is to leave an institution better than you found it. Without a doubt, Toby has done that,” said Cleveland Clinic Board of Directors chairman Bob Rich. “Our world-class reputation has only grown over the past 13 years, as he has led Cleveland Clinic through a period of dramatic growth and worldwide expansion.”

His successor will be jointly selected by the Board of Directors and Board of Governors and that process is expected to be concluded in 2017. The Governance Committee has asked Dr. Cosgrove to continue on in an advisory role.

In keeping with its model as a physician-led institution, Cleveland Clinic’s new president and CEO will be a practicing physician.

Before becoming CEO in 2004, Dr. Cosgrove was a cardiac surgeon for nearly 30 years, performing 22,000 operations and earning an international reputation for expertise in valve repair. As president and CEO, Dr. Cosgrove has driven major initiatives that have gained international recognition, created best practices in healthcare, focused on patient outcomes and promoted patient experience.

Cleveland Clinic has grown steadily between 2004 and 2016: the number of physician-scientists has doubled from 1,800 to 3,400; total visits increased from 2.8 million to 7.1 million; research funding grew from $121 million to $260 million; and construction has changed the face of Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, with the addition of the Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute, the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute, the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center, the Tomsich Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute and, currently under construction, a health education campus in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Cosgrove’s leadership has emphasized patient care and patient experience, including the re-organization of clinical services into a patient-centered model of care designed around organs and diseases rather than doctors. He coined the phrase “Patients First” to be the guiding principle for all caregivers and hired the first Chief Patient Experience Officer to focus on the experiential, physical and emotional aspects of patient care, now a growing norm in hospitals today. Cleveland Clinic is considered one of the country’s “Best Workplaces in Health Care” in Fortune and a “World’s Most Ethical Company” by the Ethisphere Institute.

Dr. Cosgrove has launched major wellness initiatives for patients, employees and communities, including: banning smoking on all Cleveland Clinic campuses; adopting a policy to not hire smokers; offering employees free memberships to Weight Watchers and gyms; ridding the cafeteria of fried foods; opening weekly farmer’s markets in the summer and fall; and creating an employee health insurance program that offers discounts for physical activity or for enrollment in a disease management program.

Anchored in Cleveland on its 165-acre main campus, Cleveland Clinic’s name is well known around the world for its clinical excellence. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi opened in May 2015; Cleveland Clinic Toronto just celebrated its tenth year; and Cleveland Clinic London is expected to begin seeing patients in 2020. Locally, Cleveland Clinic recently opened a new state-of-the-art hospital in Avon. And in Weston, Fla., Cleveland Clinic Florida is constructing a new five-story tower.

Under Dr. Cosgrove’s innovative leadership, he also envisioned “same-day” medical appointments that opened access to 1.5 million same-day appointments for patients in 2016. He also is committed to new ways to allow patients to access care anytime, anywhere, with walk-in appointments, virtual visits by phone or tablet, and more.

Dr. Cosgrove received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, completing his clinical training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Brook General Hospital in London. His undergraduate work was at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.

He was a surgeon in the U.S. Air Force and served in Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam, as the Chief of U.S. Air Force Casualty Staging Flight. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal.

Joining Cleveland Clinic in 1975, Dr. Cosgrove was named chairman of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery in 1989. Under his leadership, Cleveland Clinic’s heart program was ranked No. 1 in America for 10 years in a row by U.S. News & World Report, a distinction that has remained for 22 successive years. He has published nearly 450 journal articles, book chapters, authored “The Cleveland Clinic Way” and developed 17 training and continuing medical education films. As an innovator, Dr. Cosgrove has 30 patents filed for developing medical and clinical products used in surgical environments.

Dr. Cosgrove is a 2016 Fortune Businessperson of the Year (#14), has topped Inside Business’s “Power 100” listing for Northeast Ohio, is highly ranked among Modern Healthcare’s “100 most powerful people in healthcare” and “most powerful physician executives,” and is an inductee of the Cleveland Medical Hall of Fame.

Dr. Cosgrove has been consulted by successive presidential administrations, serving on the Veterans Administration Commission on Care (2015) and the current White House Strategic and Policy Forum.

Drug Drop-Off Day Saturday

Tomorrow marks the national Prescription Drug Take Back Day where residents can safely get rid of unused or expired prescription drugs, especially opioid painkillers to keep them out of the hands of addicts.

It's a no-questions-asked service and free; locations include local police stations and event Metro RTA's visitors parking lot. Drop-offs will be accepted between ten in the morning and two in the afternoon.

- - -

(Senators Portman & Brown) Addictive prescription drugs that are thrown away or left untended on shelves and in drawers at home are often stolen and either abused or sold by family members and visitors. That’s why the DEA and thousands of its state, local, and tribal law enforcement and community partners are holding another Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, April 29, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M., at over 5,000 sites around the country, including more than 270 sites in Ohio. The service is free of charge, no questions asked. Both U.S. Senators are backing the effort as a way to support taking prescription painkillers out of household medicine cabinets.

America is experiencing an epidemic of addiction, overdose, and death due to abuse of prescription drugs, particularly opioid painkillers. More than 6.4 million Americans age 12 and over -- 2.4 percent of the population -- abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health released last fall. That’s more than abuse cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, and methamphetamine combined. Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, eclipsing deaths from motor vehicle crashes or firearms. The majority of prescription drug abusers report that they obtain their drugs from friends and family, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Galonski Wins 35th District Nod

A panel of Ohio statehouse Democrats picking Summit County Magistrate Tavia Galonski to fill the unexpired term of 35th District State Representative Greta Johnson. The screening committee recommendation must still be approved by the full slate of Ohio House democrats but that's expected to be a formality.

- - -

(Ohio Democrats) State Rep. Jack Cera (D-Bellaire) today announced the House Democratic screening panel tasked with finding a replacement for the 35th House district seat, previously held by Greta Johnson (D-Akron), has recommended Tavia Galonski to fill the remainder of Johnson's term.

The panel recommended Galonski after interviewing eight applicants for the 35th House district seat.

"Among the many qualified applicants, Tavia's leadership and experience make her the best possible representative for the thirty-fifth district," said Cera. "We are confident constituents will have a real advocate for their future in Mrs. Galonski."

Galonski, a magistrate in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas, has served the state in a legal capacity for over 15 years. Formerly appointed as magistrate of the county's domestic relations court, she currently serves as magistrate of the county's juvenile court.

"I believe my professional experience will enable me to be an effective advocate in Columbus for the families, children and working people of the thirty-fifth," said Galonski. "Everyone deserves to be heard, but too often Ohio children and families feel like they do not have a voice at the Statehouse. I look forward to working with Democrats and Republicans to promote innovative policies that put people back to work, improve our education system, instill fairness in our justice system, and create good-paying jobs."

In addition to her extensive background in public service, policy and legal issues, Galonski is also a member of Leadership Akron, The University of Akron School of Law Alumni Association, the Barristers and the Ohio State Bar Association. She was appointed to serve as the juvenile court representative for the Summit County Fatherhood Initiative, which earned her the 2014 Ohio Fatherhood Center Achievement Award.

Galonski received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Emory University in Atlanta. After attending the University of Nottingham in the U.K., she completed her Juris Doctorate at the University Akron School of Law in 1995. Galonski worked as a judicial attorney in Summit County for several years before being appointed as a magistrate.

The screening panel that recommended Galonski was led by Democratic Caucus Dean Rep. Jack Cera (D-Bellaire) and included Reps. John Rogers (D-Mentor-on-the-Lake), Kristin Boggs (D-Columbus), Assistant Minority Leader Nick Celebrezze (D-Parma) and Assistant Minority Whip Emilia Sykes (D-Akron).

The screening panel's recommendations will be presented to Democratic legislators on the House floor Wednesday, May 10 for an official vote of appointment.
