Ray Horner Podcast - 7/11/2019

:19 - The late Jim Bouton was a former Yankee pitcher who had fallen on hard times with injuries, so he turned to becoming an author. His 1970 book, Ball Four, caused a stir because he told many tales out of school about his fellow players, and he was essentially blackballed by the league. Ray and Tony talked about the legacy of Ball Four, which related in a lot of ways 35 years later with Jose Canseco’s Juiced.

10:09 - The Bridgestone Senior Players tournament is going on at Firestone Country Club, and many spectators will look at the greens with jealousy, wishing their lawns looked that good. Our master gardener Jeanne Poremski talked about manicuring lawns in this warm summer, and she answered listener questions, as well.

:19 - 1992 (and 1996) presidential candidate Ross Perot passed away Tuesday at the age of 89. Ray, Jeanne, and Tony talked about the legacy of Perot, mainly how his run in ’92 changed the course of politics.

8:29 - A Michigan-based company Beaumont Health has acquired Summa Health System, though Summa will keep its name. Dr. Cliff Deveny, president and CEO at Summa, talked to Ray about what will change and what will remain the same during and after this transition.

16:32 - Northeast Ohio has been abuzz of late, from the MLB All-Star Game to the Bridgestone Senior Players this week, which leads into next week’s All-American Soap Box Derby. President of the derby, Mark Gerberich, stopped by the studio to preview the events ahead of next week.

Bob DiBiasio from the Tribe gave us a preview of how busy he and his compadres at Progressive Field have been. 15:12 - Volunteers have been a huge part of any golf tournament at Firestone Country Club. Barb Dietrich has been a fixture there for sixty years, and she joined Ray to talk about her years at Firestone. 20:00 - We hear about box office blockbusters, but what about the worst box office bombs?

Ray Horner Podcast - 7/8/2019

:19 - It’s been nine years since LeBron James first left the Cleveland Cavaliers in favor of Miami, Florida. A lot has happened since then, from a 2016 championship to yet another exodus, this time to the Lakers, and now LeBron has to compete with some studs on the other side of his home arena. Ray and Tony talked about LeBron’s legacy since 2010, and how he’ll compete with the likes of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

9:41 - In addition to the MLB All-Star Game this week, it’s also time for the Bridgestone Senior Players tournament. John Anderson, executive vice chairman for Northeast Ohio Golf Charities, joined the show to talk about the impact the volunteers have each year to make sure the tournament goes off without a hitch.

16:58 - The July temperatures are heating up, and veterinarian Dr. Gary Riggs is here with tips for your pets. He talked about avoiding dehydration, and he spoke of the warning signs of limping.

:20 - Guest host Tony Mazur filled in for Ray on July 4th, and he opened the show talking about how Americans lack gratitude when it comes to celebrating a day like this. He brought up the recent demonstrations and attacks in Portland by the group Antifa on journalist Andy Ngo.

13:26 - Tony, like many other impressionable young men in the second half of the twentieth century, grew up on Mad Magazine. It was announced Wednesday night that Mad will soon be no more, after 67 years. Tony salutes the magazine and the great, iconic artists who’ve drawn for the publication since basically the beginning.

:19 - Nike was ready to release a shoe with the original United States flag created by Betsy Ross, but their spokesman and former NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, intervened, saying the flag represents racism and slavery. Ray, Tony, and Jeanne discussed this “controversy,” or lack thereof, and how it could be a publicity stunt in having folks talk about Nike again.

10:32 - There aren’t many Fourth of July movies out there, but Jaws was ranked the number one film for the holiday. That prompted Ray to bring up some fun facts about the summer blockbuster, which is celebrating its 44th anniversary.

:17 - A video on TMZ surfaced of Kareem Hunt being questioned by Cleveland police early Sunday morning. Witnesses have said not much occurred at the scene, but Ray and Tony still believe Hunt is a distraction and shouldn’t be out at bars when he’s suspended.

5:14 - Kevin Thomas from Akron AAA stopped by to share some July 4th weekend travel tips, as well as how the recent gas tax will play into summer trips.

12:21 - We’re one week away from the MLB All-Star Game at Progressive Field, and those involved are quite busy. Bob DiBiasio from the Indians joined the show to discuss how they’re preparing for the festivities.

19:25 - Tony is heading to Hershey, Pennsylvania next month to see the Backstreet Boys (not his choice), and Ray urges he and his fiancee to visit Hershey Park while they’re there.

Ray admits, however, that he sees MJ in a different light now that several accusations of improper behavior with children have gone public. 14:42 - Bob DiBiasio from the Cleveland Indians joined Ray to answer questions from the 1590 WAKR (and now on 93.5 FM) listeners. Those questions had to do with last night’s walkoff win over the Royals, Bobby’s favorite place to sit at Progressive Field, and his actual job description.

He talked to Ray about a slew of topics such as Iran and the United States’ strategy over it, the deportation of illegal immigrants, and the upcoming Democratic debates.

16:46 - Michael Gershe was involved in a car accident when he was just eight weeks old, with his mother being killed by a drunk driver. He has lived to tell his story through humor, and his mission is to educate others on the effects of impaired driving through his program and new book, The Magic of Life. He talked about his book on the air with Ray.

:17 - As of this interview, the sun is out and the flood waters in Barberton are beginning to retreat, but there is still a lot of work to do. Mayor Bill Judge provided an update on his city and how the community can help out.

7:01 - Darius Garland and Dyland Windler are your newest Cleveland Cavaliers. WAKR’s Kris Drew broke down last night’s NBA Draft, which saw Zion Williamson go first overall to the New Orleans Pelicans.

12:37 - Tony was a bit annoyed with a report out of baseball yesterday. The report, which would split the season for the Tampa Bay Rays in that they’ll play half their home games in St. Petersburg and the other half in Montreal.

20:25 - Another big weekend at the movies this weekend with Toy Story 4 looking to be the big blockbuster. Our movie guy Scott Wynn gave us a preview.

23:16 - And finally, our golf pro Dan Dauk shared some tips on hacking through the links with all this wet weather we’ve had.

:17 - The Indians are in the thick of a wild card race now, territory they haven’t treaded in in some years. Tribe GM Mike Chernoff joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to discuss the state of the team, the upcoming trade deadline, and the new style of baseball.

7:15 - The NBA Draft is Thursday night, and the Cavaliers are picking fifth. Will they stand pat or wheel and deal with other teams in a trade? The voice of the Cavs, John Michael, previewed the draft on the three-year anniversary of the 2016 championship.

:17 - There is still plenty of rain in the forecast this week, and the hardest hit as of Tuesday morning has been the Barberton area, which collects water like a fishbowl. Barberton mayor Bill Judge rejoined to the show to provide an update on his town, from the flooding on Barber Road to the residential streets.

7:00 - WAKR’s Kris Drew has returned to not just the studios, but the United States after some mission work in Haiti. He talked to Ray about what he saw in the country and how he was able to help.

12:24 - Just a few weeks away from the MLB All-Star Game, and those around Progressive Field have been busy preparing. Tribe VP Bob DiBiasio joined the program to talk about a setback with Bradley Zimmer, the upcoming trade deadline, and the Midsummer Classic.

20:26 - Tony watched Francisco Lindor’s home run travel 406 feet, which off the bat looked like a double in the gap. Tony and Ray touched on the alarming home run rates in baseball, where a player such as Hunter Renfroe could hit 50 home runs this season.

:17 - The big story this Monday morning was the massive amounts of flooding in southwestern Summit County. Copley roads got hit hard, and Barberton was under a flood watch on Sunday. Mayor Bill Judge talked about Barberton’s preventative measures and what roads are closed.

4:52 - Barber Road is one of the streets closed due to high water. Norton mayor Mike Zita provided some insight.

8:12 - Switching gears here to another hot topic on folks’ minds: CBD. Cleveland Clinic-Akron General’s Dr. Tim Brown joined the show to talk about the fact and fiction revolving around CBD, THC, hemp, and marijuana.

15:01 - A big trade in the NBA occurred with the Pelicans’ Anthony Davis heading west to join LeBron James with the Lakers. Ray and Tony touched on that move and why the Lakers, Knicks, and Bulls have not been sexy destinations for players this last decade.

20:57 - All-American Soap Box Derby president Mark Gerberich came on late in the show to discuss the three newest members of the derby hall of fame.

:17 - Today, June 6th, is the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The Ray Horner Show and WAKR (1590 AM, 93.5 FM) pay tribute to those who not only fought on the beaches of Normandy, but also anyone who has served in the armed forces. Ray took a look back at the importance of D-Day with Dr. Kevin Kern, professor of history at the University of Akron.

8:19 - June 6th is also Drive-In movie day, and the Akron area actually has a couple of them, in Wadsworth and Barberton. The morning show panel talked about the drive-ins not just being about the movie itself, but like a trip to Blockbuster Video back in the day, it was about an experience.

14:22 - Thursdays are when our master gardener Jeanne Poremski stops by to answer listener questions. This is her busy time of year, as master gardeners are giving tours and presentations.

8:21 - OTAs are underway in Berea, and head coach Freddie Kitchens is already annoyed with the local media over the Odell Beckham voluntary workout situation. Ray and Tony agree this probably isn’t a good look for a first-year head coach before training camp.

14:47 - The Indians took down the Twins with a nice 5-2 win on Tuesday, but can they keep it up since they’re 10.5 games behind Minnesota? Tribe broadcaster Jim Rosenhaus joined the program to touch on the state of the Indians, including updates on Bradley Zimmer and Mike Clevinger.

14:45 - Green mayor Gerard Neugebauer stopped by the studio this morning to talk about the usage of Narcan, the Nexus pipeline, and the city’s partnership with a town in Romania.

:17 - A recent study looks pretty bleak for America, as Millennials are not having kids at the rate of previous generations, and it could affect the economy. The two Millennials in the studio, Tony and Steffany, are both childless and weighed in.

6:45 - Today is the final day of the year from Akron Public Schools students. From the I Promise school to all the new career academies, David James has been quite busy, but he spared a few minutes in studio with Ray to recap the school year that was.

19:22 - Robert Mueller spoke on Wednesday, and many on the political left wonder if that will lead congress to go forward with an impeachment proceeding for President Donald Trump. Dr. David Beer, professor of political science at Malone University, reviewed Mueller’s press conference and the possibility of impeachment, which he admits may help Trump in 2020.

:17 - It’s a big couple of weekends in the Akron area with high school sports, and the focus is on Firestone Stadium coming up. Joey Arrietta, the proprietor of the classic ballpark, joined the show to talk about the softball tournament and what the plan is in case of rainouts. Ray also asked Joey about the future of the Akron Racers.

7:25 - The relief efforts continue in Dayton after the devastating tornadoes passed through the region. Jim McIntyre called in to discuss what the American Red Cross is doing to help those in Southwestern Ohio.

10:59 - Pizza Hut is giving themselves a facelift after dropping sales. Ray, Tony, and Steffany talk about chain pizza places in today’s world and what the future holds for them.

:17 - Sad news in the sports world coming out of Memorial Day weekend that Bill Buckner passed away at the age of 69. Even though he’s notoriously known for his error that ended Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, Ray and Tony talked about what a solid player Buckner was for the Dodgers and Cubs throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. 5:15 - The Indians’ Bob DiBiasio joins the program every Tuesday (yes, today is Tuesday), and he talked about Travis Hafner, more on Bill Buckner, and baseball being played at League Park again. 13:03 - The country of Nepal has seen an influx of tourism over the last few decades due to folks wanting to climb Mount Everest. In 2019, eleven people have already died trying to reach the summit, including two from America. 17:34 - Basketball is a two-armed game for most, but Kevin Atlas (Laue) defied the odds. His Believe in You Challenge is what it sounds like, believing in oneself and the powers that may come from within. Atlas joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to share his inspiring story.

:17 - Fans of Game of Thrones are still crowing over the series finale, which wasn’t up to many of their standards. That got the show talking about the best and worst series finales in TV history. The best, which include M*A*S*H, Cheers, and Tony’s favorite in Newhart, and the worst with Seinfeld and How I Met Your Mother.

8:57 - On the topic of TV shows, Ray began his Tuesday segment with the Indians’ Bob DiBiasio on his favorite shows. Bobby was also asked if he ever thought he would be the PR guy for his hometown team for over four decades.

16:23 - SACS Security and Consulting president and CEO Tim Dimoff joined the show to share his thoughts on what some deem today a “trigger-happy society."

21:03 - Continuing the discussion on violence, Summit County prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh stopped by the studio to talk about the increased bloodshed in our community. She is also holding free self defense classes for women.

:17 - The NBA Draft is happening on June 20th, and the Cleveland Cavaliers will have the fifth pick. John Michael is the radio voice of the Cavs, and he believes the team will have the chance to snag a solid player at that spot. Michael also talked about the hiring of John Beilein from the college ranks.

13:12 - There has been talk about increasing the NFL season by two games, but many have questioned if there are just too many NBA and MLB games. Dr. Joe Congeni deals with sports medicine at Akron Children’s Hospital, and he mentioned how the body can really break down playing in 82 NBA games or 162 baseball contests.

:17 - A legend in the comedy world passed away yesterday, as Tim Conway lost his battle with dementia. A native Northeast Ohioan, Conway made audiences double over in laughter for nearly 60 years. Ray and Tony shared their thoughts on the death of Dorf.

5:47 - With more on Tim Conway, writer Rich Heldenfels joined the show to talk about his interactions with him over the years when he wrote for the Akron Beacon Journal.

11:32 - The Carol Burnett Show reminded the panel this morning on variety shows from years past and why they were important.

16:32 - In other news, the United States’ trade war with China continues. Dr. David Beer, professor of political science at Malone University, educated the listeners on tariffs, and he touched on the current political climate.

:17 - We began Friday’s program talking about classic game shows and some of our favorites. Outside the staples such as Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, the panel mentioned some close to their heart, as well as others many have forgotten about.

6:35 - Speaking of game shows, Tony had the pleasure of speaking with a long-time kids and teen game show host Marc Summers, who is bringing his Double Dare Live through Akron on May 16th. Marc, who has hosted shows on the Food Network the last two decade, talked about the Double Dare nostalgia, and well as his battle with OCD.

19:46 - According to our movie guy, Scott Wynn, the girls are taking charge at the movie houses this weekend, from What Men Want to The Hustle.

23:06 - Since every day is a holiday these days, today is National Clean Your Room day.

Children and preteens with cable television in the 1980s and ‘90s had their eyes glued to the fledgling kids network Nickelodeon. Those kids are now well into their thirties, but have the opportunity to feel young again when Double Dare Live visits the Akron Civic Theatre on May 16th.

The long-time host of Double Dare, Marc Summers, was interviewed by WAKR’s Tony Mazur, who happens to fall into the category of nostalgia-loving thirty-somethings. Marc talked about his itch to enter the game show hosting business in the 1970s, as well as his other programs (What Would You Do?, Unwrapped), and his bouts with OCD that once crippled his career.

Coming off the heels of a successful 2018 tour, Double Dare Live has toured throughout the United States in 2019, and will wrap up in Morristown, Pennsylvania on May 19th.

:17 - Teen suicide is on the rise, and is the second-highest killer with teenagers behind accidents. Dr. Liz Menefee is with Child Guidance and Family Solutions, and she informed our listeners of the warning signs and the prevention of teen suicide.

7:44 - TV Guide released its funniest TV shows of all time, which includes Seinfeld, Cheers, Mary Tyler Moore Show, among others. The panel gave their favorite funny sitcoms and commented on others.

17:50 - Jeanne Poremski is our master gardener, and with the nicer weather, this is her time to shine. Jeanne talked about the plants flowering ahead of Mothers Day, and answered some questions on adding Roundup near vegetable gardens.

Ray Horner Podcast - 5/8/2019

:17 - The results from election day were in, and in Akron, there were some slight changes happening inside city council. But as for the mayoral primary, current mayor Dan Horrigan will continue his path toward reelection come November, and he joined Ray to recap Tuesday night.

6:04 - Akron Public Schools superintendent David James dropped by the studio to discuss a few topics, one of which is it being National Teachers Week. Ray asked David about school safety, off the heels of another school shooting in Colorado, and the success of the I Promise school.

15:02 - Not only is it National Teachers Week, but it’s also National Nurses Week, as well. Lorie Rhine is the chief nursing officer at Summa Health System, and she called into the show to talk about the field of nursing and how its grown in the last couple of decades.

19:55 - Getting back to school safety and the latest school shooting, SACS Security and Consulting president Tim Dimoff discussed it more in depth.

Akron Primary Election Results

Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan easily fended off his Democratic primary challenge from Greg Harrison, winning with more than 78 percent of the vote.

He will face Republican Josh Sines, in the November election.

It's going to be a whole new ballgame on Akron City Council, after yesterday's primary election.

Long-time city council members Marilyn Keith, Veronica Sims, Bruce Kilby,  Bob Hoch, and Zack Milkovich are out.

Jeff Fusco, Linda Omobien, Rich Swirsky, Margo Sommerville, Russ Neal, Mike Freeman, Donnie Kammer and Tara Mosely-Samples won their primary challenges.

New to council heading into the general election in November on the Democrat side, are Ginger Baylor, who will be running for an at-large seat, Phil Lombardo, who beat Bruce Kilby in Ward 2, Brad McKitrick who beat Bob Hoch in Ward 6, Shammas Malick who beat Curtis T. Walker, Sr., in ward 8, and Sharon Connor, in Ward 10, who beat Zack Milkovich.

On the Republican side, Cynthia Blake, Henry Todd, and Monica McNatt will be vying for a council at large seat. Brenda Rongone Costarella, Todd Kleintop, Michael Downey, and Jackie Williams ran unopposed, and will face Democratic challengers in wards 1, 2, 3, and 6.

:17 - For no reason in particular, the morning show reminisced over one of television’s most iconic sitcoms, The Andy Griffith Show. Ray brought up some fun facts on the show’s classic characters.

5:20 - Today is election day for the primaries in Ohio. Secretary of State Frank LaRose called into the show to discuss what’s to come for the primaries and how the voter turnout may look by the time the polls close.

10:42 - Tuesdays during the baseball season means Tribe VP Bob DiBiasio arrives on the program to answer some questions. Those questions included the outfield woes, the struggles of Carlos Gonzalez, and the offseason trade of Yandy Diaz.

19:08 - President Trump has made improving trade with China a sticking point during his presidency, but now he’s drawing a line in the sand by threatening tariffs, which caused markets to decrease.

Ray Horner Podcast - 5/6/2019

:17 - The weekend against the Mariners began well for the Indians with two late-inning wins, but a 10-0 drubbing on Sunday caused some to scratch their heads. Ray and Tony recapped the Indians’ offensive woes, specifically how Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, and Jason Kipnis are all hitting under .215.

6:02 - Dr. Gary Riggs is our veterinarian who stops by weekly, and he talked to Ray about issues like teeth and gum disease, among others.

10:04 - If you are an Akron resident, did you receive a political robo call from either current mayor Dan Horrigan or former mayor Don Plusquellic? Many did and weren’t happy, and that includes Linda Omobien. The At Large council member talked about a tension between the former mayors, as well as the tensions inside the council chambers.

14:30 - Ray was joined by a couple of former NFL players on this Monday morning. First, Akron native and former Cleveland Brown Frank Stams came in studio, and Bears and Steelers QB Mike Tomczak called into the show. Both Frank and Mike our out to help NFL alumni through their retirement plans, especially in a sport where many careers are finished by age 30.

Mainly movies not named Avengers: Endgame. 13:03 - Executive director of the ADM Board here in Akron, Jerry Craig, stopped by the studio to thank the frontline workers and first responders for those in this opioid epidemic. Jerry also talked about how the community has come together in these last five years to address this sad situation. 19:21 - Social security is on the minds of many, and News 5’s Jonathan Walsh is in Washington D.C. to get answers on spousal entitlements.

:17 - Andrea Rabinovitz is a second generation Holocaust survivor, and she will be speaking at the Shaw JCC in Akron tonight to tell her mother’s story. Andrea, a Stow native, came by the studio to promote the event a talk more about her mother, who escaped Nazi Germany in 1939, while other family members died in concentration camps.

12:22 - Looking for a fairly inexpensive night out at a concert? Live Nation is offering $20 tickets for select concerts in the area this week only! Meagan Ditton from Live Nation stopped by to talk about some of those shows.

16:20 - It’s showering, which means it should bring May flowering. Our master gardener Jeanne Poremski informed our listeners on proper bulb maintenance.

Dr. Tim Brown from Cleveland Clinic-Akron General touched on it last week, and he updated our listeners today about vaccines and booster shots for those born in the late-1950s and throughout the ‘60s.

7:01 - So will Woodstock 50 go on or not? The panel talked about the 50th anniversary of the music festival, as well as music fests in general.

15:50 - Fast food restaurants have to adapt to the needs of the consumer, and that’s what some are doing with the plant-based “impossible” burgers. Burger King has an Impossible Whopper, and White Castle has the Impossible Slider. Ray and Tony discussed the future of fast food joints.

Ray Horner Podcast - 4/30/2019

:17 - We’re up to over 700 cases of measles across 22 states. Due to “anti-vaxxers,” a disease that was thought to be eradicated by 2000 is back with a vengeance. The morning show panel talked about this outbreak, which continues to make news.

7:45 - Spring has indeed sprung, and so have the orange barrels throughout the Akron area. Justin Chesnic, who manages the public information desk at ODOT, joined the show to discuss the construction happening on I-76 in Norton, U.S. 224, and I-77 near Canton.

13:37 - Kris Drew is a massive Game of Thrones fan, yet Ray and Tony feel like they’re in the minority. Kris attempts to educate everyone on the show, which is in its final couple of episodes.

20:22 - Normally on Tuesdays, Ray has his “Hey Bobby!” segment with Bob DiBiasio from the Cleveland Indians. But Bobby is out of town, so the show improvised and came up with a "Hey Tony!” segment with producer Tony Mazur.

:17 - The great Carol Burnett turns 86 today, and it got everything thinking about classic (and not-so-classic) variety shows from yesteryear.

3:58 - Our movie guy Scott Wynn stopped by to talk about the only film anyone cares about this week: Avengers: Endgame.

5:55 - There is a lot of hoopla that goes into the NFL Draft, but it can be a boon for an economy such as Nashville. Ray and Tony reminisced over draft days in the past, and even promoted the picks happening on Saturday at Lock 3.

12:16 - Our weekend host, Kris Drew, is a massive Ohio State fan, and he and Ray chatted about some of the Buckeyes that have been and will be picked in the NFL Draft.

19:30 - It’s a wet weekend, so golf may not be in the cards for many. Our golf pro Dan Dauk came on to talk about playing in cold and damp climate of Akron.
