Ray Horner Podcast - 11/25/2019

:19 - The Browns have won three games in a row, with a 41-24 victory over the lowly Miami Dolphins. Ray and Tony recapped the win, believing the offense with Mayfield, Beckham, Landry, Chubb, and Hunt looked its best all season.

5:05 - The Wednesday of Thanksgiving week used to be the busiest travel day of the year. While that’s still probably the case, commuters are beginning to leave earlier, sometimes as early as the weekend. Kevin Thomas with Akron AAA shared some travel tips.

13:42 - What if you had a little bit of turkey or stuffing fall on the floor and your pups laps it up? Veterinarian Dr. Riggs talked about table scraps, food for the pets, and questions on owls.

:19 - We begin the podcast with updates coming out of Capital Hill and Atlanta, as Dr. David Beer from Malone University went over Gordon Sondland and the impeachment inquiry, as well as a recap of the Democratic debate.

7:18 - Senator Sherrod Brown joined the program to discuss the updates coming from the Lordstown plant, and he also gave his thoughts on the field of Democrats vying for the presidency.

13:01 - The ratings for the NBA in 2019 have dropped big time. Sure, it’s early and it’s still football season, but is this cause for concern down the road? Is the league too star-driven? Akron Bringing Back "Winterblast at Lock 3"

The City of Akron is getting residents in the holiday spirit with the 16th annual Winterblast at Lock 3. 

The season of outdoor, wintry fun for both adults and kids kicks off Friday, November 29th, Black Friday, and runs through February 17th. 

“Winterblast is a hallmark of the Akron holiday season,” Mayor Dan Horrigan said. “It’s well worth the effort to navigate the downtown construction and stop by Lock 3 for a truly unique and enjoyable experience—whether that’s skating on the ice rink, strolling past the magical, animated window displays, or attending one of the many unique seasonal events. :19 - We’re about a month away from Christmas (if you can believe that), but shipping gifts will have to be sent much early than that. Matt Aloisi is with the UPS Store in Stow, and he shared some shipping tips for those sending and receiving presents before Christmas begins.

7:37 - Are athletes overpaid? And if so, can one say the same about actors and actresses, as well?

15:47 - November is Bladder Health Month, and as we all know, the bladder should not be ignored. Dr. Rena Malek is with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and she informed the listeners of some warning signs about poor bladder health.

18:43 - Tua Tagovailoa is out for the season with a dislocated hip, among other injuries. Dr. Joe Congeni from Akron Children’s Hospital deals with sports medicine, and he talked about the injury to the Alabama quarterback.

Steve Stoliar - Author of Raised Eyebrows

Groucho Marx is considered the leader of the famed Marx Brothers, along with his siblings Chico, Harpo, and sometimes Zeppo. But as his storied career came to a close, Groucho needed some end-of-life care.

Enter Steve Stoliar, author of the book Raised Eyebrows, who chronicled the final three years surrounding Groucho's life. He talked about the events that occurred from 1974 to 1977 inside Groucho's Beverly Hills home with WAKR's Tony Mazur.

:19 - Yesterday on Capital Hill, the impeachment hearings for President Donald Trump began. Dr. David Beer, professor of political science at Malone University, gave an overview of the first day, which featured such players as Bill Taylor, Jim Jordan, among others. He also touched on Deval Patrick entering the race on the Democratic side.

6:51 - What about the legal implications of impeachment? Dean Carro, president of the Akron Bar Association, joined the program to discuss those ramifications and what it means to the political and legal structure.

14:49 - Let’s go back in time to the second-to-last time a president faced impeachment hearings. Dr. Kevin Kern, history professor at the University of Akron, went down memory lane with the Watergate scandal with President Richard Nixon.

17:54 - Today is Veterans Day, and Ray gives a big salute to all those who served and how the reaction towards veterans have improved over time, even if there’s still some things to work on.

:19 - It’s the day after Election Day, and though it was considered an “off-year election,” the polls were certainly open around the Akron area. Ray and Jeanne began Wednesday’s program recapping what happened at the polls.

3:37 - Dan Horrigan will remain mayor of Akron in a blowout race over challenger Josh Sines, and he joined Ray to not necessarily look back at the last four years, but showcase his vision for the next four.

9:44 - Outside the area, we’re a year out from the presidential election. What will the elections in Kentucky, Mississippi, and Virginia mean for 2020? Our political analyst from Malone University, Dr. David Beer, shared his thoughts.

15:18 - Norton will retain their mayor, Mike Zita, for a third term. He joined Ray to talk about what’s on his plate.

18:00 - Issue 14 was a proposal to renew a levy for mental health and addiction services, and that passed. Jerry Craig heads up the Summit County ADM Board, and he thanked the voters for their support of this measure.

21:24 - Green will also keep their mayor, Gerard Neugebauer, in a very tight race. Neugebauer talked about what’s in store for his second term, and how hard-fought his race was, especially off the heels of the Nexus pipeline saga.

:19 - Today kicks off the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive, and if you’re shopping in the greater Akron area, you’ll probably see a red kettle and a bellringer next to it. Major Stephen Stoops from the Salvation Army joined the program to urge any listeners if they have any time to be a volunteer bellringer these next several weeks.

5:15 - The Browns have parted ways with Jermaine Whitehead after he posted several threatening and racially-tinged tweets at fans and an analyst. Head coach Freddie Kitchens didn’t offer much in his Monday press conference, as discussed by Tony and Kris Drew here.

9:00 - From Malone University, political science professor Dr. David Beer touched on the whistleblower case and how the country looks as far as impeachment goes.

Ray Horner Podcast - 11/4/2019

:19 - Losing to Brandon Allen and the Denver Broncos is bad. But the Browns have now gone off the rails, from their receivers wearing the wrong cleats, their quarterback can’t hit the open players, and a defensive player threatens people on social media. Everything is fine though, right? Ray and Tony broke down the game, and did so later on in the podcast, as well.

8:11 - In more positive news, FirstEnergy will remain in downtown Akron through 2035, extending their original lease by a decade. President and CEO of FirstEnergy Chuck Jones joined Ray and assured the listeners of the company’s commitment to Akron.

14:27 - What if you became the CEO of McDonald’s? What would you do differently? I mean, besides having inappropriate relationships with employees.

Ray Horner Podcast - 10/30/2019

:19 - Ten years ago today, Ray had to leave this morning show early as his twins were about to be born. They were severely underweight and at high risk, and they had to remain in the hospital for nearly two months, but they finally came home and are now healthy and active 10 year olds. Ray reminisced over that day, and he thanked the folks at Summa for all of their help in the delivery process.

9:47 - It was bound to happen at some point, as NCAA players may be receiving a stipend for their likenesses being used. Ray, Tony, and Jeanne discussed this subject, which isn’t as cut-and-dry, black-and-white as many may think.

15:39 - Remember the days of actually walking into a store and buying something? Those days may soon be ending, as stores such as Walmart will turn into a form of drive thru service to pick up one’s items.

21:09 - Going trick-or-treating? If you’re in certain states, you are not allowed to dress as a person of the clergy.

While other ballparks may have nicer or more updated facilities (PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Petco Park in San Diego, etc.), the criteria is that Progressive Field offers more in-game entertainment and food options for the new sports fan.

9:08 - The panel got into a discussion on alternative Democrat candidates for president, if the current slate does not appeal to many. Those candidates are Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and US Senator Sherrod Brown. :19 - No Ray today, but no problem, as Tony Mazur and Jim Albright manned the ship this morning. They touched on the settlement that Summit and Cuyahoga County had with four drug companies over the opioid crisis. Four other states are looking to similar settlements, as well.

8:38 - Odell Beckham Jr. is back in the news, and again, it’s not what he’s doing on the field. Well, technically it is, as he was fined over $14,000 for having his pant legs hiked up too high above the knees. Really. The panel, which included Kris Drew, discussed it, and Kris mentioned how he believes Baker Mayfield and OBJ are a bad fit and why Freddie Kitchens isn’t the answer at head coach.

"Sheriff" Clothes, Gun Stolen from Akron Home

Someone broke into a home in Akron's Firestone Park neighborhood around midnight, Monday, and stole a semi-auto rifle, ammo, and clothing with the word "sheriff" printed on them.

Ring surveillance video caught the man in the back of the home rummaging through a van that was unlocked in the driveway.

Below is the full press release from the Summit County Sheriff's Office: 

During the early morning hours of October 14, 2019, a burglary and a subsequent theft occurred in the area of East Ido Street in the City of Akron. Included in the items taken were a semi-automatic rifle, ammunition, and various clothing with the word “SHERIFF” printed on them.

The suspect is believed to be a black male who was wearing reddish shoes and a dark colored jacket with a gray hood. Video footage of the suspect is attached to this email.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Summit County Sheriff’s Office at 330-643-2147 and/or Summit County Crimestoppers at 330-643-8665.

7:22 - 24-year-old Carson King raised over a million dollars via Venmo for cancer patients in Iowa, but he is getting “canceled” over offensive tweets he posted when he was 16. Should he have been blackballed over this, or should we take this in the context of the gentleman’s age.

19:25 - US Senator Sherrod Brown joined the program to share his thoughts on the whistleblower case with the Ukraine, as well as the GM-UAW strike and a women’s conference in Cleveland.

:19 - Tuesday is Voter Registration Day, and Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose joined the program to encourage folks to sign up today. He also talked to Ray about the increased voting booth security ahead of this and next year’s elections.

6:46 - After the passing of TV broadcaster Fred McLeod, the former radio voice of the Cavs, John Michael, will swing over to the television side. That left an opening for the radio gig, which went to WEOL’s Tim Alcorn. He joined Ray to talk about how this is a dream job, how he grew up listening to Joe Tait, and a little on the new look Cavaliers.

13:12 - The states that have legalized recreational marijuana are experiencing massive population growth. With that in mind, will other states follow suit?

16:35 - Bob DiBiasio from the Tribe joined the show to answer both Ray’s and our listeners’ questions. The topics discussed were on favorite sports memorabilia and the differences between old Cleveland Stadium and Progressive Field.

Ray Horner Podcast - 9/23/2019

:19 - The Browns had a great chance to tie or even take the lead late in the game against the Los Angeles Rams….until some suspect play calling ended the contest, 20-13, in favor of LA. Ray and Tony had a field day discussing Freddie Kitchens and his head-scratching play calls, which included a 4th & 9 draw play in the fourth quarter, and four-straight incomplete pass attempts inside the five yard line.

5:45 - It’s a Monday show, and our veterinarian Dr. Gary Riggs stopped by to answer questions on your pets. Some of those questions included organ troubles, including urinary track issues.

14:19 - The Buckeyes easily took care of Miami of Ohio over the weekend, 76-5. Why are these butt-whooping contests being scheduled? Is it all about money? That’s what the panel believes.

20:59 - Would you run with the bulls? How about swimming with sharks? Maybe head north and take on the Iditarod? Ray mentioned a few of these extreme adventures.
