Ray Horner Podcast - 1/24/2019

:17 - James Rollins is a best-selling author, and is out with a new book called The Crucible. Ray talked to James about his book, which deals with artificial intelligence and how human nature can respond to it. He also talked about his inspiration for writing his unique style of novels.

6:05 - ESPN dropped a damning piece about Jimmy Haslam’s tenue as owner of the Cleveland Browns. Ray and Tony broke down the piece, which covers Haslam’s first six years at the helm, and how it all turned around with John Dorsey and Baker Mayfield.

23:12 - Sharon Tate would have been 76 today, but it was 50 years ago that she was brutally murdered. Ray and Tony chatted about the Manson murders and the strange subplots that stemmed from it.

30:40 - Next week begins Catholic Schools Week. Ray had Diocese of Cleveland superintendent Dr. Frank O'Linn called into the show to preview the week ahead.

:17 - Since the weekend’s massive snowfall, the side streets (and even some main streets) in Akron appear to be untouched by snow plows. Mayor Dan Horrigan joined the show to explain what is happening, and has said he wants the streets to be cleared before the temperatures drop again.

6:08 - The University of Notre Dame, the Catholic college in South Bend, Indiana, has decided to cover up some Christopher Columbus murals due to protests from social activists. The morning show panel understands the sensitivity of this measure, but stress not to erase history, which isn’t always kind.

16:28 - The Baseball Hall of Fame announced its newest inductees to Cooperstown: Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay, Mike Mussina, and Edgar Martinez. Ray and Tony agree with Rivera and Halladay, but question Mussina and Martinez, who statistically never dominated their respective eras. What about Al Oliver? Tommy John? Jim Kaat?

24:56 - Have you tried online dating, either using a website or an app like Tinder or Bumble? Some single folks are finding out the online dating may not be all sunshine and roses, and the old fashioned way of meeting on the town or through friends can be more successful.

Ray Horner Podcast - 1/22/2019

:17 - Ray is back from his day off, and he started his shortened week off talking to Dr. John Green, interim president at the University of Akron. Dr. Green recapped his State of the University address from last Friday, which included points about finances and the near and distant future as far as recruiting goes.

13:30 - Tuesday was the day the Oscar nominations were released ahead of next month’s Academy Awards. Our movie guy Scott Wynn has seen all these pictures, and he broke down who his favorites are for these awards.

20:35 - Speaking of actors and awards, Ray and the panel went over some of the most acclaimed actors of our time, as well as those who’ve appeared to be underrated over the years.

32:36 - The end of January starts tax season, and yes, we actually have a tax guy to defer to. Doug Klein drooped by the studio to answer tax questions, including the biggest one now: are we still getting our refund during the government shutdown?

:17 - Later in the podcast here, Senator Sherrod Brown joined the show. How much appeal does Sherrod have nationwide and especially with Millennials? Is America finally ready to elect a female president like Kamala Harris? The future of both the Democrats and Republicans may be quite interesting.

12:24 - As mentioned, Sherrod Brown called into the program. He is visiting some key areas that have been affected by anything from the partial government shutdown to the exodus of the auto industry.

18:30 - Ray and Tony talked at length about Bob Costas, who is now leaving NBC after nearly four decades. Costas, according to the panel, seemed to make even the smallest games big and the biggest games enormous, and they put Bob on the pantheon of classic American broadcasters.

25:08 - Our friends from the Western Reserve Playhouse stopped by to talk about and act out a scene Tartuffe, which is happening this weekend.

Man Shot, Killed in Akron

Akron Police homicide detectives are investigating a deadly shooting Tuesday night near the intersection of Clark and Black Streets.

The call came in around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday about a man shot. When officers and EMS arrived, they found the 37-year-old victim unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the thorax area.

He was transported to Akron City where he died shortly afterwords, around 10:20 p.m. No ID on the victim yet, but the Summit County Medical Examiner says once next-of-kin is notified they will be providing an update.

:17 - The topic of Netflix was brought up on yesterday’s podcast, and since then, it was announced they’re increasing their prices a couple of bucks. Will this help their revenue stream and continue with these critically-acclaimed original series? And what about those who have basic cable? What will that look like in a few short years?

15:35 - Last night at Brush High School, Tony had the pleasure of being a part of the Ball family. LaVar Ball was present in South Euclid-Lyndhurst to watch his son, LaMelo, and the entire SPIRE Academy squad take on Brush. Tony painted the picture of the atmosphere, with bordered on chaotic.

23:54 - Using nicotine to treat memory loss? Not as crazy as you’d think. Dr. Paul Newhouse, spokesperson and director from the Center for Cognitive Medicine at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center joined the show to talk about his studies.

29:32 - The OHSAA sent out a letter to parents for them to knock it off with harassing referees in high school sports, as it has caused a shortage of officials. Will this help at all?

:17 - Ohio has a new governor, though he’s a familiar face, in Mike DeWine. Dr. David Beer, professor of political science at Malone University, called into talk about November’s gubernatorial race, and looks ahead to the next four years in Columbus.

6:04 - Proper nutrition is a must if one wants to shed weight and calories in the new year. Kelly Reed from Cleveland Clinic-Akron General joined the show to touch on all things nutrition, especially on what to eat and certainly what not to eat.

15:05 - Still using your ex’s Netflix account? Is your kid using your Hulu password at college? If so, that’ll cost you a new subscription. Ray and Tony talked about the changing times in cable and streaming views and a little on what the future may look like.

:17 - Each month, Dr. Tim Brown from Cleveland Clinic-Akron General stops by to answer a gaggle of medical questions. This visit, Dr. Brown discusses sleep drugs, from melatonin to harder drugs like Ambien.

8:02 - We stay in the medical world, however, this has to do with animals. Dr. Gary Riggs joined the show in studio, and he talked about various topics, specifically why dogs will roll around on the carpet or on other dead animals, and the importance of scheduling optical and dental appointments.

18:25 - It’s no secret that President Donald Trump has been a controversial figure, but are his accomplishments not being discussed enough, like his relationship with China and trade? And how about the wall? The panel shared their thoughts.

:17 - President Donald Trump addressed the nation in primetime last night on the dangers of illegal immigration along the southern border. Dr. David Beer is a professor of political science at Malone University, and he joined Ray to recap both Trump’s speech and the counter address from Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.

9:16 - So how safe is the border? Tim Dimoff from SACS Consulting came on to discuss national security measures.

15:50 - And what about immigration in general? Farhad Sethna is a local immigration attorney, and he shared his thoughts on Trump’s rhetoric, which he’s been critical about these last two years.

22:00 - Changing things up a little bit, while still touching on security, Akron police chief Ken Ball stopped by the studio today. Among many topics, Chief Ball discussed the crime and overdose numbers in 2018, and what the communities can do in the new year.

40:40 - And finally, Dr. Joe Congeni, a sports medicine doctor at Akron Children’s Hospital, called in to talk some Browns. Not necessarily the X’s and O’s, but what the Browns have to do to ensure the health of rookie Denzel Ward, who suffered two concussions to end his season early.

:17 - We lost a local legend on Thursday at the age of 79. Don Webster worked at WEWS/Channel 5 for 35 years, hosting the famed shows Upbeat, The Morning Exchange, and Academic Challenge, and was a personable weatherman throughout his tenure. Ray and Tony reflected on Don’s life.

6:07 - So long, Edwin Encarnacion, and so long, parrotheads. Encarnacion and Yandy Diaz got packaged in a three-team trade that ended up bringing back longtime catcher and first baseman Carlos Santana. Is this a blockbuster move? The panel doesn’t think so.

11:29 - Scott Wynn stopped by to chat about the movies opening up, and what’s happening in the world of entertainment. Ralph Breaks the Internet still tops the charts, and there’s a new PG-13 Deadpool flick.

:17 - Victoria Lorenzen isn’t much different from a normal high school junior, except one major difference: she’s an airplane pilot. Her parents are both pilots, and Akron Public Schools and Firestone CLC has allowed her fulfill her dreams. She spoke of her passion in the studio with Ray.

9:21 - Everyone have their Christmas tree decorated? The panel talked about their trees, either their current ones or trees from their youth. Lots of tinsel, garland, and even bubble lights!

16:24 - Tim Dimoff is the president and CEO of SACS Security, and he talked about how firms like his would help find missing persons.

Summit M.E. Looking for IDs on Two Crash Victims

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office is still looking for the public's help identifying two of the four victims in Monday morning's deadly crash at Goodyear Boulevard and Kelly Avenue in Akron.

Two of the victims have been ID'ed, according to the report. 29-year-old Colleen Wood from Akron, who was driving the car that hit a wall, and then a pole before bursting into flames.

The front passenger was 29-year-old Alex Jay Lester from Ravenna. Thursday, the M.E.'s office released more of a description of the two victims who were riding in the back seat.

This is an update regarding the traffic fatality that occurred on 12/3/2018 near the intersection of Goodyear Blvd. and Kelly Ave. in Akron.

Two of the deceased occupants have been positively identified. They were Colleen A. Wood, a 29 year-old female from Malasia Road in Akron and Alex Jay Lester, a 29 year old male from Merrill Road in Ravenna.

The two back seat passengers are still unidentified.

Caucasian Male

Approximately 5 feet, 11 inches and weighing approximately 228 pounds

Victim appears to be in his twenties or thirties

Victim has a metal plate in his left jaw.

African American Male

Approximately 5 feet, 5 inches and weighing approximately 106 pounds

Victim has a dental bridge on his upper front teeth

Victim appears to be a small framed and slim African American Male, possibly a adolescent.

Anybody with information concerning the unidentified victims are asked to contact the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office at 330-643-2101

10:49 - We’re a year and a half from the 50th anniversary of the Kent State shootings, and the folks there want to preserve the memory. Dr. Mindy Farmer from Kent State talked about the Ohio History Connection award the school won in commemoration of the event.

15:31 - My, how things have changed in high school athletics. An offseason once meant an off season, but there are no off days in this world. Dr. Joe Congeni from Akron Children’s Hospital discussed the weight training schools are doing throughout the winter to prepare for sports like track, baseball, and even football.

21:07 - Could the Indians part ways with Trevor Bauer? How about Corey Kluber or Carlos Carrasco? While the window is still open, they may need to, as mentioned here by Ray and Tony.

19:05 - Gordon King owns and operates A1 Baseball Glove Repair in Parma, and he has helped refurbish and restring countless old baseball gloves. Gordon also dedicates his time to fixing these gloves for veterans and those in active military duty so they have something to occupy themselves with overseas.

36:28 - The Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates completed a five-player trade on Wednesday, which sent utility player Erik Gonzalez to the Steel City. So how will the Tribe look next year with Gonzalez, Michael Brantley, and possible others playing elsewhere?

45:03 - The Mogadore Wildcats are no strangers to the playoffs, and especially playing a team like Kirkland. Head coach Matt Adorni previewed his matchup against the Hornets.

What people may not know is he was an 18-year veteran, serving in both World War II and Korea. Tony Mazur, who’s filling in for Ray, had the pleasure of interviewing him.

:17 - It’s election day! We covered the most crucial and series topic of our time: is a hot dog a sandwich?

3:46 - We had the Browns covered for you, as well. Our Browns guy, Fred Greetham from the Orange & Brown Report, talked about Gregg Williams’s first game as interim head coach, and how the team looks as they take on the Atlanta Falcons before the bye week.

12:42 - In this sports-heavy show, Ray talked Tribe with broadcaster Jim Rosenhaus. The GM meetings are going on in Major League Baseball, and Rosey discussed the state of the Indians, including the reports of possible trades of core players.

31:52 - The East Dragons are 9-2 on the season, and they’re set to take on Canfield this week. Head coach Marques Hayes talked about his strong football team.

35:14 - We head to Mogodore to talk to head coach Matt Adorni. The Wildcats are 10-1 on the season and they are set to take on McDonald.

:17 - After a whirlwind week, the Cleveland Browns were back on the field and surprised no one with a 37-21 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Ray and Tony broke down how they viewed the contest, which had a slightly better offensive scheme.

7:07 - Our veterinarian Dr. Gary Riggs stopped by, as he typically does on Mondays, to answer questions on your pets. Some of those questions revolved around flea medication, annual shots, and what happens if and when your pet gets into some candy.

20:27 - During our Question of the Day segment, the topic of what are the busiest airports during the holiday season was broached. The panel discussed some of their favorite airports to fly into, and some of the places to avoid if possible.

32:05 - Time now for our Business of the Week! Scheeser Buckley & Mayfield in Green is an engineering firm, and Jim Eckman, the president, talked about the company.

41:54 - Coming up on November 12th at the Funny Stop Comedy Club is the 7th annual Suicide Prevention Benefit. Shawn Boyd started this event back in 2011 following the suicide of a friend, and he’s been raising money and awareness ever since. Shawn is performing that night, as well as our own Tony Mazur.

:17 - Remember, if you aren’t fully digital at home, this is the weekend we “fall back” with the time change. The panel opened Friday’s show talking about sleep, or lack thereof, and how they’re able to cope with their schedules.

10:52 - Akron Children’s Hospital has had Bill Considine in charge for 40 years, but that all changed this week. Grace Wakulchik is the new president and CEO at the hospital, and she talked to Ray about being prepared for the transition.

15:25 - Tammy Pescatelli got her start in standup at Hilarities Comedy Club in Cuyahoga Falls. Well, Hilarities has now become the Funny Stop, but she hasn’t forgotten her roots. She’s performing there this weekend, and being a Northeast Ohioan, she shared her thoughts on the Cleveland Browns.

22:20 - The world of comic books makes its way to Goodyear Hall this weekend. Michael Savene from the Akron Comicon joined Ray to give comic book enthusiasts some great access to the creators and exhibits.

:17 - Bill Considine has been the head of Akron Children’s Hospital for 40 years, and though he’ll keep an emeritus title, he is stepping down. He talked to Ray about his time as CEO and the legacy he’ll leave behind, keeping it in good hands for Grace Wakulchik (who’ll join us tomorrow).

12:02 - A week before the election, the topic of birthright citizenship has been a divisive one, especially with the caravan headed towards the US border. Immigration attorney Farhad Sethna calls in to talk about the executive branch’s role here and how the laws could or could not be changed.

23:07 - Remember to “fall back” this weekend, as we turn our clocks back and get an extra hour of sleep. For many, the time change doesn’t affect us, but others have a real problem adjusting. Dr. Rajesh Tampi from Akron General talks about seasonal depression and how to properly cope.

:17 - We’re now a week away from the midterm elections, which, in Ohio, include the governor race. Current attorney general Mike DeWine called into the show to discuss his campaign and his platforms leading up to election day.

11:27 - Not long after we got off the air yesterday, the Cleveland Browns said goodbye to head coach Hue Jackson and, eventually, OC Todd Haley. DC Gregg Williams is the interim head coach with the understanding that the Browns will be on the search for a head coach soon.

17:45 - It started as an interim position, but it was made permanent on Monday, as Dr. Cliff Deveny is now the president and CEO of Summa Health Systems. The Akron native talked to Ray about his tenure so far and what he foresees down the road.

Summa Names Dr. Cliff Deveny President, CEO

(Summe Health) – The Summa Health Board of Directors today announced that Cliff Deveny, MD, has been named president and CEO. Dr. Deveny rejoined Summa in March of 2017 as interim president and CEO.

Since returning to Summa, Dr. Deveny has been instrumental in guiding the turnaround of the health system, both culturally and financially. Through August of 2018, the organization experienced an operating margin of $17.5 million. This reflects a turnaround of more than $50M in operating income improvement, when compared to the same time period in 2017.

Gas Prices Falling in Akron

Gas prices in Akron are down nearly 12 cents over the past week, averaging out at $2.60 per gallon of regular unleaded, as of Sunday night. That's 9 cents less than the Cleveland area, and 8 cents below the statewide average.

Patrick DeHaan with GasBuddy.com says that the Great Lakes states are reaping the most benefits of the recent drop in oil prices as the area has seen the largest drop in the price at the pump.

Gasoline prices in Akron have fallen 11.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.60/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 372 stations in Akron. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.6 cents per gallon versus last week to $2.88/g, according to GasBuddy.

Average gasoline prices on October 15 in Akron have ranged widely over the last five years:
$2.32/g in 2017, $2.15/g in 2016, $2.37/g in 2015, $3.10/g in 2014 and $3.34/g in 2013.

Including the change locally during the past week, prices yesterday were 28.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago and are 14.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has increased 2.6 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 42.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Areas near Akron and their current gas price climate:
Cleveland- $2.69/g, down 12.0 cents per gallon from last week's $2.81/g.
Pittsburgh- $3.13/g, down 1 cent per gallon from last week's $3.14/g.
Ohio- $2.68/g, down 11.0 cents per gallon from last week's $2.79/g.

"The last week has seen a flurry of events to keep an eye on, while the recent drop in oil prices materialized at pumps across the country, but no where have the declines been as large as Great Lakes states," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Great Lakes states have wreaked havoc on the national average, sending it down considerably as stations there have passed along the recent drop in oil prices relatively quickly. However, while Great Lakes motorists were seeing lower prices, average prices along the West Coast, mainly in Washington and Oregon, have started to jump after a natural gas pipeline explosion last week pushed some refineries to close. In addition, events in Saudi Arabia bear monitoring as the West claims the Kingdom is behind the disappearance of a Washington Post journalist and could rile tensions between the world's largest oil consumer and one of the world's largest oil producers. I believe gas prices in most areas East of the Rockies will drift lower, but keep an eye out on these new developments. I don't know that I've ever seen autumn so rife with possible volatility at the pump as we're seeing now."

B&W Moving Headquarters, Offices to Akron

Babcock and Wilcox Enterprises announced on Monday that they will be moving their headquarters from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Akron, into the former Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company's East End Offices.

There's been no date set for the move, but the Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that it's expected to be finished no later than next summer.

Employees were notified Monday, while the financial details of the move are expected to be released along with the public company filings. In addition to the move, hundreds of employees are relocating from the Barberton and Copley offices to Akron.

Mayor Bill Judge joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to talk about the impact the move will have on his city.

eBay Further Investing in Akron

Back in January Mayor Horrigan, along with other local officials and representatives from eBay, announced that Akron was part of the online retailers "Retail Revival" initiative, offering website maintanence and other services through the ebay.com platform for local entrepreneurs.

Fast forward 8 months later and eBay's back in town, announcing Thursday the eBay@Home initiative, which brings with it 40 new full-time, work-from-home, customer service positions to Akron, part of a global launch to add to the online marketer's workforce. Akron, along with Salt Lake City, Utah, and Austin, Texas, are the only three U.S. cities taking part.

So far, eBay has filled half of the positions, after receiving more than 1,300 applications, according to a press release from Paul Gazeley (pictured), the head of eBay's North American customer service operations.

"We need a talented market, outside of Silicon Valley and other tech hubs that we have, that offers the most opportunity to our customers; and we wanted to continue to revitalize local economies," Gazeley said. "Taking all of this into account, we chose Akron."

Bond Set at $2M in Ex-Girlfriend Slaying

Bond has been set for David Callaghan who is charged in the murder of his ex-girlfriend whose body was found in a shallow grave in his Crouse Street home over the weekend.

During an initial appearance, that lasted just a couple of minutes in Akron Municipal Court via a live video feed from the Summit County Jail, Judge Annalisa Williams put the bond at $2 Million.

Robin Freitag had been missing since July. Police say she was killed August 6th, and that's when Callaghan buried her body. Local authorities dug up her remains Friday in the back yard of the home at 606 Crouse Street.

Judge Williams announced that she would appoint an attorney for Callaghan.

"I Promise School" Getting New Media Lab, Partners

The LeBron James Family Foundation, in partnership with WKYC-TV Cleveland and Kaulig Companies Limited out of Hudson, is developing a new high-tech media lab, with live TV broadcasting capabilities.

WKYC.com is reporting, that the I Promise School, which is set to open its doors to 3rd and 4th grade students next week and is primarily hands-on and STEM oriented, will teach video editing, TV production, and more in the new lab.

W. Bowery Closing Tuesday through July 29th

(Akron Police Department) At 9 am on July 10th, W. Bowery Street will be closed to all through traffic, between W. Center Street and Water Street, as Cavanaugh Building Company, EDG and Akron Children’s Hospital begin work on a storm sewer connection.

Eastbound traffic from W. Center St. and W. Bowery St. will be detoured using W. Bowery St., W. State St. and S. Main St. Westbound traffic will be detoured using S. High St. and W. State St.

This work is expected to be complete by Friday, July 27th.

Drivers are urged to use caution as other construction projects are currently underway in the immediate area.

Akron Man Dies After Tree Branch Falls on Car

An Akron man died early Friday morning after a tree branch fell onto his car while he was driving along Front Street near 2nd in Cuyahoga Falls.

According to the Summit County Medical Examiner Gary Gunther's press release, 60-year-old Robert Musch was driving near the Gorge Metro Parks at around 5:50 Friday morning when a large branch from a tree snapped off and came crashing down on his vehicle. The 911 was placed at 5:52 a.m. and Cuyahoga Falls Police, Fire and EMS responded to the scene.

Mr. Musch was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Akron City Hospital where he was pronounced dead, just about a half hour later at 6:23 a.m.
