University of Akron officials are calling a frightening, and potentially more severe, incident that led to the brief lockdown of the campus more than a week ago a "teaching moment," that all students can learn from.

In the early morning hours of November 10th, a gun went off in a dorm in the Exchange Street Residence Hall. Two teens from Bedford, who were let in by two University of Akron students, were involved in the incident; one of them, a 17-year-old had the gun that accidentally went off and shot the second man, a 19-year-old.

Now, the two students who let those two non-UA students into the dorms, are barred from UA dorms and are charged with obstructing justice.

Reports are those students lied about letting the others in, but security cameras caught them doing just that.

The Akron Zoo has welcomed two new red wolves, Waya and Mohe. The male wolves arrived from Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo in Greenbay, Wisconsin and are now out in the zoo’s red wolf habitat daily.

Waya, which means “wolf” in Cherokee, and Mohe, meaning “elk” in Cherokee, are four years old. The brothers were born on May 22, 2014 at the Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo.

Red wolves are one of the world’s most endangered canids, with only 60 wolves estimated to be left in the wild. Native to the eastern U.S., red wolves can now only be found in one protected area in North Carolina. Red wolf numbers have rapidly declined in past years due to predator control programs, as the red wolf is often mistaken for a coyote.

The Akron Zoo partners with the Red Wolf Coalition – an organization that focuses on raising awareness and protecting red wolves in the wild – and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s efforts to protect the species through the Red Wolf Recovery program. On Nov. 5, a federal judge ruled that red wolves in the wild will continue to reside in their protected reserve in North Carolina, a huge victory in the protection of the species.

The Akron Zoo also participates in the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP), a scientifically-based breeding program to ensure a healthy, genetically-diverse population of red wolves in zoos. The Akron Zoo participates in 45 SSP programs as an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited facility.

With Waya and Mohe’s arrival, the zoo’s current male red wolf, Itabi, who arrived at the Akron Zoo in 2016, has moved to Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo with a breeding recommendation from the Red Wolf SSP. The Akron Zoo is open 361 days a year. Winter hours are 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and admission is $7 per person. Children under two are free and parking is $3. Akron Police detectives are looking for missing 18-year-old Samantha Guthrie, whose mother first reported her missing back on November 5th. News 5 though reports that Guthrie's mother said she turned 18 back in May and left her home. 

According to reports, Guthrie was last seen leaving a home in the 300 block of Lillian Street, and believe that her disappearance is "suspicious." 

Guthrie (pictured) has a tattoo of an owl on her right forearm and a tattoo that reads "Believe" surrounded by a design on her left forearm. 

Anyone with more information on Guthrie's disappearance or whereabouts is asked to the Akron Police.

Rittman Police, along with other local authorities, are looking for missing 15-year-old Mikayla Van Kirk. 

According to Police, Mikayla was first reported missing Sunday, November 11th after she left her home. Before she left, Police say she left behind a suicide note, and that she may be with her adult boyfriend. 

She does not have her cellphone with her and Police believe she may be in danger.

A Missing Adult Alert has been issued by the Elyria Police Department statewide.

Be on the lookout for a missing adult. On November 13, 2018 at 10:00 AM, Mr. Mathis drove away from his residence and has failed to return.

The incident took place in Lorain County, OH on Morgan Avenue in the city of Elyria 44035.

The adult's name is Peter Mathis and the individual is missing. The adult is a Black male, age 61, is 5'6" tall, weighs 309 lbs, and has brown hair and brown eyes. Mr. Mathis suffers from Dementia and other medical issues. He was last seen wearing light grey sweatpants and a black jacket. 

The vehicle involved is a black 2016 Ford Focus with OH plate number 719XSG. The vehicle pictured is not the actual vehicle involved.

Akron Fire is celebrating 40 years of providing Emergency Services to the community with an anniversary celebration Tuesday.

Since the program was first initiated in 1978, the EMS squadron has grown to 14 ambulances that cover the Akron area, responding to a little more than 100 calls per day on average. 

Members of Akron's first EMS squads will be in attendance at Tuesday's event at the Akron Firefighters Credit Union.

In a press release, Akron Fire Chief Clarence Tucker and District Chief of EMS, Joe Natko say they are “proud that our paramedics continue to serve our community with excellence and a high standard of care. This has provided a powerful legacy for those who paved the way many years ago.”

The University of Akron was locked down briefly after a gun accidentally went off in a dorm at the Exchange Street Residence Hall early Saturday morning.

According to UA Police, the call of a gunshot that was heard coming from a campus dorm was made about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. When police arrived, they found that a 19-year-old from Bedford was shot in the stomach after a gun that a 17-year-old was carrying and reportedly went off accidentally.

The victim, identified as Tommy Micah Lavette was transported to Akron General, there's been no update on his injuries. The 17-year-old suspect, whose name hasn't been released, was arrested, charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, and taken to Summit County Juvenile Center.

The lockdown was lifted around 2:15 Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident is reportedly still ongoing.

The University of Akron Police Department’s preliminary investigation of an incident that occurred early this morning shows that two non-University of Akron individuals were let into the Exchange Street Resident Hall late Friday evening or early Saturday morning by as-yet unidentified person(s). During a visit to a room of an acquaintance in the residence hall, there was what appears to have been an accidental discharge of a handgun, resulting in a wound to the abdomen of the victim, 19-year old Tommy Micah Lavette of Bedford, Ohio. He was transported to Akron General Cleveland Clinic Hospital where he is being treated for his injury. No one else was injured. The suspect, a 17-year old male, also of Bedford, was taken into custody and transported to the Summit County Juvenile Center. He has been charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm. Both the police investigation and the University’s review of the incident are ongoing.

UA prohibits firearms in residence halls and requires resident students to have responsibility for the actions of any guests. This incident underscores the importance of this policy.

We understand that this situation was very concerning for many people and University representatives from the Division of Student Affairs and Residence Life and Housing have been on scene and providing support to other UA students. They also will be discussing campus safety and additional ways to improve our efforts with students in the days ahead.

We appreciate the cooperation of all parties as University officials and the University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) continue the investigation. As a community, we also encourage students to remain diligent advocates for safety.  If you have information that can assist investigators, please notify UAPD at 330-972-2911.

Stark County Sheriff's Deputies, along with Canton Police are looking for a missing Canton teen.

There isn't much information right now, and we're not sure where 16-year-old Christa Hicks was last seen, but a missing child poster was issued this morning.

She is said to frequent the Alliance area.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Canton Police Department. 

The FBI has arrested 46-year-old Luther Nash of Wooster for allegedly using Facebook to lure a 13-year-old boy for sex.

Turns out, that boy was a Wooster Police detective who had created a fake online profile and sent Nash a friend request back in September. Since then, Nash had sent inappropriate photos and even arranged to meet the fictitious teen.  

Now the FBI is asking the public for more information, specifically whether or not anyone else has had contact with Nash online.

Canton Resident Agency, the Wooster Police Department, Canton Police Department and United States Attorney’s Office – Northern District of Ohio, announce the arrest of Luther Nash, 46 years old, of Wooster, Ohio.

On September 24, 2018, Wooster Police Department was notified from an anonymous source that he/she had created a fake Facebook Profile identifying as a 13 year old boy. According to the complaint, Nash sent nude images of himself to what he believed to be a 13 year old boy.

On September 28, 2018, an undercover Facebook account using a persona of a 13 year old boy was created by law enforcement. A friend request was sent to Luther Nash. Within two hours Nash accepted the friend request and asked if the 13 year old had a boyfriend. The initial online conversation with the persona of the 13 year old boy resulted in Nash providing a nude photo of himself and asking, “Can I be your daddy”.

According to the complaint, Nash discussed meeting the “13 year old” at a park to engage in sexual activity. The online interaction included the 13 year old boy persona stating, “I wish I was older than 13 years old…”, Nash responded, “Stay a kid and my Babyboy”.

On October 5, 2018, Nash was contacted and placed into custody at his employment by Wooster Police Detectives. Nash admitted to sending nude photos to someone he believed to be 13 years old.

Nash was transferred from local custody to federal custody on Thursday, November 8, 2018 without incident. Nash remains in federal custody and will appear in US Magistrate Judge Kathleen Burke’s court room for a detention hearing on Friday, November 16, 2018.

Law enforcement is asking the public if anyone had interaction with Luther Nash online to please contact the FBI at 330-456-6200. It is believed that Nash may have had other interaction attempting to persuade, induce and/or entice young boys online.
