Frank Caliendo called into the Ray Horner Morning Show to promote his comedy show at the Hard Rock Rocksino. But Caliendo was not alone, as Charles Barkley, John Madden, Jon Gruden, and President Donald Trump also paid a visit.

Caliendo talked to Ray about the process of how long it takes to perfect a voice, as well as finding the right celebrity to imitate.

AUDIO: OEA President On Job Shadowing For Teachers

A small part of Governor John Kasich’s proposed budget is for teachers to shadow inside the job sector. Not surprisingly, this was met with a bit of controversy, especially since it appeared to be buried deep in the budget.

Becky Higgins, a former teacher at Copley-Fairlawn and now the president of the Ohio Education Association, joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to share her thoughts. The shadowing in the job sector would be a requirement to renew teachers’ licenses, and Higgins echoed the inquisitive thoughts of her fellow educators.

The OEA president also touched on trade schools and the future of cursive.

AUDIO: John Michael Previews Cavs Second Half

The Cleveland Cavaliers are at the halfway point in the season. Technically, they are more than halfway, but now that the all-star break is over, the team is focused on getting healthy for the playoffs.

John Michael, the play-by-play voice of the Cavaliers, joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to talk about the bumps in the road and the silver linings. Those bumps have come from injuries, first to JR Smith and now to Kevin Love. As far as Smith, Michael believes he is still a ways away from returning to the lineup.

The silver linings, according to Michael, are the additions of Kyle Korver and Derrick Williams, who have stabilized the rotation. Still, the Cavs may make some type of signing, with a veteran backup point guard being a top need.

Longtime head football coach for the Garfield Golden Rams Bob Sax stepped down as the head coach after 15 seasons at the helm.

Both Kenmore High School and Garfield High School will merge next fall (Fall of 2017) and they will be looking for a new leader.

Akron Public Schools Athletic Director Joe Vassalotti spoke with Sam and Brad on Monday to talk about that process.

 

He plans on teaching mathematics at Kenmore/Garfield next year.

1590 WAKR Student Athlete of the Week: Tree Paw

This week, our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Tree Paw, a junior bowler from North High School.

Tree says she came into bowling somewhat by accident, but has grown in her appreciation for the sport and her teammates.

“One day they just announced it (bowling tryouts), so I went to the lunchroom to sign up,” she said.

Paw also knows the importance of teamwork and working with her coaches to help keep things on track.

“They help me out when I'm struggling, and they keep me balanced,” she explained.

Tree is a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, bowling, and tennis. She's no stranger to academic success as well, maintaining a 3.7 GPA and being ranked #4 in her class.

In addition to those accolades, she's also involved in C.A.T.S. (Concerned About Teen Success) and Upward Bound Classic, which helps students with postsecondary education.

Paw grew up in Thailand before moving to Akron, and plans on studying pre-nursing at Kent State University upon graduation.

We here at 1590 WAKR wish Tree success in her future endeavors.

This week's 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Jakari Desphy from Walsh Jesuit High School.

Jakari is a junior goalie on the Warriors hockey team, and is having a terrific season so far as they get ready for state tournament play.

Since age two, Jakari has loved the sport of hockey. Around that time, he first donned a pair of skates, and has been a long-time fan of the New Jersey Devils. Being a goalie, his favorite player was Martin Brodeur.

Jakari really enjoys attending Walsh Jesuit due to the tight knit student body and faculty. He hopes to attend college at either Vanderbilt or Boston University, a hockey powerhouse.

On Wednesday, the superintendent of Akron Public Schools addressed the state of the district over the last year and what is to come for the rest of 2017.

David James joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to recap what was brought up at Quaker Station. Among the topics were the health academy, the financial state of the district, and the update on the Kenmore-Garfield project.

A point of discussion was the research into students who may not necessarily be college material. James has been looking to help keep these students interested in the trades engaged and career oriented.

As we here at 1590 WAKR continue to celebrate Black History Month, we caught up with one of our community's most influential athletes, Akron native Butch Reynolds, who is doing some fantastic things in the community, both in Akron and Columbus.

He talked with Sam and Brad Wednesday about the importance of giving back to the community and how it all starts with our youths.

A graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School here in town,  Reynolds is currently a coach of track and field at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, and is involved in various community initiatives, including the Butch Reynolds Care For Kids Foundation.

He represented the United States in track and field in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he picked up a gold medal in the 4x400 relay and a silver in the 400 meters.

Highland High School junior basketball player Collin Rittman is the WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week for February 10th-17th.

Collin had a three-game stretch recently where he averaged over 32 points per game in keying a great run by the Hornets. "Yeah, I was making the shots, but my teammates were feeding me the ball, and I just got lucky I guess," said Rittman.

The Hornets have 11 wins this season and are lead by Rittman, who is averaging over 23.0 PPG. Collin plays both guard and forward in the Highland offense. He is a two-year starter and an All-Suburban League Honorable Mention selection a year ago.

He was also an All-Inland District selection and All-Medina pick as a sophomore at Highland.

Rittman is active in the school as he is a member of Student Council and carries a 3.4 GPA.

"School comes first, but the sports work to help make you a better player," said Rittman.

Collin wants to continue his basketball career in college once he graduates from high school and plans on a career in Business.

Our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Landry Carneal of Lake High School.

Landry is a three-sport athlete for the Blue Streaks, where she competes in soccer, swimming, and track. During the winter, she is a star swimmer, where she holds school records for the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle relay.

Recently, Landry has committed to attend Malone University in the fall, where she will continue her education and study nursing. In athletics, she will don the cleats and play for the women’s soccer team.

Why Malone? Landry says it is “close to home and is a faith-based community."

We here at WAKR wish Landry the best of luck and congratulate her on being this week's WAKR Student Athlete of the week.

President Trump is actively filling out his cabinet, though he is encountering a few roadblocks from the political opposition.

Congressman Jim Renacci joined the Ray Horner Morning Show for his monthly visit, and he spoke about the “unique and different” cabinet the president is putting together. He wishes the Democrats could give the president a chance to succeed by getting the members on board as soon as possible, rather than delaying matters.

Rep. Renacci also touched on education, specifically about student loan debt and Betsy DeVos, the newly-confirmed Education Secretary. The Ohio congressman also spoke about the Congressional Review Act, which is an act that congressional leaders put forth to overturn certain bills pushed by an outgoing president at the end of his term.
